Reinforcing Glass Shelves

Hi

I have a glass cabinet (https://metrodisplay.com.au/shop/display_cabinets/msc-242/) and would an idea of how i can reinforce the glass to hold heavier items.

Currently as stated, it holds 30kg and is supported by two studs on 4 corners. It is 8mm temperered glass. Its dimensions are approximately 970mm(w) x 460mm(d).

Im a collector of statues, and some statues are close to 20kg each (want to put two). Anyone know if I can reinforce the glass shelves?

Thanks

  • Maybe some aluminium angle across the base of the glass… Also depends if the glass has been conservatively rated - i.e. it might be 30kg but might have a 3x safety factor and would take up to 90kg before breaking. If it doesn't flex, and you've got two statues further to the edges and not centred, then you should be fine.

    • Thanks, do you know how to install angle if its glass on all 4 sides? (can easily screw in if its timber)

  • The studs are the weakest points, not the glass.
Your 8mm glass can hold 50-60kgs easy.

You can either install angle or silicone the shelf in from 3 sides.
Silicone option will be heaps stronger, but it wont be as easy to replace the shelf if it gets scratched or chipped.

      • With clear silicone. You can either use clear double sided tape to keep the angles in position (until silicone cures) or if you are afraid that you will see the tape through glass then you can rest the angles on something until the silicone cures.
But you have to make sure the angles dont move while the silicone cures, or you will get bubbles in silicone and you will see them from the outside of the glass.
        Hope that helps.
