Pros:

  • Android Go with 3yrs of promised updates from HMD Global
  • 4000 mAH battery
  • Band 28 (this is conflicting though, Telstra lists it as 4GX but doesn't mention B28 in the specs)

Cons:

  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB Storage
  • Locked to Telstra (can be unlocked for $25 after 6 months)

Nokia 2.1 review: a tale of misplaced priorities.

Still might be a good cheap phone for kids or to be used as hotspot/backup phone.

    Cons:
    - Nokia 3 can be picked up cheaper (when on special, but is locked to Voda)

        It's not targeted at you!

Honestly, I'd rather have the Nokia (running Android Go) over a similarly priced Huawei or Samsung.

It's fast, not buggy and (since it's a Nokia) close to stock Android as you can get. Guaranteed updates as well!

the idea is an entry level cheap smart phone with current os, browser, google maps, etc and gets security updates …. a lot of other entry level phones don’t get security updates.

typical people on these tight budgets probably also are on limited data plans so apps that use internet and data streaming might not be primary purpose unless you want to be chained to a wifi hot spot.

          1GB isn't enough. Fact.

          • +2

@PainToad: Have you used it to confirm that 1gb of RAM is a problem on Android Go? You won’t find Android Go on phones with more RAM.

      • +3

Believe it or not, not everyone cares about phones… I just setup the Nokia 3 for my older sister and she's over the moon.

        • Nokia 3 isn't Android Go, doesn't have 1GB of RAM and is a great phone. This one isn't.

      • Nokia 3 can be picked up cheaper (when on special, but is locked to Voda)

Yeah, but that phone is laggy as hell! Cheap phone though. Still $89 at Woolies (locked to Voda) if you can find stock.

Nokia 3 on $89 at Wollies run out of stock quickly. I cannot find any left in store in NSW.

  • 1gb. No.

I read this post on an Xperia T2, 410 with 1gb ram, and its fine.

Its not the 10gb of ram on the latest Oppo, but its still usable, especially for the target market of this phone.

        Cool.

And this is Android GO, which might make a difference.

        • Or you can just buy a Nokia 3 for the same price.

@b2dz: Screen size, battery life are all on 2.1's side though. 3's battery is pretty bad. Also an additional year of updates as well.

Not to mention that 3 is pretty hard to come by these days. The recent Woolies deal is not exactly widely available.

1Gb works for the kids' phones. Shame it's $25 or $14.99 to use on Belong or Aldi…

    • So, the Aldi SIM doesn't work on a Telstra locked phone? It used to be the case (an year or two ago).

      • +3

my test phone is aldi sim and it’s on a telstra locked phone ….works fine.

        • +1

Bought this phone and tried an Aldi SIM. It DID NOT work. Telstra must be cracking down it. I used the unlocking service linked below and now it works without issues.

    • none of your links work

        Ya - that didn't come through :)
Unlock code $14.99 - not tested

Discussion around the Telstra 1Gb/8Gb 4GX Plus:
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/364117

The later 4GX Plus' were locked to Telstra, they did need unlocking to work on Aldi. The earlier ones worked with MVNOs.
        YMMV with the Nokia 2.1

And if Telstra is selling it, it will work on B28 / 700MHz which is 4GX. IMHO a lot of phone for the $$$.

Thanks mate. Bought the code from this link and my ALDI sim works perfectly now.

If this had a second gig of ram it would be a great budget phone.

  • Don't prepaid phone (besides iPhone) updates have to go through their carriers first, though?

Not sure about Telstra, but the Vodafone Nokia 3s comes directly from Nokia.
