Overpaid for an Item

Hello,

My friend had recently bought a pair of glasses for $500 and the same model can be bought elsewhere for $150. That's an over payment of over 300%.

Is this perfectly legal?

    Yes

    • +6

      ^ Agree.

Your friend obviously has money to blow if they buy something off the cuff without even a googling to get a feel for RRP.

  • +46

    Is this perfectly legal?

    Yes.

  • +38

Should people be so stupid they over pay 300%?

    • +93

I think that's the real question here.
Is it legal for someone to be so stupid.

      • +8

        Legally blonde.

      • +2

        Yes.

    • +3

      yes

It's nothing to do with intelligence.

      • +4

It is EVERYTHING to do with intelligence when you make such an expensive purchase without spending 5 seconds in a web search engine.

      • +1

        Hahahahahahaha

      • Case in point…

    • +8

I bought a loaf of bread for $1.80 late this afternoon, then realised when I got to the car the missus wanted a French Stick also, when I went back in the bread was marked down to .50c is this legal?!

  • +6

    yes

  • +49

    It wasn't an overpayment.
The goods were offered at the price. Your friend accepted the offer. The contract was satisfied.

    "Should have went to OzBargain…"

    • +1

      Should have gone*

  • +14

Introduce them to OzBargain, teach them the power of the dark side..

    • +4

      DEALS! UNLIMITED DEALS

  • +19

should you EVER pay $500 for glasses!?!?

    • +8

      No

    • +6

Depends if the prescription lenses are included!

    • +1

I have prescription Maui Jim Hookipa sunnies, about $680. Claimed 2 years of optical benefits (bought in Dec and settled in January) to bring them down to about $380, but it’s one of those things that it’s impossible to get a cheapie that will do the same thing with the same quality (curved prescription lenses, perfect clarity and focus at every angle, excellent polarisation).

On the other hand my normal glasses are $60 including prescription lenses from Zenni. They’re better looking than anything I saw at the optometrists locally for less than half the price.

      • It's likely the lenses in both pairs are made in the same lab/factory

      • According to an optometric you should not buy a branded sunglasses and replace the lenses. Apart from the name it is the lens that is the expensive part, and if you are just going to replace the lenses with prescription ones, you are better off buying a cheap frame.

  • +1

    not over payment.

  • +1

    buy low sell high

    • +2

      That’s MY motto…

      • +1

You should quit your job at the power plant and become a full-time stock market… guy

  • -6

    Cool story bro

  • +8

No not perfectly legal. But will disqualify your friend joining OzBargain.

    • +1

or maybe they are the perfect candidate to join ozbargain…

      • Does not meet Social Credit System rating.

  • What's the build date? Could be a runout model.

    :D

  • +6

    Is this perfectly legal?

Is it perfectly legal for the other seller at $150 to be ripped off by $350?

    • +14

      Hi OzBargain,

Someone bought a pair of glasses off me for $150 and I later found out that they're actually worth far more because some schmuck bought them elsewhere for $500.

      Was I robbed?

  • +24

The salesgirl must have been aaaamaaaazing!

    • +1

      Or the salesman…

      • +25

How dare you insinuate binary options!

        • +3

You would need all the variations available to have bought them at the at price.

        • @try2bhelpful:
The number of staff you'll need to cover the spectrum, the business will have to be moving $500 sunglasses with a conveyor belt set to turbo.

        • +4

@tshow: Maybe just a couple of employees that are extra flexible in their attitudes.

    • +3

I'm guessing the friend is a guy, and the sales person was an attractive female and the sale went like this… "Wow those glasses make you look hot!"

      • +3

No joke, I can't say with 100% confidence that I'd be immune to that.

    • +1

      34DD at least

      • +4

        I would have a bought a pair.

        Sunglasses. A pair of sunglasses.

        • +1

Would end up overpay and afterpay though

  • +2

$500 for a pair of sunglasses holy moly - your friend is not an ozbargainer!

  • +12

    pair of glasses for $500

Great high yield investment, is he (you) a broker for Westpac?

