Crazy Neighbour Is Slashing Tyres

Asking for a friend.

My mate was car-minding and parked the car on the street. After a couple of nights, two tyres got slashed. It was a pain in the butt, but they just wrote it off as vandalism.

Fast forward a few weeks and they parked their own car in the same spot. After the second night, my mate is about to drive to work when she notices two tyres slashed (same side, on the curbside). She was pretty upset and calling her partner, when the dude comes out of the house directly outside where her car was "checking" on the commotion. Dude says "oh must be the druggos around here" with a smug look on his face.

Reported to the popo, but unless she catch him in the act there's not much they can/will do.

So now turning to our great ozb community, what are the options? Bikies might not be an option in case they are Bikies themselves.

    Install front and rear dash cam.

    Park car in same spot again and catch person doing it. Alternative is to never park there again.

    • +11

      But they are slashing from the side!

      • They will have to approach the car from the front or rear

        • +2

          not if they're walking on the sidewalk and it's curbside!

        • +118

          @b0rat: only if they approach from inside OPs house. Think about it.

          ...........|...OPs house...|....
          walk->..........................<-walk
          _________:=car==:_____
          =========road========
          ______________._______
          ...........|..other house..|....

          To approach the car from the side only, they would have to come from either the OPs house or the house on the other side of the road. In any other case they will need to walk along the footpath towards it from the front or from behind.

          @Quantumcat:

          awesome diagram.

          .

        • +16

          @Nugs: now do ASCII porn!

        • +23

          @Quantumcat: I don't see the slashed tyres in that diagram? is it supposed to be this?

          ………..|…OPs house…|….
          walk->……………………..<-walk
          _________;=car==;_____
          =========road========
          ______________._______
          ………..|..other house..|….

        • +45

          @Quantumcat:

          We have moved on from badly drawn MS Paint diagrams… this is now the new Gold Standard. :D

        • +5

          What is a sidewalk?

        • +3

          @kallico: In the U.S. people walk on them on the sides of roads on which they sit on their arses riding their asses. I've never seen one here in Aus. though.

        • -1

          Never seen what - a sidewalk!? If so, sidewalk has always been Australian, and 'curb' is American. The expression 'kick you/it to the curb' is American!

        • @Quantumcat: if they're slashing the tyres from the roadside, then rear and front cameras will do nothing because they would never pass over either either to slash the other side too unless they slash both sides….?

        • @Zachary: if you see the diagram you'll see they have to approach from either the front or the rear to reach the side

        • @Quantumcat: OzB needs a monospaced font…

        • @GregMonarch:

          Actually Greg, a "kerb" is the raised area alongside a road. A "sidewalk" is actually American (Google it), whilst a "footpath" is british. Both "sidewalk" and "footpath" terms are used to describe an area that is walkable by pedestrians, as opposed to a "kerb".

        • @gitl: I'm early 50s and sidewalk and footpath has always been used interchangeably where I live (NSW), back when there was no internet, nor much contact at all with the USA unless you were a rich family that went to Disneyland. The person above (deleted) equated curb with sidewalk.

        • @GregMonarch:

          I'm in my late 40's and it was always footpath for me (same as in the UK) in QLD. Back then there was TV - the US shows were the source of "sidewalk" ;)

          But … in anycase, poTAEto, poTAHto. It's like "kerb" vs "curb".

        • @Quantumcat: If they're using the walkways, sure but what if they're not and walking from the other side of the road that doesn't have a footpath established on?

          For example, using your illustration:

          ………..|…OPs house…|………………….
          walk->………………………………..<-walk
          _________:=car==:________________
          =========road===================
          ______________._________________
          <Person walking on non-footpath>
          ………..|..other house..|………………….

          EDIT: Meh…

      • +1

        Install camera on side window…

        • How about camera in side mirrors?

        • @icecream: Cameras inside the wheels.

      • +1

        This scenario is useless unless there is something in the recording that is personally identifiable. Police will claim that anyone could cut the tyre in the household, it could be a neighbour crossing lawns than walk side on to the car, someone jumping a back fence etc.

