Introduction by Dr. Weinberger
Music provides a powerful means of mental and physical development. Research has revealed that babies are born with the abilities to hear, organize and understand many aspects of music. Babies' capacity to recognize, invent and play with music increases as they develop through childhood. Music is natural to children and should be used as an important part of their experiences during development.

Parents can best promote children's natural interest in music by playing music that is developmentally appropriate for various stages of childhood. To encourage more attention to the music, play together with music. It not only provides beneficial stimulation, but also important bonding time for you and your child.

Dr. Weinberger is the father of seven children and an authority on music's role in child development. He is a Professor in the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior, University of California Irvine and founding member of the Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory. Dr. Weinberger received his B.A., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in psychology from Western Reserve University and postdoctoral training at the Brain Research Institute at UCLA. He is a pioneer in the field of how sounds are learned and remembered in the auditory system of the brain.

Jimmie Haskell, music arranger and producer, has won three GRAMMY® awards as best arranger. In his impressive career, he has composed music for 31 feature films, 32 TV movies and 445 TV episodes. Visit his website www.jimmiehaskell.com to find out more about him.

2 Free Mozart albums for baby, increase their IQ

Pretty sure this is to be false

and also, (serious q) why mozart? why not chopin, beethoven, hyde, etc

      • +6

        ~i gave a +

but it is proven to be false though(i think)

        • +1

          I think is false.

Lets assume the statment is correct. If I gave the music to some babies that have very low IQs, they are gonna improve and become normal people. Hm, why hasn't BMJ published such research results?

        • +3

+1 issh for showing the maturity to not retaliate in kind. You're a good egg mate.

andy2: firstly, thanks for the freebie. It's a good one, I reckon, big +1 from me. Secondly, this is a forum where we discuss facts, opinions, research and findings behind products and services, not just the price. I think it makes it more interesting and hopefully makes makes us more educated buyers.

Nobody complained, issh just questioned the validity of the 'IQ' claim, without prejudice. Try to catch that kneejerk reaction that says anyone disagreeing with you is personally attacking you or your worth. Be solid in yourself son, you'll be a better man for it.

      • +4

He's not complaining. Just simply asking a question you clearly don't have an answer for.

        • -7

          just google it

    • +8

Not to start WW3 but issh is right - the reference in title to increased IQ's is false.

Refer to the Mozart Effect: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozart_effect

Very interesting reading in terms of how statements, mis-quotes, 'light hearted articles' and politicians combine to start a very persistent rumour.

To cut long story short, note the reply given by Rauscher (one of the original researchers):

"Our results on the effects of listening to Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major K. 448 on spatial–temporal task performance have generated much interest but several misconceptions, many of which are reflected in attempts to replicate the research. The comments by Chabris and Steele et al. echo the most common of these: that listening to Mozart enhances intelligence. We made no such claim. The effect is limited to spatial–temporal tasks involving mental imagery and temporal ordering."

There is also a separate reference somewhere that the effect is temporary only (limited to 15min) but please read the full wiki page for more info.

BUT (before I get negged to oblivion) +1 to OP for identifying great freebie. I've downloaded and voted.

Thanks for the link. Very interesting reading.

  • Thank you. Thats a lovely download for kids. Sharon

160kbps. Not bad… not good, but not bad either. Great for free.

  • Pretty cool… but how come the songs are quite short…

I have baby Einstein cds in Mozart and Beethoven and while the baby IQ aspect hasn't been proven, listening to it certainly makes me happier and more relaxed so can only be a good thing for bub. Plus babies can recognise music played to them in utero and helps them calm down after birth. Better classical than top 40 I think.

    A plus from me!

    • +2

I guess the Child would hate you for the rest of it's life if you made it listen to Rebecca Black..and hate fridays as well !

  • I think Penn and Teller's Bullshit covered this. Marketed stuff for babies like this don't work. But 2 free albums. That's a +ve

  • I thought most classical music was royalty free?

    • Alot of the songs are, but not always the recordings by specific orchestras.

  • You ripper!

  • Last time I checked, the idea that playing such music for very young infants would - by itself - raise the child's IQ has been reported NOT to have any scientific basis.

I embrace the free (as in beer) release of the 2 "albums" here, but don't think the "Increase Their IQ" (in this Bargain's title) is justified here.

I say: why "promote" a falsehood, because of a free music download…?

BTW, the cited web page DOESN'T mention any increase of IQ (instead suggesting that it could, eg, foster "bonding" with a parent), so maybe doing so (eg, in this OzBargain) could be interpretted as "libelous" by some…?

Maybe remove just the bit about IQ from the title, eh? :-)

    TIA

PS It's a fairly quick download, but I don't know if it's the finest music that's ever been recorded or even the finest quality recording(s)… :-)

    • Why neg the deal because of the poster's phraseology in the title?

      • +2

Looks like the title has been changed now anyway so perhaps IVI might reconsider the neg

  • +2

IQ or not as long as we sooth the baby with these song is good enough. Plus it's free what we can ask for.

    Thanks for the link, poster.

  • Nice soothing songs for sleepytime, makes a change from me singing the same song over or the white noise generator
    thanks poster

  • Bullcrap about IQ boost, but for soothing background music my baby girl thanks you :). plus vote!

  • you are a champ, thanks for the free stuffs.
and that is all i care.

  • +1 for the music download. My little girl loves this music.
