if you use this as a blackberry its frustrating with the keypad typing anything same goes for sms, if you use this as a phone then you are getting ripped off, go and buy an android or apple phone

    • i actually had the older pearl a few years ago, and loved it for its size. typing wasn't anywhere near as bad as what you'd think it is - you get used to it pretty quickly. it's clearly not the same as a full keyboard, but it's way better than the old predictive text on an old nokia!

i now use the blackberry bold - but only because my work doesn't offer the pearl. i'd actually seriously consider the pearl if it was available (although now, having got used to a larger phone again, i'd probably end up picking the bold!).

      • you have to respond to emails then selecting through the characters is not fun.

the size and form factor are good though, probably the second best bb out there

i use the bold for work aswell, if you want better try the torch ;)

    • I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a small BB with the same features as a 9700 bold.

I've used both the 9100 & 9700 for work. Besides the size of the screen & keyboard it functions exactly the same as a 9700 bold.

I'm not a real fan of the torch, because when it comes to replying of composing a email, its still faster to use the keypad. The touch screen is really just for show. If you want the bold to have the same features (minus the lame touch screen) just flash is with OS6.

      • All blackberries funtion the same, its down to the os, the torch has an exellent touch screen sounds like you used the one before the firmware update.

Its not the size, the pearl doesnt have the same keyboard its more like a phone pad with letters above it instead of letter keys with numbers above it.

        • the pearl isn't quite as bad as a nokia phone pad with letters above - there's only 2 letters per key, and it works surprisingly well (although i'm speaking of the older pearl 8100 - i can only assume the 9100 is as good, if not better, than the old pearl). i never really had any troubles with the keyboard on the old pearl. not to say it's for everyone though…

        • Mikinoz, the 8100 series functionality was not even close to the first series bold 9000. Where as the functionality of the 9100 is virtually identical to the 9700 except for the keyboard.

achw, the 9100 is 100x better then the 8100 series…

        • Blitzr, Yes thats correct, i was being as specific as you were (not very)

so now its functionality not features?

totally agree on the 9100 being better although it is not a business phone , more like for blackberry starters

The way you word things ie virtually identical, doesnt appear you are committed to your opinion, yet you want to argue? let me put it to rest , they are both good, one is aimed at business (bold) the other is aimed at the consumer market (pearl) after that who cares i dont sell the damm things

        • I actually use the 'suretype' keyboard on my storm (ie: the 2-letters per key). It's predictiveness (is that a word?) is heaps better than a standard old-school number pad predicitve text. I find i can actually type faster one-handed with suretype than two handed full qwerty.

with the customisable dictionary and auto-correct options, you can even make sure it knows your common words that aren't actually common to the rest of the world. it'll also use entries in your contacts list as part of it's predictive look-up list.

if i wanted a nice compact email phone, i'd get one of these. But with that screen size it's not great for internet browsing.

Note also though you'll need a special Blackberry plan (or addon) to use the email/internet features.

        • i could never get used to the screen clicking down like a button, but good effort for the first touchscreen bb
