update - discount extended

Hey guys,

Thanks to the support of ozbargain, Amazon actually pushed our deal for another day - but only 8 hours starting at 2pm.
Overnight we released a new software upgrade for all new and existing nuraphones with features that includes Active Noise Cancellation and Bluetooth QuickSwitch. There are more features but I thought I'd highlight these as they were the most requested by our customers.

Overnight we had some publications review the update:

"[nuraphones] have essentially ruined other headphones for me.” - Business Insider
“The best headphones we've ever heard” - New Atlas
“It's hard to explain just how much better music sounds through these headphones.” - Forbes
“Brilliantly clever headphones now come with active noise cancellation (and 25% off on Prime Day)” - Expert Reviews
"I like the Nuraphones a lot. In fact, I named the sound-adapting headphones one of my favorite things of 2017” - TechCrunch
"They feel really comprehensive, with excellent build quality, great sound, wireless and a host of other nice-to-haves” - Engadget
"The Nuraphones are already a fantastic pair of headphones but they've just got even better” - Alphr

Again - we are a small team from Brunswick, Melbourne and this prime period is very exciting for us :)

<——————Yesterdays post below—————————>
Hey guys, I'm surprised this wasn't posted yet. But the nuraphones are currently 25% of for Amazon Prime members.
I'm associated with nura and this is the biggest public discount we've had in a long time, and probably for some time too.

This ends tonight at 9pm as part of the Amazon Prime day Lightning Deals.

A quick bio - we're a headphone startup in Brunswick Melbourne. The headphones automatically tune to your unique hearing by listening to your otoacoustic emissions. Help support an aussie start up! We've been featured in some pretty big publications lately such as WSJ and Wired so you can read the reviews there.

We have more info on our website if needed.

I read the title and thought since when did neurofen make headphones???

  • +3

I havd one of these and can say the sound quality is great, and in my opinion, a lpt better than the bose qc35.

They have a software update tomorrow, with rumoured active noise cancelling, so feature list may be more extensive tomorrow

    • Thanks for the review! And yes, tomorrow is big for nura :)

      • +1

Will they have noise cancelling via software update?

    • +2

Noise cancelling headphones such as the QC35 sound good but not as good as other headphones in their price range, as the main feature is ANC, so since these ones aren't ANC it's to be expected that the sound quality be a lot better for the same price.

If the ANC is on a level that can compete with the QC35 though that'll change everything.

    • What is this software update? Really tempted but may not be able to once i know what is in the software update.

  • +2

If anyone is interested in a review:

    https://youtu.be/3uxgml0qYr8

Also if you're an audiophile or just casually interested in audio equipment and haven't heard of Zeos before, enjoy the review lol

    • Thanks - this guy seems to be the most switched on when it comes to our tech and we often recommend this one:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvjBb2VYD4Y
This wasn't endorsed or paid for either. Just a customer who saw our facebook ads

      • -1

        This wasn't endorsed

You just recommended and endorsed it.

        • +8

Oops, bad choice of words. I'm juggling too many windows. I meant didn't pay for the review, like some of the comments in that video suggest.

  • I've read online that these have some sort of anti-theft system that locks the firmware… is this at all true?

    • +4

We have had to use that in situations where some were paid for with fraudulent credit cards. So they were disabled. For the customers who bought those fraud orders through eBay (credit card fraudster offloaded them there) were offered brand new units once they filed a dispute order with paypal.

      • And what about the customers that didn't pay with PayPal?

      • +2

So you have the ultimate authority to ban people from using your headphones?

        • +1

Doubt they be randomly willy nilly brick someones headphones for the lulz.

        • I had the same concern when I saw jasswolf's comment, but I can't think of any normal situations where that would negatively affect consumers.

  • Whoa. So very tempted - I think every online reviewer has given these pretty rave reviews which is rare in an area that's mature like personal audio.

  • +5

Well, they're out of my range but I'm glad to see an Australian business getting picked up by a global giant like Amazon, good job guys.

EDIT: Disappointed to learn they have a proprietary charging cable.

    • +2

I agree with both aspects of this. Great Aussie innovation but why proprietary cables? I'm too concerned I'll be stuck on my travels somewhere without any way to charge them.

  • +1

don't need another set of headphones …

    don't need another headphone ..

    …. do need another headphone

    • And bought.

I'm half spewing cause I just bought a Bose soundwear… But I receive my tax returns on Wednesday so just went **** it.

