$41.25/mth 12 Month SIM Only Plan Unlimited Calls + Text + 80GB Data + Optus Sport + Music/Video Streaming Free @ Optus » All Comments

Optus have been promoting their sim only plans heavily comparing to Telstra direct! Gotta love competition.

    • +3

If only Telstra were competitive. I'm stuck in an Optus dead zone and Telstra don't even seem to try to be competitive.

      • +1

Do you really need 80gb of data though telstra's 60gb plan is pretty good

        • +1

If you are a new service it's mildly competitive with Optus, if you are not then it doesn't even compare. No love for loyalty.

I also don't like Telstra's "Bonus" data stuff they do instead of just upgrading their offerings.

          • @static: Telstra's systems are absolute dogshit, so it is easier for them to add a bonus add on of data then it is to refresh the plan itself. They really need to update their syetems to something more robust.

    • Awesome value!
My friend & her partner signed up on sales chat. They share the data between them. Works pretty well for them.

  • (profanity) i signed the same plan last month for $49.5 now they give me this?
currently it isn't direct debt aka i have to pay manually. is it possible not to pay and have they terminate my service while i enroll into a new one?

    • +3

Not possible; you will pick up a default on your credit history by doing so.

    • argh.. me too!

  • +4

$31.5/month for 30GB data. Well worth it as you Optus sports too

    • For another $10 a month you get 50GB extra which makes it a pretty good deal.

      • +5

Yes, if you are going to use the extra data, else it's $120 extra.

    • Is this deal still active?

    • +2

I rang up said im moving to telstra, so they gave me 10GB of extra data on the 30gb plan so a total of 40gb for 31.50 a month.

    • do you have link to that deal please?

  • Is this stackable with anything?
EDIT: "Not available with other discounts" - but still potentially any cashbacks or something?

  • +1

    tempted to cancel nbn

    • +2

You're better off getting the 200gb data sim plan for $60pm ($50 if you have another service with optus) https://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/mobile-broadband/dat…

      • Where do you see the $10 off? I've asked a few reps and they all said the offer expired…

        • Yes, that offer has expired. Instead now you can cancel the mobile broadband plan with out any exit fees.

    • +1

did that myself. signed up for 200gb for $60 for 24 months. Sold the tablet they gave me. got it down to basically $25 a month. Then, I signed up to this deal. I have to say it's not as fast as NBN tho…not in my area at least. you better test it out with a prepaid sim before you jump on it.

      • Hi thinking of doing this myself - which tablet did you sell, and what did you get for it? Cheers

        • +1

I got the Samsung galaxy tab S4. People are selling it on eBay but I couldn’t be bothered dealing with people there, I went with this website called webuyback. Quick and easy. Got $620 for that tablet…made the plan essentially about $25 a month for 24 months. (I have got $10 discount per month as well since I’m already a customer…it’s only $50 per month for me normally)

  • Hmmmm decisions…I currently have a 30GB plan for $35pm.

    • Do you use more than 30gb per month?

      • and if you don't, would your usage change? Would it be a useful $62 a year for the extra 50gb p/m?
I'm in the same boat but am considering it because I would hotspot & stream a lot more while I'm away. But currently use 10-15gb a month.

  • +1

    ooof

  • Wow, how does the sharing data work?

    • +1

I'm guessing if you have multiple phone services on the same account (kids or family or something), then you would get it across all services.

      • +1

Oh wow that makes this an even more incredible deal. Glad I didn't jump on the P20 Pro telstra deal!

        • I'm not 100% certain though - so definitely research! But fairly sure.

        • +3

I just went in store to sign up for 2 accounts. In store they have $15 addon accounts with 3GB data, so instead of 2 x $41.25 with more data than I need, I got 1 x 80GB and 2 extra accounts with 3GB each (my daughter is at the age where she's just about to get a phone). So my total is 86GB shared by 3 lines for $71.25/month.

          • @tmonkey: Oh wow that is actually pretty incredible. Thank you for letting us know, was looking at getting something very similar with my family. That works out to be around 24 per person. Really good!

          • +1

@tmonkey: Do these "Add On" accounts include calls? I'm assuming they gave you the $25 plan on their website with a $10 discount? Can you confirm?

            • @stirlo: Yes, calls and texts, but international calls were a $10 add on (they're included in the $41.25 account)

              • @tmonkey: Awesome, I’m going to grab that deal ASAP :)

    • +5

If you have multiple service with Optus under the same account name you can share your data.
Eg if one service has 80gb and the other 20gb you share 100gb between both.

    • +5

Essentially pools all accounts you link in your primary account.

