  • No green sticker on them, I think I'll stay with WD. >_>

  • Yeah… but i read an article somewhere that choosing a green drives instead of a 7200rpm drive will save u about $10 of electric bill a yr… dunno if thats worth the trouble for the reduction in performance. I mainly choose green drive for a cooler profile in my NAS.

Don't forget less heat and less noise….

  • What is a NAS?

  • Oooh geez that's good. Then again I don't need it for another 4-6 weeks and that'll probably be standard price at centrecom, msy & pccg by then.

    • Sammy 2TB is already $95 @ MSY - whether they have stock is another question

i live in Wagga, in the middle of nowhere… so postage is important to me

        • +3

Yeah, it's definitely a good deal in that regard. I'm simply being self centered and talking about for myself. :P

    • 4-6 weeks from now is when I plan on getting my NAS :D

      • if i were to choose again… i will go qnap for quality or thecus for price….

        • Having had trouble with several Thecus units, I'd go for the quality option.

4-6 weeks is when I'm building a new PC to replace my old dead POS. :( mobo & cpu both died. wahhh. I was going to be doing my NAS then, but apparently it didn't work out that way, haha.

  • not bad for delivered price, has anyone purchased from this store before? otherwise can get it for the same price pickup from msy.

    • i bought a Avermedia Homefree duet a few months back. Recently, i got the cheap HP $150 pc deal from them. Fairly fast shipping. However, i haven't deal with them when an issue arises…

    • +1

Got the HP deal not too long ago, speedy delivery, fast response when I emailed them a question.

about $90 on staticice. without postage
$95 with postage = nothing special, sorry.

    • +10

You are lucky if u live near a major computer store… for me, even $5 postage is a good deal… some site..ahem..shopping square…ahem, wants to charge me $18 for postage!

    • +3

$90.38 is the cheapest unbundled price on Staticice, before shipping and CC surcharge, which I'm sure in total will come to more than the $4.57 difference. This is $95 delivered, no surcharge. Seems a pretty decent deal to me.

You might want to update the firmware of the drive.

      thanks for the heads-up!

    • Thanks - had two of these in my NAS from Dec last year and had no idea of the issue. Both now updated successfully.

Looks like a well laid out web site too … far better setup than most.

  • +1

So what is the 'best' drive or recommended drive for a 2TB around the $100 mark? Saves scrolling through hundreds of whirlpool pages. It will be only used to only occasionally access data (not all the time) and have an external enclosure around it. I intend on purchasing the enclosure separately.

Was going to get one of those Samsung Story USB3 drives that were on Shopping Square the other day (saves purchasing an enclosure too), but people seem to have had trouble with these.

So WD? Samsung? Seagate? And which models do you recommend? Thanks!

    • oops.
forgot to post as a reply
      look down a bit

    • Avoid Seagate green 5900rpm. I have 2 and their performance is shite.

I'd actually avoid green altogether if you want a fast drive - cheapest fast drive is Hitachi 7200rpm

  • I have the same HDD which I bought from Umart for $97 before christmas. but I had to ride my bike 10 minutes from work to get. :(

so with postage - great deal.

    • +1

I wish i could do that, riding the bike 10mins into a major store… get exercise and cheap parts at the same time:)

  • the Samsung Story USB3 is an external?
are you looking at getting an internal with an enclosure to use it as an external?
have a look at wd green (bought one of these a few weeks ago) or seagate barracuda green are both $100 from computer places near me (both 2tb) or the one in this deal. a green drive is better for most people if you only occasionaly use it for things like storage. theyre both 52000 rpm i think (some sites will say the wd is 72000 which isnt right) the seagate may be 56000 rpm.

    • +2

the Samsung Story USB3 is an external?

      yes

are you looking at getting an internal with an enclosure to use it as an external?

      basically yes

theyre both 52000 rpm i think (some sites will say the wd is 72000 which isnt right) the seagate may be 56000 rpm.

      divide numbers by 10

  • Sold out.

  • Good deal for these drives.

For the OP —> From one NAS owner to another: Make sure you google "4K sector alignment" and find out if it's going to impact the performance of your particular NAS, and stability of the RAID(s), before you install these F4 disks.

    • thanks… already got the latest firmware to deal with that!

  • -6

Hate Samsung, you will too after a few months of owning one of these.

    • -1

Regardless of your opinion, the price is decent.
      No need for negative.

  • -1

how does this stack up against WD's eco green drives?

    • -1

I prefer my Samsung drives over the others as I have had issues with WD and Seagate previously. Since changing to Samsungs, never had any issues.

I have 6 of these in a Fileserver. With just a simple disk to disk transfer, I get between 95-110mb/s depending on the media. These are running of 2 Dell SAS Cards, so not sure if that makes a difference.

    • -1

It's a bit faster than WD Green, but also a bit noiser and vibrates more.

  • Huh, it's $99 now.

  • +2

Price is up to $105 now.

  • +1

    Shame about the price hike!

  • +3

    Back to $94.95!