  • +5

By boss has a pair. The duel in the ear and over the ear setup takes a little while to get used to. As for the sound, the bass is out of this world because of the duel over ear and in ear which allows for the isolation of mid etc from the bass. They sound reasonable but they did not blow my mind. The whole mapping to your ears seems like gamic. Its effectively just an automated equaliser. I was also not a fan of the proprietary plug. Please replace it with USB-C in gen 2.

Honestly, though, for a first generation Kickstarter product out of Australia they are really nice pair headphones. Well made, decent sounding. If you bought a pair you would not second guess your choice.

    • Of course it's an automated equaliser in its final effect, but what's innovative about it is how it generates that profile.

      • But to a consumer what matters is the end result.

        • Which for people who don't know how to professionally tune a pair of headphones is…

        • -2

          @jasswolf: An automated equaliser.

Even if someone doesn't know how to professionally tune a pair of headphones, they can mess around with the settings until they get something they like and different equalisers for different genres and it doesn't cost anything, otherwise a small portable entry level amp like the Fiio A1 will work with most headphones.

The product seems good, and if you don't like equalisers or amps then it might be a worthwhile investment.

        • @BradleyDS2: the dual driver design is a selling point as well.

I don't think there's many audiophiles out there who would outright declare themselves to be superior to a collection of testing data to determine equalisation profiles via analysis of the ear canal, middle and inner ear, but here we are apparently.

I'll give you that you can't make heaps of different personal profiles easily, but for $350 after cashback compared to some Bose QC 35 IIs @ $320, this is great value. One commenter suggested that they're about get active noise cancellation (presumably via the built in mic), so the value proposition is huge for a bluetooth headset.

If you have another product to suggest, go for it!

        • +4

@jasswolf: I'm not denying that it's a good product, in fact, I stated in my last comment "the product seems good" and in one of my other comments on this thread I stated that if they can do high level ANC it'll significantly increase the value of the product even further.

I never declared that I'm superior to a collection of test data to determine equalisation profiles via analysis of the ear canal, middle and inner ear, you're putting words in my mouth.
What I said is that anyone can tune their headphones with an equaliser to suit them, even if they don't have extensive knowledge on tuning equalisers.

In the end, we're talking about sound, and sound is highly subjective. Very rarely is there one product that's 'better' than another, some people might like amps, some people might like equalisers, some people might like these headphones and others might like all three together. I'm not trying to argue that any are better than the other, I was stating that the end result is similar to using a tuned equaliser, as you commented in both bold and italics stressing that how it generates the profile is innovative. I don't deny that at all, I was pointing out that the majority of consumers don't care how things work, but only care about the end result. In this case, what gives a better end result is entirely subjective and hardly worth discussing due to how much personal preference affects what's 'better'.

        • -2

@BradleyDS2: it is a subjective thing in modern terms, but subjectivity is only separated from pure objectivity through the opaque means that which we can observe an individual's perception of sound.

This is a tool that helps cut through some of that and comes into the overall tool kit for audio tuning. Positioning it as anything else is short-sighted.

        • +1

          @jasswolf:
After reading his arguments, I agree with BradleyDS2, that what matters is the end result for most consumers.

There are many consumers (including a number of people that I know) who couldn't care less about tuning or equalising, let alone innovations in the process. Basically for them, if something sounds full and isn't too muffled or harsh, then it sounds good enough. A friend of mine bought a Sonos playbase, and he doesn't care enough about tuning to do the auto calibration. He just says that it sounds fine and that he won't notice the difference anyway.

leftspeaker2000 seems similar to my friend, primarily caring about the more noticeable aspects of the sound. Differences made by tuning are just too minor for a lot of people.

For the effects of equalising to appeal to consumers, it would probably need to be more extreme and unbalanced, adapting to each song's instruments and mixing to pump up the good sounding frequencies and bring out more detail. (Is adaptive EQ a thing? Let's just call this adaptive EQ..)

The ear scanning IS "…effectively (which I believe leftspeaker2000 was using in the sense of meaning "in effect") just an automated equaliser." The way it does it is interesting, and it's super handy for people that don't have the ability to equalise really well, but that doesn't matter much to consumers whose capability for analytical listening isn't developed enough to be able to enjoy any appreciable difference.

Making headphones that tune themselves assumes that enough people are able to appreciate the difference made by equalisation. And I really hope that's the case, because I want nuraphone to do well enough for auto tuning to eventually become a normal feature in smart earphones and headphones.

But, realistically I think it would take something more on the level of an adaptive EQ for consumers to notice appreciable benefits from automatic equalising.

        • @mrdavedave: your anecdotal experience comes across as a couple of people passing off recalcitrance as a carefree attitude.