Wife and I have our sim plans linked and all data is shared between us.

The app also gives a more detailed breakdown of use if required.

  • my s8 plus plan with woolworths ends in APril and im paying $69 a month for 4gb data. tempted to cancel it and get this but its only 4 months away but i dont know what plans are available in 4 months time

    • It's a tricky one. There could be even lower price drops going down in a few months, or maybe they are trying to capture all the people shifting over from the closure of Virgin.
      Hard to know.

    • Same - Woolworths is crap.

  • oh, 9 months ago I signed contract with $40 just for 30G. This is incredible deal. Will want to see better deal next year after my current contract expire.

    • I was in the same situation and just upgraded to this one, hassle free, no extra cost.
not sure how often they run such good promos, I'd rather take this one up, extra 50GB for $1.25 per month… no brainer :)

  • What’s 1.5mbps like on video streaming?
Is that standard definition ie pixel galore?

    • -3

Yes, should be around 480p but shouldn't be a big deal for most imo

      • Do you have to set this up on Netflix/Stan?

Will the services try to pull 720p+

        • Netflix seems to fix itself accordingly depending on the speed you have(not sure if they've changed this recently, been a while since I tried to change it). Stan you can choose what resolution you prefer in the app- did this recently when getting a new 4K tv.

    • The netflix app on our 65" tcl tv reports 720 at about .9mbps. Looks fine to me. Plenty of detail eg individual eyelashes etc easily picked up. Still some blocking in some shadowy scenes though.

  • YouTube?

  • Damn expires soon and my plan expires next month.

I checked in store but they won’t waive it the last month and I’m thinking about just paying it out to take advantage of these sim only plans. I just don’t know if there will be any deals in January.

    • Ask online chat, never had an issue getting last few months waived before. If it's a handset plan you may have to pay the last little bit of handset, but otherwise it should be free.

Other method I use is to simply put the request to change plans in (following usual sign up process but saying I'm an existing customer wanting to upgrade). I've only once had an issue where they called because I had 7/12 months less still, but even then they didn't overly care and waived the fee. Again though, this may still have the last handset payment portion of you're on a plan with a device.

  • Possible to tether and use the 80gb without worries?
iPad wifi only is what I would use to tether from my iPhone.

    • Optus has 10 dollar surcharge for 1 GB over your monthly data limit

    • +3

      [Tether] phone is fine

    • i have tried this before because the hotspot on my HTC is considerably faster than i was able to get with a 4G Modem (i bought one of the Kogan ones which take a sim card). However the phone shuts down the hotspot after a certain amount of inactivity, so it was pretty frustrating

      • You should be able to disable that in Android.

  • -6

Is good deal if you can deal with their crap network in melbourne suburbs

  • Would a ten percent student discount apply to this?

    • +1

no. it says cannot be combined with other offers. :( would be even nicer if i could get that. haha

      • I know right, how awesome would that have been!! 😂

        • +1

!!! Call them and ask I got 10% student discount off the click frenzy deal, the sales people can add it for you

          • @DracoManX69: Oh dude are you serious!! That's awesome, thanks for this, I was actually going to go over to Optus tomorrow, I think I'll just call them now! Thanks!

            • @Zylam Marex: Did you get the student discount?

              • @happybun: I asked them in store, they told me I have to call up Optus as they can't do it in store. I actually just got this plan two days ago, was waiting for everything to get set up before I give them a call.

    • It's a no. If you buy online, there's no way you can apply the promo code to this plan. I've tried talking to 3 different chat persons but they all have the standard answer: NOT FOR THIS PLAN. You can use the student promo code for the 35$ plan to bring it down to 31.5 though. So sad.

  • Nice! I thought the deal I signed up months ago at $52pm for 80GB was a bargain. This is definitely a much better offer.

  • Thanks OP, I was about to sign yesterday on the lesser deal but have a few weeks left on current Jennee sim.

    • oh god, same! i'm so glad i didn't. haha

  • +2

Just noting my experience for existing optus users. Ensure you check your next bill, they may conveniently leave the "discount" out. Thier sales and billing team are appalling to deal with. Took 3 hours to prove that ive been getting a discount for 13 months on my current 24mth plan.

  • Has anyone tried to talk to Vodafone about this Optus deal?

    • I've tried in the past and they aren't too keen on price matching

    • Tried doing it yesterday as my current plan expires in about a month. They offered me an additional 5GB data on the $45 plan which is currently discounted at $40. I have 3 services with vodafone so when I re-contract into a sim only plan I get 10% off plan fees on each of the plans, which technically will bring this plan to $36 and I think I will be sticking with Vodafone

      • They offered me $38.20 for their $45 plan $40 at the moment), I don't know how they calculate to that number. But I still declined as I was paying $36 on my student plan with 10% discount

    • I got it matched. Was out of contract and told them I was porting over, they matched it in 5min.

