15" MacBook Pro for $1195 and others DISPLAY MODELS JB Hifi

120

This is for the old models (just replaced today)

I just picked up a 15" MacBook Pro from JB Hifi $1195. Its the entry level i5 model of the range that just got replaced today. IMO this is a great deal considering the upgrade won't make a difference to my computer use.
Artarmon is now sold out of most models I believe but I rang around a few stores and they were willing to do the same price and had display models. Some wont give them to you until they receive the new model though because they dont want empty shelves.
You might be lucky and get a store with stock.

Other deals which you may be able to get matched were:
Maccentric in Chatswood was selling the 13" entry MacBook Pro for $750 and the 17" i5 2.53 for $1399.
Dont even bother with NextByte.

Shop around, you can probably beat my price, JB seem to be the place to go. Receipt attached.

Good luck!

So it's the old models then ?

    • yes.

      • -1

How much is it normally ?

        Did you save $5, $50, $500 ???

        • -6

Being macs, I reckon no matter how much he saved, he was still being ripped off.

was $2096 before the new ones were released

although keep in mind the new macbook pro 13" is $1399 with

    13-inch: 2.3 GHz
    2.3GHz dual-core
    Intel Core i5
    4GB 1333MHz
    320GB 5400-rpm1

    • i did think of that but i wanted the screen size and wasn't too concerned about the upgrade.

    • Also keep in mind… these have new gfx cards. Some new intel built in gfx cards that we dont know much about yet. They seem a lot better than older intel built in video cards but yeah still keep it in mind. You need the high end new 15" to get dedicated gfx now.

      • Previous model 13" MacBooks/MacBook Pros have integrated Nvidia graphics, not Intel as the 2011 version does. Don't know if the new graphics will be any better (probably yes), but the processors certainly will!

blaze, are they the new gen i5's in the new 13" MacBook Pros?

Not too bad a deal I guess for a demo model. I just don't like the idea of buying something that potentially thousands of people have used. If it came with AppleCare now that would be a decent deal.

    • +1

Yeah, it will have been used by hundreds of people, slammed shut countless times and had the screen run constantly possibly for months. No way. My local JB has a constant flow of people using the Apple stuff, sometimes you have to loiter to get a turn on an iPad to test the games. Weekends the worst, the store fills with literally hundreds of people.

      • my macbooks been doing that for almost 3 years - bar the slamming, still works flawlessly…

        • +1

Exactly, because as the owner you treat it with care, not like some punk kid throwing the thing around the store (exaggerated).

        • -1

i think you missed the bit where i wrote "my macbooks been doing that for almost 3 years - bar the slamming, still works flawlessly…" - i never said i treat it well.
ive known one to still work after falling off the roof of a car at 70km/h so i think a display model will be fine. these machines are built well.

        • +1

I never said i treat it well.

I bet you treat it better than some of the 1000s of JB customers.

Yes, they are built reasonably well (as they should be for the price).

Everyone has different experiences. My house mate had a 13" MacBook, started having troubles with it after about 12-18 months. Took it in for repair and the quote was for around $1000. All he could do was trade it in and fork out for a new one.

It wouldn't really be used much by people if it's a demo model. Most of the time they're password locked or running catalogue screensavers. They don't use the batteries in them either when on demo. Well that was the case with my ex demo laptop computer from JB HiFi anyway.

    • +1

Every JB Hi-Fi I've been to the demo units are disgusting. All dirty and worn out. Never ran into any passwords either since I make it my mission to inverse the colours on every mac in the store!

      • +3

this one is spotless. not a mark on it. and to be honest, at the saving i got, a wipe with a rag isnt that hard if it were dirty. unfortunately the batteries are internal on macbooks but comes with 12 month warranty with the option for apple care. once it's wiped its as new.

        • +1

does wiping with a rag get rid of all the bacteria and viruses ?

        • +2

Wiping with Pine-o-Clean wipes will kill off bacteria. Real world ones obviously.

        • +6

          You're right, i forgot you can't get viruses on a Mac….

        • Yeah, but if I picked my nose and then had my finger swabbed, you'd find Staph as well.