Most people would be able to hear the difference, they're just not game to try. Lower the barrier to entry to the point of pushing a button, and I'm sure they'll give it a go.

        • +1

          @jasswolf:
At least in the case of my friend with the Sonos Playbase (who I argued with a lot, feeling like he was just being stubborn and closed minded, and getting annoyed with him not using a feature that he paid for), he made some strong arguments for his position.

I'm definitely paraphrasing, but it's a bit like a person who doesn't have a developed sense of [gustatory] taste eating at a fancy restaurant. They might not be able to appreciate the finer details in the food, but that doesn't stop them from enjoying the food. In this scenario, the Sonos Playbase's tuning feature and my insistence that he should use it since he paid for it is analogous to a waiter that keeps approaching the person dining at the fancy restaurant, offering expensive complimetary garnishes to go with the dishes. It wouldn't be abnormal for said person to feel that if the food tastes good enough as is, and that the impact of the garnishes are likely to be wasted on their underdeveloped sense of taste, that they're happy to just…eat.

Regardless of whether that is a convincing analogy or not, I much prefer someone being honest with themselves over someone pretending that they appreciate things that may as well be placebo.

For example, if the same friend with the Sonos Playbase used the tuning feature and raved about the difference it made, and continued to do so even after I sneakily disabled the tuning (hypothetically. Not something I'd actually do), I think that would annoy me more than that friend trying to tell me that, from experience, such minor changes to the sound would be wasted on them.

And that ties in with the other point you made. I agree that most people can hear a difference between tuned/untuned sound, especially if we're talking about side by side A/B listening. What I've been saying is that for most people, tuning doesn't make an appreciable difference.

I reckon that if I set up an A/B listening situation, where I lied to people and told them that A was untuned and B was tuned (despite actually being the opposite) I feel like most people that I know would either have no preference between the two, or would say that the "tuned" sound was better, simply because tuned sound is meant to be better.

But yes, as always, anecdotal. And if you happen to know a lot of people that have a more developed ability for analytical listening, you aren't likely to be swayed by any of what I just said :)

      • +1

OAE otoacoustic emissions is old tech but used to tune headphones is innovative. However, there is also ear canal acoustics to be considered too.
As your hearing might change over time, don't know how easy is the tuning process.

        • Supposedly 30 seconds.

please add the 7% cashrewards cashback in title, making this the lowest price for Nuraphones so far I believe

    Amazon reviews here:

    https://www.amazon.com/nuraphone-Bluetooth-Headphones-Microp…

Quite mixed - I often check the 3 * reviews as they are not too biased either way…

    • 30 day return policy should cover any buyers regret i'd think

  • +1

Can't software do most of what this does? I think I read Samsung s9 has a similar "hearing test" mode

    • That's a self-administered test. This uses sound tech to do all of that for you, presumably with greater fidelity.

  • 2 people I know at work have these and love them, but ugh I just bought 2 pairs of headphones so must resist…

  • +2

    Original Kickstarter backer here.

    v2 needs:
    - non-proprietary charging cable - this alone makes it so inconvenient for me currently, the headset rarely leaves its case.
    - at least a volume control on the sets and possibly non-touch controls or move them so they are less prone to accidental touch.

Then I'll be back, otherwise, it'll be one more set in my headphone pile.

Good luck and I'm proud of you.

    Cheers.

    • +1

Second this. I am big fun of these guys but refuse to buy it until they get rid of proprietary charging cable

    • +1

How often do they need charging?

      • +1

Battery life is pretty good… If you are using it throughout the day for your commute and at the office i would say it could last you 4-5days on a single charge

  • Does anyone know if I could order these, try them on and return it for a refund due to change of mine if the headphones don't satisfy me?

    • Yes, I asked them yesterday, they have a 30 day satisfaction guarantee which is still applicable if bought through Amazon.

  • Personally think its great that an Aussie company, even better a start up is out there in this space.

If only I hadnt bought some Sony wireless NC ones on special a few months back ….

  • +1

I was going to post this actually, I was hanging out for these and picked them up the second they went on sale today. Reviews for these are next level so I can't wait to try them out. This update tomorrow sounds big too although I have no idea what it is.

  • I heard these are uncomfortable to wear for long periods. Can anyone comment on this?

    • I had this problem. They hurt my ears when I had them on for more than a few minutes. The inner ear part of the headphone put too much pressure on them. They say you have to ‘wear them in’, but I still had the same problem after a few weeks. Ended up selling them. I hope they come out with an around ear model at some point! @ryan-g !