  • Any way of getting this on two sims? Not really keen on paying $15/month for an extra sim.

    • +1

There's a grandfathered $5 once off for a second sim plan, second sim only has access to the data. Optus stores can still get you on it, but rarely have a clue it exists and are often cautious about allowing you access to it. They still do have the magic button to press though.

If you need calls on two sims, no.

      • Any clue which stores?
Not really sure how I'll approach it but I'll go and ask every store I see

        • +1

It's very rare to find one anymore, more is if you know someone who works there that can accidentally get you a SIM on that plan. It's basically just a plan that costs $5 outright and $0/mo which includes 1 sim and no data/calls.

          • @[Deactivated]: In that case I might as well start working at Optus accidentally. Nonetheless thank you a lot :)

  • +2

Being able to pool data is brilliant

I currently have a 200gb data sim plan and a 30gb postpaid mobile plan. Have an existing Kogan 365 plan which expires in Feb but I reckon I'll sign up to this 80gb plan

At this rate I'll be buying an Optus t-shirt for both my missus and future kids to show our allegiance

  • I would warm anyone away from signing up with Optus. I’ve been with them for 3 months and had to contact them about 5 times. Their customer service is hideous and I can’t wait for my contract to end so I can go elsewhere.

    • +1

      Also check my expeirence below.
I would say Optus is happily overselling their network load , printing money , very greedy and not care about their customers at all.

There's heavy network congestion time to time, especially evening peak time or holidays like the time during Christmas.
Their usual network speed is about a thirds to half of Telstra, and when there's network congestion, it will be too slow to open any webpage.

Of course it is highly depending on where you live, I live at 4116.
The network is not able to open a webpage for 6 days during the last 12 months, and 2 of the days were on 24th and 25th Dec 2017.
No problem on making calls or text.

If you had experience with Optus network at your location then you will know.
Or maybe try on the prepaid card to test, before hoping on to a 12 month or 24 months plan.

I made complaints twice, via written letter to Optus customer team.
And the reply is I should call the Optus tech and issue team when the problem is happening, not making complaints to them because
      they can't do anything.

      • As per their new ad, you should be able to exit without any fees (due to bad network). Good luck.

        • Where have you seen this? I’d happily make up as many issues as possible to get away from them.

          • @ldt: Search for Optus walk away ad.

            • @avendr: Just found it. Says “24 month contracts only”.

      • -1

        Band 28?

  • How does the data pooling work, I have a tablet with 4G slot, can I just get a SIM or do I need to get a plan for that device too?

    • I read the tablet would need a sim and its own plan first.

But maybe the eSIM idea is working now?

    • Neg if wrong, but I believe you can get a new data SIM that shares its data.

  • Good price.

Please also be aware there's network congestion time to time, especially evening peak time or holidays like the time during Christmas.

  • I'd vote for Telstra's 60GB plan.
Though Telstra's recent customer service has gone worse, one call waited for 25 mintues and another call waited for 41 mintues before you can talk to someone.

Optus has nearly no waiting time.
I guess since Optus has good sales on those deals,
they've expanded their customer service team recently.

  • Once upon a time, Optus would happily recontract you to the new offer with no problems. Now? They want to charge the cancellation fees. Makes you feel dirty for paying $44 for 50GB of data.

    To quote online chat:

"Since you are under contract if you upgrade now to $41.25 with 80 GB data, you will need to pay the cancellation charges.
If you upgrade to phone and plan, there will not be any cancellation charges for you."

  • I have just signed up for this plan via chat after recontracting a week ago for 10% off on the $45 plan. My advice is to keep trying, it took me 3 tries. If you are going from a lower plan ie. $45 (or from a lower plan) to a higher plan $55, it should work according to the terms and conditions of the offer

  • I'm pretty sure if you change to a higher priced plan there's no fees
I'm paying $36 for 30gb going to try change to this tommorow, extra 50 gb for $6 . I use it in a 4 g modem for the household to use and if one of the kids needs a phone for an occasion then the Sim can be put in a spare phone

  • The problem is that because it's a new plan, they don't really know the T&C's of the plan yet which is what I have found many times in the past. It is an upgrade if you're going to a higher plan and it costs more, 75c more in my case $45(40.50 Inc 10% discount) to $55($41.25 Inc 25% discount), it's a higher plan and it costs more.