        Unlikely, but police need hard evidence otherwise there is no case if the people inside the household deny the claim.

        A bit off-topic but a friend of a friend was on bail, police arrive to his house and randomly pee test him. Results come back positive to cocaine in his system, and he goes back to jail and court straight after for sentencing. His lawyer claimed that minutes before the policing arriving, he was counting money about 90% of money has cocaine residue in the US and that the residue got into his pours, blood stream and tested positive to cocaine. He was immediately released.

        There is a million possibilities without a face and hard evidence. That person was using cocaine, but the evidence wasn't enough.

      • -3

        cam or get gun as you shot him it must be druggos around here. other wise there all way put few cam and keep eye out seam like total (profanity) head.

        • From camera to shooting someone… well, that escalated quickly… ain’t nobody shooting anyone over some vandalised tyres…

        • @pegaxs: Brings new meaning to a photo shoot

      • If they are smart they can duck themselves down or have a mask you won't identify them anyway.

        Don't try to use tech to solve problems. I don't believe it will work

        Anyone who is tech savvy would know if the car has a dash cam

    • +1

      Paint diagram please.

  • +17

    Smugness does not equate to guilt.

    • +4

      More info, dude and his family has 6 cars that regularly park on the street/in front of his house.

      • +26

        A smug guy with family and vehicles does not equate to guilt.

      • +2

        Was your car in front of his house? Perhaps he thinks he is entitled to park in front of his own house.

    • Can confirm. 😏

      Some people have a genetic predisposition to looking smug.

      Our neighbour, which people assume cuts tires because it happens in the same spot in front of his house and he complains about cars being parked in front of his house, has more of a shifty look.

      But looking shifty is also heritable.

      • Can confirm.

        I can confirm your confirmation.

        I have the perma smug and shifty combo.

        My cause of death is likely "kicked in the nads".

  • +4

    Why not temp. Install on the left side. The guy won't expect it. Catch him in the act.

    • Because when caught, the guy might smash the window and steal the dashcam?

      • Gotta be incognito about it. Need to have a camera that can catch the person but without them being able to easily see that it is filming them. Either that or have a camera in another car/location that would catch someone in the act and lay the trap

  • +7

    take the poop in a bag on a door step approach

    • +2

      you forgot to ring the door bell and light it on fire

      • +32

        Why would you light the doorbell on fire?

        • +34

          So when they stomp on it to put out the fire it rings again.

        • +5

          @JIMB0:

          Ring Ring, its a Shit Show!

    • +1

      shit bagging can only end badly

  • +1

    Wasn't their a post on here a while back about someone parking in front of their house.. Maybe they chose the bikie option

  • +2

    Catching them in the act, may not be the best outcome. I would find it difficult not to kill the person in the heat of the moment.

    • +2

      Someone needs to lighten up.

  • +1

    Not liking someone and laughing at their misfortune does not equal them revealing guilt of committing a crime

    Get a battery trail cam and stick it on the drivers side chair - it should see them but good luck proving who it is unless they do it in broad daylight but at least you can do something back to them as you know who done it to you .

    • Do they have night vision?

      • +2

        Most do but you are going to have to play around with the location/angle to avoid reflection

        Other alternative is to also buy a motion light and stick it on the side of the car

      • Some have invisible infrared LED's, they call them no glow I think.

  • +6

    "oh must be the druggos around here" with a smug look on his face…

    …while cleaning his fingernails with a knife. Now THAT would've been badass.

  • +1

    Used to also have issues in parking in Spring Hill Brisbane. Used the visitors park on weekends at my friend's unit. Came back to find a few a4 sheets with the unit's parking regulations heavily glued on with glue stick and the air let out of my front passenger tyre. They had assumed I was living nearby and using the space. Or just wanted to stop me from parking there. Managed to get the glue off but drove on the flat, breaking it and was out $196 as it was a performance tyre. Also had it keyed when parking near a drug and alcohol recovery housing apartments. I guess people get jealous, randomly attack or want the space.