      • That'd defeat the entire purpose of the nuraphone…

    • Its definitely new feel but I find that you get use to it and its ok over time

  • OP, you should include the 3.5mm jack cable on this deal.

  • I bit the bullet on this - thanks OP.

  • I also have a set of these (bought through kick-started) and am amazed at the sound quality. I have quite a few set of headphones and these are the best I have owned. Even the bass is so huge, the whole headphones shake!

  • Have a pair on kickstarter and can say these are my favourite and most extensively used set (not that it's very big), prop charging cable is a bummer but i carry it in it's case so it's not a complete deal breaker…

  • These are back on sale at 2pm today :) Gonna grab a set then.

  • +1

Hey everyone, just letting you know Amazon was impressed with yesterday's sales and have decided to push us again for the second half of prime day. I have updated the OP.

  • Been lurking waiting for a deal on the Sony WH-1000-MX2's, just pulled the trigger on these instead.

    • +1

Thank you! Remember, our support staff is local and we can help you with anything from app support to getting the right fit.

      • Oh my GOD!! Listening to Cradle of Filth- Hallowed be thy name as I type this and I have goosebumps… Never heard it like this before!

Tried it on electronic, classic rock, metal etc… Can't fault it.. Can't wait to retune once the silicone more adjusted.

This is a GREAT product, thank you so much!

Want to switch to my wife's P20 to see if there's a difference in sound quality tho, might just buy a new phone just for these!

  • Hmm very tempting. Interesting that reviews say they sound horrible without EQ, but better than Sony or Bose with your personal profile. OP, how about a new model that sound equal to Sony or Bose without EQ, and better than HD 800s with? Even better have a few different settings.. studio, street, base head etc. then they could replace a few different cans.

  • OP, how much do you know about these? I assume the EQ is based on the wearers ear canal? So, I guess they wouldn't compensate for hearing loss at certain frequencies due to age?

    • +1

I work here so I know a lot.

The nuraphone runs a test on your hearing the first time you use it, an adaption on Otoacoustic Emission (a test usually used on infants with hearing difficulties). From there, an algorithm matches your hearing sensitivities to the encoded frequency levels to play music the best way you can hear, based off the way the music was intended to sound. Simply put, like glasses for your ears :) They certainly compensate, and we have had many reviews from older folk with hearing difficulties describing how their sound profile brought them to tears.

Swipe and watch the last video: https://www.facebook.com/593578030792140/posts/9713691596796…
      https://www.reddit.com/r/Nuraphone/comments/8z021p/nuraphone…

      • Thanks, OP. I don't have trouble hearing, but going on 52, I know some songs, just don't sound the way I remembered them when first heard (even though I have much better cans now). Thinking, maybe you can reprofile every year to compensate somewhat for age (like when I get new glasses every couple of years;-)).

I have been wavering on getting some HD 800 S', But they are a bit out of my budget. I guess the big question, if I pull the trigger, would I be reaching for these over my HD 650's or Oppo PM-3's???

        • Second big question… Does the DAC handle DSD over USB?

      • Just out of interest, can you tell us (if it's not trade secret) whether the process include phase adjustment or just frequency and amplitude? It'll be amazing if the sound stage is also tuned. Cheers (bought a pair and can't wait)

  • +2

Just offering my opinion in as a Kickstarter backer as well.

As far as musical balance goes, it's close to the tuning of the ATH-M40x, just with a touch more bass.

Everyone's hearing is different so if you have a preference for certain sound signatures that's what it's going to get close to. You can however increase the bass through the immersion mode if you feel the bass is lacking and it can be quite powerful.

Because of the in-ear and outer ear design the Nuraphones are have quite a bit of bass but the mid and high tones will actually be quite clear. Bass is played on the outer ear and and the rest with the in ear portion.

The only downside I seem to have it because of the silicone material, I get quite hot with it on and it builds up condensation in the cups.

The new firmware came out today and it offer social mode, which lets you hear all external noise around you while you play music or whatever, that was pretty amazing. I haven't tested the Active Noise cancelling but don't really have anything loud enough to get through the natural acoustics of the music I play. There's also added functionality with the touch controls now enabling single and double taps with left and right sides, thank god for that.

Also note. after tuning, disable all your EQs on your music player/phone, that will only distort the sound signature Nura gives you after measuring.

The build quality is very solid as well and they're on the heavier side if that bothers you.

  • How do these compare with the Audeze iSINE range (LX, 10, and 20 models)?

