UK iPhone 6 Can't Be Unlocked from Vodafone (UK)

My brother in law visited from the UK recently, and left his iphone 6 here for my father in law to use. After factory resetting, we found it rejected the local sim and told us to get it unlocked from the original provider.

He has called Vodafone in the UK and they have told him that it's already unlocked. But no, phone still says it's locked.

They told him (to tell us) to take it to a local shop to get it unlocked.

Has anyone had any experience with this before? I don't want the shop to brick it, and it really sounds like Voda UK just haven't done a proper job?

Advice please.

  • have you installed the new ipsw via iTunes?

    • What's an ipsw? I did a full factory reset. it's been a while though (sitting on my desk the past few months).

      • ipsw is the "iOS"/software of the device.
        plug the phone into itunes.
it will ask you if you want install updated iOS.
do that and then restart phone and try the sim.

it used to be the case with iphones (last time I did this was 4 years ago, can't remember exactly) that you would contact the phone company and ask for it to be unlocked. they would do some magic at their end and then you would need to do an itunes update the new ipsw, and then phone would be unlocked.

        • Thanks. I think I ran factory reset without iTunes (just on the phone), will try it with iTunes this weekend. Does it matter whose apple account the iTunes is running on?

          • @schwinn: unsure sorry. shouldn't.

try it and see how you go.

as scooba says below as well

  • Have you followed the instructions from the apple site?

    • yeah my bro in law has done all that, called voda UK, which is what they said.

  • Not sure, but I think you can get the phone unlocked for free through vodaphone (Aus) if its for overseas (or you had it a certain amount of time). Probably worth checking out Voda website, they probably ask you for an imei to put in and they should (I hope) give you a way to unlock it?

    • Voda au does not have the ability to unlock voda uk phones.

      • +1

Oh you're right, I read it backwards, I thought OP brought the phone to the UK from Aus, not the other way around.

Restore the phone back to factory using iTunes. If the phone is actually unlocked like Vodaphone say it is, a message in should appear in iTunes after the phone has been restored saying "Congratulations, your iPhone has now been unlocked".

    • Thanks, I'll try this weekend with iTuenes. I think I previously tried it with just the phone standalone, not with iTunes. Will keep you all posted.