    • Do you drive a 'loud' car/import?

      • wasn't loud at all, just a silvia.

        • +7

          Is there such a thing as a quiet Silvia?

        • +1

          @JIMB0: stock na silvia q's was about as loud as a corolla

  • +9

    Guessing you're parking in someones public 'spot'.

  • +6

    Is it a high yield investment vehicle?

    (Sorry, had to include the obligatory meme as I saw the bikies meme as well)

    • +1

      Was going to be a high yield investment, but once he purchased and checked under the bonut thingy…

      • Silvia q's, not too much under the bonut.

  • +2

    Slash the tyres on all 6 of his vehicles? (No, not actually).

  • +4

    Install camera on house pointing at parking spot with 24hr recording.
    Include neighbours front yard / driveway in the coverage
    (but don't point it directly at their property).

    • Install camera on house pointing at parking spot with 24hr recording.

      This is the best way. We had a different issue (more of an annoyance than damage) with a neighbour a couple of years ago. We couldn't do anything until we caught her in the act with video evidence and confronted her. She literally denied everything until I told her that we have video and we could call the police. She apologised and I requested her not to do it again. I think she has some mental issues.

    • +1

      had some neighbors go through the same thing. they installed security lights and cameras all over the place because some wannabe mafioso types kept slashing their tyres.
      I even asked them if it would be alright if i parked on the street next to their car. I cover them with my dash cams, they cover my car with their house camera
      win-win!

      • Tyre slasher wears a balaclava, check-mate camera.

  • Sorry to hear that some people have no respect for other people's property. I suggest reporting each incident to police which documents a history incase things continue/escalate. But ultimately they aren't going to do much unless you have video evidence of the perpetrators.

    • +1

      They probably aren't going to do much even if you do have a video.

      • Got video where you know the person depicted? Easy charge of malicious damage.

  • +1

    how do you slash tyres? very sharp knife??!

    • +1

      Stab and drag out?

      • +22

        ^ found the slasher. Good work skillet.

      • +8

        How about overpressurise some special tyres so when someone tries to do it, the knife explodes back and all of a sudden the neighbour needs to go hospital for some ‘unknown knife accident’

        • +7

          or fill the tyre with paint so that when it pops, the culprit gets showered with purple paint?

        • +3

          @vietbargain:

          Nah fill it with cement, then you won't have issues with a flat tyre anymore.

        • +3

          Fill them with bees so when you slash the tyres, it shoots bees at you.

        • +1

          @YellowDieselGolf:
          genetically engineered hornets too, not just bees!

        • @vietbargain: I think the paint would dry pretty quickly, and then you'd have tyre problems…

        • +1

          Sharks with frickin laser beams!

  • move to an area with less druggos

  • +6

    ‘druggos’ wouldnt mind targeting one of their six cars right?

    • +1

      Then come out and say must be the druggos to them with a smug face

    • it was the first thing i suggested, however we are trying not to stoop down to their level

    • +2

      or all 6 potentially, they are druggos after all.

  • +1

    Let the tyres down yourself when you park it. That way they will see no need to slash and you can pump them up next time you want to use the car.

    • +8

      Better yet remove the wheels; no wheels, no tyres to slash.

      • Better yet remove the car altogether - no car no wheels no tyres no worries.

      • OP's friend will need to remove only two wheels.

  • +3

    Park an old bomb in front of his house (I assume that's where you're parking and he's having whinge about it).

    • -1

      i was thinking about this and park it there for a few weeks before the council tows it.

      • +6

        If it's registered, nothing they can do about it

        • Assuming that there are no parking restrictions.

        • Buy a cheap bomb with 12 months rego.
          Legally parked and registered = a year of payback.

  • +1

    i was thinking that we could park two cars in front of each other.

    let one car get targeted for tyre slashing, whilst the other car dashcam records from behind/infront. however this will probably result in another two tyres needing to be replaced for a chance to catch them in the act, and assuming we can track them down too.

    any ideas about what happens if we ever catch the culprit? do we take them to court or something?

    • -2

      Obviously Bikies.
