Advice on Best Way to Sell A Motor Vehicle

Hi. I have a vehicle I need to sell. Rego is due on the 23/9, and there are a few things that need doing (battery & brake Rotors). Any advice on the best sites to sell a 10YO Toyota People mover with 246000k? I have put it on Gumtree, as well as Carsguide so far.

Are you selling it with registration or as-is / unregistered?
    How much are you asking?

    I'd stick with Gumtree.

    • Currently, 6.1k, as I am budgeting in rego/repairs if I need to. It currently owes me 5k, as I took out a personal loan, to pay it out.

You car owes you what its worth, not what you borrowed and need to spend to get it ready for sale.

Cars are bottomless pits where you just throw your money and it burns in the depths of hell.

Its worth getting the car serviced and fixed up by a mechanic. You won't lose the money you spend doing that. Then go take out a personal loan (maybe use one of those online lenders like ratesetter) to clear the encumbrance on the car.

Then sell it for market value. You can get estimates by googling market value toyota xxxx 20xx on the internet or by checking prices on equivalent cars for sale on internet.

        • Carsguide has it @ $8000. I have just dropped it to $4800. I took out an unsecured personal loan, so I could sell it etc.

Advice on Best Way to Sell Acar

Acars are pickled and can be refrigerated for up to a week in a sealed container so I guess you should make sure you have buyers before making it in bulk? I don't think any special licences are needed, cash sales should be fine (but declare that income). Oh just logistically, label your batches with made-on and best-by dates.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Anyway - if you can sell before the rego is due, I'd do that and not worry about the repairs honestly. Don't lie to buyers, but a car that old is on an as-is basis anyway. Don't accept anything but cash or bank cheque. Depending on the price, see if it's worth the listing cost on carsales?

LOL. Has to be present in nasi lemak or it's not authentic. And note that the c in acar is pronounced ch.

      Yeah. You got me .
I have been holding off and I took a loan out. Currently it owes me $5 excluding Repairs/Rego. The brakes have been shuddering for a few months now, and last week, it has started to sound 'metallic'. Hence now I am using an old commodore, till my new car is ready.

      • With the money you make from this sale, I am confident you will be driving Acar from now on.

The issues you have described with the car will NOT add any value to the sale. If you spend $400 on a new battery and new rotors, you won't be able to sell it for $400 more.

    • But may prevent a sale of the car.

If it's been abused to that extent, with over 200k, many buyers would walk away. If basic maintenance hasn't been done, how good will the oil be?!

      • I changed the oil & filter every 7.5K.

        • With receipts or just you?

And what about the rest? When is the last time it had any other maintenance?

        • +1

@Spackbace: I did all the changes myself. I kept a log of it however, I didn't keep the receipts for the oil & filters. I used an App called Fuelio which, I would keep track of Fuel costs on. I mainly used Penrite Oil. No oil leaks. :-)

        • @BewareOfThe Dog:

Yeah that means nothing for resale

And again, when did someone last do anything besides an oil and filter? How long has it been?

        • @Spackbace: I did the Air Filter, but admittedly never did the Fuel Filter. It would be 4 years.

        • @BewareOfThe Dog:

          Ouch.

I think you need to consider just selling it to a wholesaler and copping the hit.

4yrs of no major maintenance is shocking

        • @Spackbace: What major maintenance would be required? He has already admitted that the brakes need changing, it's unlikely the fuel filter needs to be changed and if the last time the coolant was changed it was of high quality it will be fine as well. ATF fluid doesn't need to be changed, it's a Toyota so timing belt will need to be done but most likely was done at 200k. OP doesn't say how long he has owned it.

        • @miicah:

10yo, 246,000km = 24,600km/yr on average. That timing belt should've been done 2yrs ago or so, yet it's been 4yrs since a qualified mechanic last checked it out.

Either that or the previous owner hammered the kms.

        • @miicah: 5 years.
I am waiting for some quotes from the Austioneers/wholesalers.

        • @Spackbace:
Why would op do the timing belt on a vehicle with a timing chain. There is very little major maintenance required on a 2008 tarago (I'm assuming tarago).

        • @brendanm:

          Avensis

But you're right, on further research it's chain driven

        • @Spackbace:

And just for the record, timing chains and timing chain guides do wear out.

I would suggest that an engine with poor service history and extensive km travelled, such as OP’s, that there is a chance that at some time in the near future, this engine may require the tensioner guide replaced, if not an engine overhaul.

        • +1

          @pegaxs:
Op has changed the oil and filter every 7.5k, the motor will probably outlast him. The thing that kills 2azs is no oil changes.

246,000km, 10 years old, needs work and is encumbered. Good luck with your asking price. Be ready for what you will consider as low-ball offers if you even get any.

Work out what your pay out figure is and use that as your lowest price so you can at least break even. Don't be surprised if you don't get any offers even close to what you are asking.

Do some homework and check out what others have the same car listed for. Ring a wholesale buyer and get an idea of what the trade in value might be.

    • Personal loan - I'd assume it's unencumbered, that op took out loan so it didn't have car finance owing on it

    • So far I've only had scammers.

  • with the millage and no log book service by professional, it already sound alarm bell.

People nowadays will make sure the car tick all the box before they even come for inspection.

Sorry i think $3K would be more realistic and may be a visitor for working holiday may come and pick it up.

Fix the car before you sell will be better.

    • You might be surprised at what people will buy in that price range. $5-6k isn’t a lot of money for a car and after an inspection someone who is going to do their own repairs or run it into the ground might not care too much about a service history. I sold a car for $3k and regular servicing by a mechanic was not mentioned (nor done). Of course, it would need to be priced accordingly to account for the risk. I suspect a lot of cars of that age/kms/price don’t go near a mechanic except for annual inspections, spending a few hundred on repairs is a high percentage of the purchase price, and often not worth it.

  • Yikes!
    4 years no maintenance…

Put it on gumtree for $3K AS IS. Make the buyer sign a waiver saying the car is “AS IS”.

Changing the oil yourself doesn’t count as maintenance. It’s fine to DIY things but having your car regularly checked by a qualified mechanic is something that I see as essential and would have me running away fast if it has nothing for 4 years.

Take it somewhere and get a list of what needs doing.

It probably needs new tyres, new brakes, new wipers

    • Tyres and wipers (I replace the arms as well) are fine. I have never had a knockback on the Pinkslip, as I regularly check the bulbs etc

  • On a side note, I did have a Mechanic provide an inspection when the Brake pads were replaced 2 years ago.He found nothing extra wrong.

  • where are you located? if in Vic/Qld, you will need an RWC to sell it (while you can sell unregistered without RWC, good luck getting anything more than a pittance for it).

if in SA/WA, or in NSW and you can get a pink-slip for it at the next rego renewal, it'll be easier to sell to someone who just needs a people mover.

EDIT - you mentioned pink slip above so youre in NSW. get it registered for the next 12 months with pink slip and you should be able to sell it for $4k/$5k.