    • It wouldn’t really be used much by people if it’s a demo model.

Things might be different in Adelaide! :P

The ones I visit generally are quite busy (such as the one in Chapel St, Prahran) and always seem to have people trying out the demo Macs; I'd definitely agree with camelgrass that thousands of people have used them.

      • I’d definitely agree with camelgrass that thousands of people have used them.

if just 10 people per day used them, that would be
        70 people per week
        300 people per month
        3,650 people per year…

        • and that would be assuming they were sitting there for a year.

        • if just 10 people per day used them, that would be

More like a couple hundred at the stores I've seen.

And all the kids bashing away at the keyboard and fingers all over the display.

        • Yup, and this particular model was probably on display for nearly a year too (released 13 April 2010)! :P

      • i take it none of you have been to artarmon JB. not a soul there. i see where youre all coming from, i wouldnt get a display from sydney city stores, but it's a bargain, and if you're lucky enough you might find a store with actual stock, not floor stock.
        meh.

  • Old 13" is looking nice for a basic computer at that price, with 9 hours….. pretty much a super netbook? :D

  • Honestly the new 15inch kicks some major ass. Sad that the 13inch just has the Intel HD3000.

    • The main reason you can't get dedicated video on the 13" MacBooks is the small form factor. Apple probably could do it but they would have to sacrifice size/weight/battery life—the very reasons why people buy them.

  • Called everywere in perth, cheapest on a 15" i5 is $1656.

    • really? originally JB quoted me 1530 over the phone without haggling. they then matched maccentric.

  • just get one of the new models better than a display model unless you can get a sealed new old model

  • not bad for a mac

  • demo model apples get smashed down by the public. I wouldn't buy one tbh (Coming from someone who sells them in a retailer). Im also certain the warranty commences once retailers use them, and they're battery life diminishes quite alot over time as retailers just leave them plugged in 24/7.

    • +1

If you buy a demo model it's nearly always the case you get the full 12 months manufacturer's warranty.

      • 12 month warranty once it's registered which it isnt apparently.

        • jb claims that it commences.

        • yeah sorry, i wrote that poorly. jb claimed the warranty would start from the date of purchase as it is listed on the receipt. ive registered it and apple asked for the date of purchase and a copy of the receipt which i emailed off so we'll see how the warranty thing goes.

        • update: for anyone still looking, full 12 month warranty from apple. got an email from apple today confirming.

    • My local JB doesn't have the battery in any of their display model laptops.

      • Really? They're stupid if that's true.

The processor is throttled and overall performance is severely degraded if you attempt to run a MacBook or MacBook Pro without the battery even when connected to the A/C adaptor: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2332

        • it's because people won't steal/take the battery

The processor is throttled and overall performance is severely degraded if you attempt to run a MacBook or MacBook Pro

i doubt the buyers will have access to high-use programs

        • it’s because people won’t steal/take the battery

I forgot that the battery on all recent model MacBooks/MacBook Pros/MacBook Airs is "built-in", with no latch to access it easily. You'd have to unscrew and remove the entire bottom chassis of the laptop to get access to the battery, which wouldn't go unnoticed in store. It'd be very hard to steal, so I doubt they'd remove them (and if they did, the processor would be throttled to 1 GHz).

carlenet's comment might apply to PC laptops rather than Macs. :)

        • so does the cpu still get throttled if the battery is in but discharged?

  • i just purchased mine, cant have it now coz they still need to setup the new model and prep mine (format etc). i was able to price match the above, not much left in warranty though. i actually need it urgently for work so it was a good buy.

    • even if its a demo you should get 12month warranty

  • any one know how much they can go for the 13'one?

  • Maccentric, can only get $750 deal in store? seems like a great deal for the April-2010 model now in Feb-2010.

  • can anyone post the 13"macbook pro's receipt from macccentric?

  • +1

tird maribyrnong jb hifi and highpoint jb next to it, first one was nice enough to say theres no chance here, but Highpoint jb hifi has got to be the worst customer service ever displayed in public, I'm convinced that they hire their employee's from some retard hospital of some sort.

  • if I can get a $750 one I'll buy it. Any one know if education discount work on this?
