AMD Ryzen 1700 vs 2400G

Hi all,

A few months ago I built a budget gaming PC for my wife using a Ryzen 2400G APU. I've since bought a discrete GPU from a friend, and added it to the machine.

Last night I was browsing Gumtree and came across someone nearby wanting to trade a Ryzen 1700 for a 2400G. He's upgraded his 1700, and now wants to build a media streamer, so the APU would be better suited to his needs.

My question is, will this offer enough of an upgrade to me to make it worthwhile?

The relevant specs of the PC I'd be putting it in are as follows:

Board: Asus A320M-K (So no overclocking unless I upgrade this)
RAM: 16GB Hyper-X 2933mhz
GPU: Sapphire RX480 GB

Any advice would be appreciated!

  • EDIT: WHOOPS

Yes go for it! Make sure you dont get a dud one.

    EDIT: Oh wait…

What about your needs? Why are you risking this sir, if you have no issues then why

    • I'm just putting it out there for context as to whether he seems genuine.

The PC is used as a general purpose workstation, with light gaming and my wife also uses it for photo editing.

Nothing too strenuous. There's nothing wrong with it as such, but I guess I'm trying to see if there's enough of an improvement from the upgrade to justify the hassle and slight risk.

  • the 1700 has 8 cores but is clocked by default @ 3G.
your 2400G is clocked @ 3.6G with only 4 cores.

If youre gaming, the apu will actually likely be better in most scenarios ( if you arent gpu bottlenecked ) , although only certain games will you see a noticeable difference I expect..

but if this is your daily pc - you may benefit from the extra cores of the 1700.

    50/50 really

Ryzen 1700 is much better according to this: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-7-1700-vs-AM…

If you've since bought a dGPU, the 1700 wins hands down.

  • Seeing your needs, absolutely. 8 cores should (to the best of my knowledge) be much better than the 4 the r5 has.

Albiet make sure you test it and make sure it isn't a dud. Seems like a bit of a weird trade, but trader might just want it for the iGPU.

  • Fk yes, Do it and OC to 3.8ghz (obtainable by majority of Ryzen 1700's)
Had mine for over a year at 3.8ghz and it's running perfectly.

    • OP'd have to upgrade their board.