    • Just read the critical information summary for this discounted $55 plan, it says no early exit fees if new plan costs more

  • +3

My friend has this plan and he loves it. He lives in a flat by himself and 80GB is plenty for him, he also takes advantage of the free video streaming I can't remember which one. But for people who either live alone, in a share house or traveling around the country, this plan is ideal. All of your internet/telecommunications in one package, hotspot to your laptop or even TV and get speeds faster than the base NBN packages, particularly upload speeds!!

    • You got it! Such a good deal with the included streaming services and international calls!

  • The Telstra plan is sharable data as far as I know… Just FYI - I don't think the Optus advertising is right.

    • No Telstra don't allow data sharing anymore :(

  • Feel a bit silly asking but can't see where it says, is this 4g?
Currently using jennee/optus but with 3g and the upgrade to 4g would be great.

  • It would appear that Amaysim have lost their advantage. I'm quite shy about 12 month contracts, but this seems to be a cracker of a deal. Using amaysim plans to compare, the extras on this are untouchable. I have broadband with Optus on a rolling contract so this will give me a $10 credit on that as well.

    • You might want to double check on that.

I have wireless broadband and currently getting $10 off per month on mobile plan.

However on chat, the rep said "no further discount" if I upgrade to this plan.

      • Yea, you're right, they said no further discount! Sad!

  • +4

Hey everyone, I got a couple of friends that work at Optus and they gave me some insight.

-data sharing only works if your other services are on the same Account number. Not just simply the same name on the account.
-if you have just recently signed up to a new sim only plan, you may still be able to jump aboard to current in market plans, however this means you still be starting a new contract. If you call Optus customer service they should waiver the upgrade fee as you are renewing your contract. I believe this is all dependent on how long you have had your current sim only plan for.
-Optus's last best deals were around this time last year, so I'm unsure if we can expect to see any better deals before Christmas. Usually what prompts these deals happening is competition from other telecos , i.e Telstra's $50pm sim only.

    Hope that helps

    • Did they say what the actual conditions might be for waiving the early upgrade fee? Just curious

  • Did anyone else get the following message after ordering this?

“OPTUSMSG:Hi, thanks for adding Music Streaming, Optus Sport (Mobile), 25% Discount for 24 months, Disc Mobile TV streaming, UL Intl Talk & Text(35 countries) and $5 Mobile TV Streaming to your Optus Service. Your order reference number is: xxxx. For more information visit http://yesopt.us/chat2us”

It says $5 mobile TV…I thought it’s free for 12 months?

EDIT: oops, never mind…it says disc mobile tv streaming on that text as well. and confirmed with an optus rep. that it is indeed free for 12 months.

  • I am on optus prepaid..can i sign up for this plan?

    • +1

      anytime you want

    • +1

yes you can. it's not just for new customers. it's for everyone.

  • I cannot upgrade from the $35 for 30 GB contract to the 41.25 for 80 GB unless I pay cancellation fee…I spoke to an online rep..he said the cancellation fee is around 175

Might have to wait till next year to get a decent offer

    • +3

Someone suggested calling them instead. Give it a go. I found online people really hard to deal with, especially the sales department. Not sure who you spoke to, but chat with billing/general inquiries and ask them to do it for you instead. They can do upgrades in billing, just keep insisting not to be transferred to sales as you need to get the cancellation fee waived as well. When I signed up for mine, they told me if I wanted to upgrade later, I wouldn't need to pay the cancellation fee for upgrade. They probably told you the same. This plan would be an upgrade for you since it's a $55 plan essentially.

      • Thanks will give it a go

      • Just spoke with a rep..they said the same thing $175 payout fee and would only waive the fee if it was for a phone plan not sim only plan

        • Just keep at it, @Kenna

      • +1

Your advice is worth gold :)
I signed up to the 10% off $45 less than 2 months ago.
I got the $55-25% on the 3rd time with a call to billing/general enquiries after initially getting declined online with chat, then declined by sales on the phone.
        No early termination fees :)

    • hmm weird. I was on a 40 dollar 25gb plan and they let the cancellation fee slide. Might depend on which service person you get

  • Amazing deal! Upgraded from 25gb for 40$ to 80gb for 41.25

  • can anyone please confirm that if i'm on a new $45 plan ($40.50 promo) but now want to go to a higher plan $55 plan ($41.25 promo) that there's no fee since it's upgrading within the same family rate plan?
Can this just be done via the online website or does it have to be done over the phone/chat?
    TIA

    • I can confirm I was successful upgrading from 50GB $45-10% promo. I joined that at end of October. But, I'm not familiar with this Family Rate Plan you mention…

I'm kind of repeating what I wrote previously, but I was initially was going to be charged $225 early termination fee when I contacted Optus via chat and a call where I ended up talking to a sales lad (the sales rep mentioned I had to be minimum over 6 months into contract before free upgrade, which was totally random thinking now…)
I was successful by calling 133937 and selecting options till I got to Billing/General enquiries. From there it was a total change of attitude from Optus. I didn't even have to argue my case. I just stated clearly what I was hoping for, and received.
      Best of luck.