  • +29

link to sunglasses please. i want to find the same style on aliexpress for $9

  • +1

Was the increase due to new bank fees

    • +2

      no, farmer levy

  • +3

    A couple of things:
    a) is your friend insane buying sunglasses for $500 - does he/she work for an industrial military complex? Sunglasses are the things you either leave behind at a restaurant or drop on the ground and break the lens whilst waiting for a tram.
    b) the $150 site might have counterfeit glasses, rather than the genuine article. My brother has a great pair of Okleys he bought from a stall holder in Asia - but then he was under no illusion they were actually Oakleys.

    • Don't tell me your brother paid $150 to the stall holder in Asia; surely no?

      • Nowhere near that, he buys sunglasses by the handful because he is always losing them. I assume he would've paid sub $10 a pair.

        • +8

careful of fake uv rating from cheapies with crap lens that damages eyes

        • +1

@phunkydude: I agree with you on the UV rating. I buy Serengeti’s from a reliable DFO outlet. They are half price, but still not cheap, but they are the best sunglasses I’ve ever had.

        • +1

          @phunkydude:

          Yeah this!

Don't wear knockoff sunnies - they don't protect your eyes from UV. And in fact, because they're tinted, you're more likely to have the sun in your eyes and not care.

        • @phunkydude: They look cool, that's the main reason most people get sunglasses :)

  • $500 should be enough guarantee they're not fake $150 sunglasses.
Be satisfied you have the real deal.

    • This. So far you haven't told us the exact thing your friend bought. Can't say much if it's really overpaying or he or she just bought the real thing.

  • Willing buyer Willing seller

  • Interested in what model it was LOL

  • Seller can sell it for $1 million dollars or $1 and It would still be legal.

  • Yes

  • Details?

  • Did he purchase of broden?

  • The company I work for hands the safety sunglasses out for free to employees as they want you to wear PPE at home as well. It should therefore be illegal for a shop to charge anything at all for sunglasses, in fact they should pay me to go to their store and take them.

  • -1

Why didn't you ask if it was legal for the other store to sell them at $150? Not saying it is illegal but in some scenarios, that could be considered as predatory pricing.

  • Hello, I had recently bought a pair of glasses for $500 and the same model can be bought elsewhere for $150. That's an over payment of over 300%. I am so stupid. Please laugh at me!

  • +3

is this a serious question? bread at Coles is $1 in 7 eleven services station $3.50, what is the difference.

    • +2

I actually like paying more for nicer bakery bread. Will start a thread asking if legal

      • +1

My local corner store sells the same bread as the supermarket for 100% markup, want the address?

    • What about the coffee at 7-Eleven. Different prices, same sizes

  • +1

So by friend you mean you. And by overpaid you mean suckered. Maybe your "friend" should shop around for prices before buying.

  • It's a free world buddy, people can set there prices as high as they like.

  • hence the saying 'there's a sucker born every minute'

  • don't let them know. ignorance is bliss

  • -2

guys my friend (actually me) bought a car (high yield amg) for $200k, however people now tell me i can get a car (corolla) for 90% less, at only $20k!!!

    Is this perfectly legal?

    • +1

not really an accurate comparison relevant to topic

  • +4

This is actually very illegal. I don't know if you're aware but there are laws in this country where items must be the same price as other stores.

    • -2

Lmao what country are you in?

      • +27

        Sarcasia.

    • This is sort of true for some items, these items are considered "regulated".

  • +3

Call the cops, they'll put your friend in jail for being a goose and buying something without googling the price first.

  • +10

    My friend = Me

  • +2

Ahhh classic. My friend bought blablabla and then no more posts from OP lol

  • If this is a serious thread (I doubt it), couldn't your "friend" just try refunding it?

Usually these overpriced places at least have good customer service.

  • +2

WhAATT????? You can get sunglasses for $500? I paid $900 for mine??????

  • +1

What else does your friend want to buy? I've got lots of things to sell to him :)

  • Of course it's legal. If it was paid by credit card, check whether they have price guarantee insurance. I've never used it but I like the concept.

  • +1

No, since both items are overpriced. Damn you Luxotica and your monopoly practices…

  • Should've checked ebay, ROOKIE mistake Shane!!!

  • Read in Frodo's voice: Oh, Sam..

  • did he get glass wine well be (profanity) on the price?

  • Simple answer just ask the nice seller for a refund done.

  • Yes, people rip off each other all the time. I had my fair share of being ripped off. Overpaid $5000 for a car, overpaid $100,000 for a house, overpaid $3000 for a mattress.