The whole hybrid in-ear + on-ear/over-ear headphone form factor is so darn inconvenient, but I do sometimes find myself wishing that my headphones were more like my IEMs, and vice versa.

  • Wow, didn't know the company is based in Brunswick!

This deal pushed me over the edge, after seeing ads every day on Facebook and thinking "someday I'll try them". I love my AIAIAI TMA-2s so I'm somewhat skeptical, but very much willing to give them a try at this price. At the very least, they could replace my commuting canalphones (etymotic hf5)..

  • Looks like the deal is finished. I just ordered one 4 minutes ago! I can't wait to get them and try it out.

    • 10 more minutes! Ends at 10pm

      • I stand corrected. The price reverted back to $499.00 on the product page after I had bought it :)

      • I missed out as well. Any more extension?

  • If anyone misses out on this and wants one, pm me and I can send you a referral link with 20% off and free shipping.

Full disclosure: I make no commission but get a free nuraphone if I refer 6 people

  • Darn, missed it again! Hoping for another extension.. >.>

  • +1

Would really love to try in a store prior purchase.

  • Will be interested to hear what people think of these.

Spent a large amount of time yesterday thinking about whether to buy them but convinced myself not to due to their size, use of a propriety cable and this discussion on head-fi.org.

Have FOMO now so will definitely be watching to see if it comes on sale again. :P

  • +1

Boo… Thought I'd receive mine today but it literally just sat at my local depot since yesterday without even moving…

    Shouldn't have added those 36cans of cokes…

    Maybe tomorrow… Hopefully.

Edit' damn got teased and tracking didn't show on board driver… Got an unexpired doorbell at 4pm.

So far omg, I was trying to adjust the microphone on the ear for the first time but didn't pay attention to the part where you can shove your hands on the earcup…. Wasted a few mins on first setup cause of my carelessness, cried when it said "you can take your hands off" afterwards.

    • +2

This was a rollercoaster of a story lol.

  • +2

    HahahaH omg these are FANTASTIC!

    I'm literally grinning!
When you feel the bottom of the ear vibrate abit it feeks abit funny and satisfying 'D

Normally my right ear would crackle a little depending on tracks etc but so far not yet.

I can understand the rave and hype behind these headphones now, thanks for the OZB post otherwise wouldn't have knojwn of their existence :)

It being from Melbourne is great knowing we've produced something with global recognition too.

My comfort zone is around 30% immersion mode, anything higher and it vibrates way too hard.

  • Whoaa I just tried these out for the first time just now. The bass on these are absolutely insane. I'm really surprised by how good these are. The rubber is pretty soft so personally they dont hurt my ears to wear. The noise isolation is very good too.

fyi i have a pair of sony w1000xm2 as well.

Feel free to pm we if you are curious to try a pair and would like a 20% referral code :)

    • How's the sound quality vs the sony xm2?

      • Sound quality is better in my opinion

  • Damn missed out

  • +1

Damn I can't get use to these, sound is amazing but its tiring and fatiguing after an hour, there is a sense of relief everytime I take them off.

It first started out at 80% volume, but now 50% just to not cause as much strain on the ear anymore.

The touch buttons are annoying as you want to try adjust it while listening so they gotta fix that somehow if possible, I'm literally holding it on the edges as much as possible but it still hits the button.

Anyway not everything is perfect so had to give out a fair feedback hoping they'd fix it in their v2 revision/model :(

The auto on/off is alot more convenient than I thought it'd be.

    • Yeah I found the same experience of pressure on the ears. Not physically from the cups or buds (since I'm used to IEMs I found these really comfy), but rather like pressurisation at high altitude. I found the following 2 things helped reduced this alot: I turn ANC off. I repeated the personalisation a number of times in different locations until i got one that was comfortable (did it in the car, engine off and holding my breath, after I cleaned out my ear wax, strange i know). I think external sound might effect the process. I'm enjoying them all day at work, the social mode is awesome, people think I can't hear them, but I can.

Sound is very clear and i can hear details in tracks that i didn't notice before. It sounds a little like the mids are dropped way down on eq and bass and treble bumped up, but i tried that setting on a different set of headphones and the effect wasn't the same. I guess you can say I'm adjusting to sound clarity. I was contemplating returning them due to the pressure discomfort but am going to keep them now. I like the package as a whole.

I like the auto on/off too but didn't like it saying my name every time so i named the profile "You legend"

      • Ya they had a 30 day guarantee so was in the same position.

Like its so easy to take it in and out without the 'folded headphones and zipper', it's so convenient for a short listening session.