  • I think you can, just keep trying via chat, depends on the agent. Chat is considered online.
I did it after upgrading while still in contract on the same plan as you, a week after signing into that new contract. Phone sales will not help you at all.

    • Thanks for the reply.
So if i just went upgrade via the link i'll get charged the cancellation fee?

I just thought that since i'm on the My Promo Plus 12M SIM (Oct 18) $45 plan ID 801072/10962355 and "UPGRADING" to a higher plan within the family plan rate to My Promo Plus 12M SIM (Oct 18) $55 plan ID 801073/10962365, then there shouldn't be an penalty.

Just want to check if anyone in the same current plan as me and did the upgrade via the link.
Just trying to avoid a battle with the online/chat team if possible.

      • +1

You won't be able to upgrade via the link, I tried. You are right, it is a plan upgrade, let them know. Keep contacting chat, you just need to get the right person on chat and they will do it for you like they did for me. Grease, Grease, Grease and good luck!

  • Does it show as 41.25 on anyones service plan or on my optus? or it will only show up on the bill?

  • +1

I was on a current $35.00 sim only plan with 10% discount that I only just signed up for a week ago.I posted last night on yes crowd after some info about upgrading to the $55.00 plan with 25% discount ($41.25)as I to had been told you can’t upgrade to this plan without incurring a termination fee.An Optus moderator got me to private message him and he processed the plan change from the 35 plan to the 55 plan immediately,it kicked in today.Provided you move upward in the same plan family there will be no fees.

    • I was just able to add a $25.00 12 month sim only plan to this current deal, also got a 10 dollar discount for second service. So all up $56.25 a month for 2 services sharing 113gb of data

  • +2

Great deal. Offer extended to 13/01/2019.

    • What is the download speed from ootus tower?

      • depends.

Heaps of factors come into play. Doesn't matter which network your with.

  • Does anyone know how to port a number to this online offer? Will I get the option when i receive the package?
Edit: its part of the checkout, pretty easy, i missed the checkbox on first look.

  • Did the online chat, he did it for me right away, no issues at all, no fees, nothing!

  • I am on a legacy Optus plan with a country not included on the new list. Hmmm

  • +1

After 12months does it go back to $55?

    • yep.

I think when you go thru the purchase process it gives you a screen with this info.

But hey….in 12 months time who's to say the offers aren't going to be better?

      • Thanks for that…
Lol you sound like the sales rep last time I signed up

    • +3

The discount actually continues on for another 12 months if you dont change your plan.

When I signed up - my email said "We're just confirming that you've added 25% discount for 24 months"

I was like huh 24months? So I asked the Chat while I was still on and asked about it and this is their reply. "If you didn't change the plan after 12months the discount will continue for next 12 months"

      • +3

Thanks, I got it confirmed too, at least it gives me some time in 12 months to shop around :)

  • I have redirected all my home Sonos traffic to Optus 4G modem to take advantage of their spotify data-free policy.
    So far so good!

    • So you're not using this in a phone, you're using it in a wireless 4g modem?

  • Updated plans for both mine and the wife with no dramas over chat. Mine was expiring in 2months and hers in a couple of days.

  • Thanks OP, and thanks to the commenters suggesting a phone call to waive the cancellation fee.

I was told on the phone that I'd have to pay the cancellation fee, having only contracted on the $35 plan on October. I said that I did not want to pay a cancellation fee, and had been told that I could upgrade, as long as I paid no more money. I said that if they didn't upgrade me and get more money from me each month, I'd just stay on the cheaper plan. I was polite but firm in my request. They put me on hold, then came back and did the upgrade for me.

Now, to figure out what on earth to do with an 80GB plan, when I was only using about 10GB before! ;)

  • This would be perfect, but I'm moving to America in the next 2 months :(

  • +1

    Offer now ends on 03/02/2019…

    • Lol they just keep with the marketing. It is a good deal. Two months now. Started this plan yesterday. So far so good.

  • Just signed up. Was on a 20gb/$36 plan that I signed up for in March 2018, they let me move onto this plan without any ETF fees (and so they should given i am nearly out of contract).
