Acer Switch 5 SW512-52-71RC Laptop (12" Touchscreen, i7 7500u, 512GB SSDm, 8GB Ram, Includes Keyboard and Pen) $1189 @ JB Hi-Fi

120

Hi all,

I was in the market for a tablet and I thought this was a really good price. JB also has 15% off computers at the moment.

i7 7500u
8GB ram
512GB NVMe SSD storage
Includes keyboard and pen (unlike surface pro/go)

Plus its fanless, and the screen is apparently okay too.

According to https://www.ultrabookreview.com/17821-acer-switch-5-review/ it reviews well. 7500U is 7th gen, so not true quad core like the 8*** series CPU's. But do you really need that in a tablet? Next cheapeast 8550u tablet I could find was about $1600 so I couldn't justify it.

Small Review:

The keyboard is backlit and has an impressive amount of travel
Pen seems to work well
Magnetic attachment between keyboard and device seems very strong
Screen seems okay (maybe not as vibrant as Samsung equivalent)
keyboard is also impressively quiet

For the money I think its great

  • Good deal!

Does O/W have this price-match and 5% less?

I like the Samsung Galaxy, but its $100's more…

It does have a better quality screen, and SIM card slot

    • Doing a quick google, staticice, and pricehipster search shows no other retailers except JB HiFi.
So I don't think anywhere else can price match it

      • Yeah, i voted for it, top find

Q/ Does it have a illuminated keyboard?

    • Half the storage though.

  • I've got one of these (well my kid has one for school), the audio is particularly poor like really tinny and distorts even when not on max - i noticed it straight away when cortana was talking crap setting up windows, it also had a dead pixel, so took it back and swapped for another, the audio on the 2nd one was just as shit, otherwise seemed ok.

    • I missed out on the 256GB model, when JBHIFI had it at $840. I was so angry at Myself back then.
The price changed to this price for the 256, and then went to 1500+ for this model. This was in …. February

  • is it powerful enough to play overwatch ?

    • It's fanless, so perhaps it is on lowest settings, but will get very hot.

  • I picked this one up refrubished for $549.00
    ACER SW512-52-52JU 12"+i5+256SSD+8GB RAM+windows 10- NT.LDSSA.001 × 1
    Refurbished from https://renewd.com.au/
It goes ok for me, but doesnt like to go from tablet mode to keyboard mode and getting out of hibernation. But I think those are windows problems not the units problems

    • The only thing I'd worry about w/refurb is reduced battery life depending on previous owner/age. I wonder how these units rate?

      • I've got no issues with my battery life. It looked like a new unit. But it was missing the pen.
I got it for Uni work, and liked the idea of watching Powerpoint presentations in bed with tablet mode. But its pretty heavy. I still rather use my Lenovo P3 android for watching youtube in bed. I dont really use the tablet mode on the switch5 much at all. It is fanless which is nice. But its heavy and I'm worried that if it falls off bed it may be damaged due to weight. The android tablets fall off all the time without any ill effects. Those these have covers, whereas the tablet does not.
All in all I do like my switch5.
