I've personally never understood 0% alcohol beer? What's the point?

    • +9

Some people like beer and don't just drink it to get drunk.

      • +21

        I don't understand

      • +5

        Ye those people need alcohol.

        • +1

How about… some people are on P-plates, but want to hide their nerdiness.

          • +4

@KentT: Then drink coke with ice or something. No one sane would drink beer for the 'taste' if there's zero alcohol content. Either they're a smoker with zero concept of taste buds or have some on-going concussion issues.

          • +1

@KentT: Then say you're the deso? If you're on your P's, it's pretty well established you can't drink

      • +5

Some people like beer and don't just drink it to get drunk.

Sure thing, are they the same people who get girly magazines for the articles?

      • +2

        Beer without alcohol isn't beer.

        Sugar cigs is a thing

      • +1

Apparently even though this is 0.00% it will be marketed only to adults in strict accordance with the Alcohol Beverages Advertising Code.

That doesn't dictate who drinks it though.

        • Are they allowed to hand out free beer though?

          • +2

@nismo: if alcohol less than 1%, cmiiw, it can be sold in supermarket (dont have to be in liquor store). kombucha has alcohol in it

            • @brongz: …or that cider that's sold at Ikea in cans. The packaging specifically states "0.1% alcohol".

            • @brongz: Rice Wine Vinegar excepted, and a few other products.

    • +3

It's a bit like vegan sausages.

      • I mean you eat food because it's food, not because something had to bleed and die for it.

It's like snorting wizzfizz. gets kids ready to snort cocaine when they get older.

I've personally never understood 0% alcohol beer? What's the point?

      Same thing with condoms.

    • +2

its very popular in japan. partly because of the 0% tolerance for drink driving, social aspects, refreshing taste (very comparable to normal beer) and asian flush

    • +1

Beer is supposed to be a probitic (should be prebiotic), so it's got the same health benefits on kombucha …one is fermented barley, the other is fermented tea, but beer is cheaper than Kombucha.

  • +1

Can you technically put this in the alcohol category? lol

  • +2

    Can you provide a review?
I'm always on the lookout for low alcohol drinks, and this might be worth a try.

  • +23

Finally, the great taste of Carlton without the downside of getting drunk and enjoying yourself!

    • +3

Finally, the great taste of Carlton without the taste….

  • OP, can you post up a review? I'm assuming it's terrible.

    • +1

no worse than some hipster session beers … I'm an american pale ale style drinker so it didn't have a strong enough taste for me, but then I reckon asahi lacks flavour.

  • +1

    Yea Nahhhh

  • +14

Lisa: Wow, a hidden staircase. But what do you do if someone wants a non-alcoholic beer?

Apu: You know, it's never come up…

    • +3

I'm a sucker for a good Simpsons reference, but that is one of the most apt, and amusing ones I've heard in a while.

      • Mwah, Mwah! I live to give.

      • Homer: Here's to alcohol: the cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems.”

    • I just realised that that was in an episode about vegetarianism (veganism?) so… irony.

  • free kick in the arse as well i presume?

    Jesus (profanity) Christ.

Go have a mocktail or something. Beer 9 times out of 10 tastes like shit as it is, the ONLY saving grace it has is the alcohol.

Give me an alcohol free Jack and Coke though, and if I can pick up a slab for 20 odd bucks I'd drink it over normal Coke just as a soft drink.

Speak for yourself, I love beer!!

Lol…. How long have you been sitting on that gem?

Perfect for that work meeting your on your way too. Saves buying a coke zero

Carlton Zero: When your mate is super hammered and wont stop drinking, just feed them these bad boys and watch your night slowly get easier.

Alcohol free so no tax, but Dan's is charging $40 a case!! Rediculous. If it really does taste like beer then it might not be a bad option with lunch if you have to drive. I still wouldn't pay more than 50c a bottle.

    • +3

Could be a good option to drink at any time, but I don't understand why it is that price.

      • +1

Dans have a german 0% beer, 6x500ml cans for $10 …much better value than the carlton cans.

    • even water is > 50c / bottle

      • -1

        Not out of a tap

        • You're not buying this stuff out of a tap though. But $40 does seem high. $30 sounds about right to me.

  • Is it a giant can or is your hand tiny?

    • How rude!

  • no soul beer

  • +1

    Still too expensive

  • +1

I've tried this (0.0%) in a couple of Islamic countries and it's just undrinkable. No taste, no body, not much of anything.

I can't imagine there is a sustainable market for it in Oz.

    • +1

That is why I was hoping someone who received a free can today can provide a review.
This is a new product; I have tasted many 0.00 / low % beers from many places but not this one.

Apparently low and mid-strength beers are 20% of CUB sales in Aust, and sales of non-alcoholic beers has grown 57% over the last 5 years.
I think Aust is just lagging behind the trends that have occurred in Europe, US, Canada, and that has prompted CUB to invest in the category.

      • Yes, I'd be interested in trying it…. I haven't enjoyed the others I've tried, but in fairness they are not beers I'm familiar with, they may taste just as bad if they contained alcohol.

    • There is one that does taste nice, it's German and is made from normal beer with the alcohol removed. As such it has a trace amount of alcohol and therefore is probably not suitable for those avoiding it on strict religious grounds.

I forget the name though :(

And yes, the others are awful

      • Maybe Erdinger?

  • +1

Will this fit in my son's school lunch box?

It's nut-free, so you should be okay.

I've read somewhere that Australia is a nation of (somewhat) functioning alcoholics. I wonder if this will catch on. If it tastes half good I'd happily give it a go.

    • no alcohol means less calories , and if you are trying to loose weight but still want a beer it's an option.

The Australian manufacturers haven't really tried to make flavoursome 0% alcohol beer, eg add extra hops to add some bitterness, etc.

  • Your Opal card ends in 08, that's nice.

What's not nice is beer without alcohol. Now if you don't want to get smashed there's ultra light (<1%) but they taste bad.

What do they put in a beer with no alcohol?

  • Guess it stops people getting drunk and crashing at your house, or missing the toilet when they are drunk and go for a pee, or hanging around at your house in general.

Problem is no "beer glasses" so that ugly person won't look more attractive the more you drink.

    • Guess it stops people getting drunk and crashing at your house

      They shouldn't be driving.
