Good one but unfortunately it does not have touch

    • +53

And that's a bad thing? I have a metal ruler on my desk for people that want to touch my laptop screen.

    • +1

Touch screen on laptop is useless. Don’t waste money for it

      • +6

Until you use a laptop with touch. Absolutely love the touch on my XPS 15. I don't use it everyday, it's handy when browsing certain things and for certain applications like photoshop.

        • +1

I had one mate, but never use it. Using laptop by mouse and short cut in keyboard is the fastest way. Touch screen is the best for tablet and phone, but not for laptop. The interface of windows/mac and most of applications is optimised for mouse and keyboard, not for the touch screen

            @n2h:

The interface of windows/mac and most of applications is optimised for mouse and keyboard, not for the touch screen

Not anymore. Most of the applications these days are optimised for touch as well due to the invention of Microsoft Surface devices including the windows control panel.

        • Got the XPS 13" with touch. Would rather have had it without, but the touch display was (aside from the touch) better, so went with it anyway. The touch itself is useless to me, but the display is very nice.

I have touch on my laptop and never use it.

    • While I disagree on the comment above saying

touch is useless, don't waste money on it

At the same time I think in a laptop this powerful a touch screen isn't needed.
And a touchscreen does increase the price.

    • touch is useless on a laptop

    • +1

Prefer non-touch actually; the extra layer for touch probably affects crispness.

    • I have an 15 7000 Dell Inspiron with touch screen, the only time I ever used the touch screen was when i was on a plane and I folded the laptop into tablet mode due to the confined space of a seat on a budget flight, other than this I've never needed it, it was a waste of money paying extra for the touch screen model!!

Is it true the batteries on these aren't great?

    • +1

Not as large as the XPS 13, still twice the RAM and SSD. Unless battery is really critical, this seems to be better deal.

  • +1

EBay store has it listed for $1,599 but with the PLUGIT20 code it brings it down to $1,279.20

  • If only this had Thunderbolt 3..

    • Besides external GPU, what else do you need TB3 for daily?

      • Docking, with multiple monitors? Although, I don't know if this laptop has some other docking facilities

With a single monitor, you can get away with a plain USB3 dock I think. Or just manually plug in a HDMI cable for (one) extra monitor.

        • +1

This unit can use USB-C and HDMI to output video simultaneously. May be docking is only good for those who need 3+ external monitors?

      • Have an android phone and most of the time on the go travelling, so charging using T3 is very handy.

Code EPP80 takes this down to $1298.99 instead.

  • +1

    I have a slightly better code: EPP80.

    • Thanks buddy. updated the code.. hope there are no other hidden codes :D

      • Depends what you're buying and how much they cost. I have to be careful about sharing because they come from my employer and aren't meant for everyone. I'm also worried they might cancel the codes including my orders.

  • How come the 7570 is cheaper?
Sure, less ram but also bigger screen and has discrete GPU.

I've noticed sometimes the more popular size will have less discounts. Like the 14" is hardly ever discounted.

  • Does the Inspiron have support for the Bluetooth Aptx codec? Lots of people are buying bluetooth noise cancelling headsets, but for wireless you you need Aptx to get superior CD equivalent quality.

    • +2

No you don't. Aptx is mostly for latency. It's quite old.

  • I was looking at getting HP spectre or Dell xps but this deal seems very good. any reason I should buy one of the others over this? don't need it for gaming. thanks

    • +1

Spectre and xps are premium laptops, this one is a upper end consumer laptop but amazing value for what you’re getting. The equivalent xps13 would retail close to 3k

    • I’m in EXACTLY the same boat!

      • let me know which one you go for! spectre looks the best aesthetically but these Dell deals are super tempting. not liking the negative comments about the fans. I'm sure that would become annoying

        • +1

Just went to JB Hi Fi to play with all the keyboards. I think I might bite the bullet and get the XPS 13, but ideally with 16GB ram. The speaker grill for the new Spectres look really weird

    • See my comment below. This has nice build quality, but that's all I like about it.

Dell needs to sort out their fans. They are so irritating

      • what did you end up getting instead and are you happy with it? your comments are making me think I should go for the spectre

        • Got a full refund, yet to get anything. Thinking Surface Book 2 or Surface Laptop.

Wife has a HP X360 and it seems excellent.

All of those mentioned above are significantly more than this, however. If you think you can live with fan noise and get the same specs, go for it.

I use a 2018 MBP for work, and whilst macOS sucks for productivity, it is such a brilliant laptop. It is completely silent.

    • The xps 13 is currently also on sale.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/428100

It is less ram and SSD though…

  • +1

Bought this last time and promptly returned it. It exhibits the same annoying issue as my work issued Dell Precision.

The fans will come on when it is barely being tested and they are loud.

    • +1

This appears to be a common gripe, along with poor battery life.

    • Inspiron is cheap, but even Precision does that?

  • Real noob question:

Can someone please tell me if I can connect multiple screens to this ? Will this work with any docking stations ?

    TIA

    • 60 fps with support for an external 4K UHD display

  • anyway to add cashrewards? Dell Australia have 7% , ignore found it

  • I am an IT pro that can type approx 70WPM and I'm a keyboard shortcut addict… Touch is AWESOME - including on Laptops. Hand your notebook to a customer/friend or move it into 'tablet' mode and you Zoomy, scrolly, feely happy! You don't have to use it all the time, but if you haven't been using it, give it a go. If you still don't like it, than an SSD is USELESS for you in a LAPTOP. YES YOU! :P

    • Hmm 70wpm is not overly fast. I think if you go to more faster speeds typing would be faster and depending how good your keyboard shortcut skills are. I would say tablet mode has its place though when certain items of that nature are needed.

  • How is the graphics card on this one?

    Is it upgradable?

  • The touch screen may be useless, but 3K or 4K (on XPS 15) resolution is more stunning than FHD.

  • Hi, just wondering what people would prefer between the Dell and the following?

    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/ideapad/ideapad500/Idea…

There is 14% shopback for the Lenovo as well.

Leaning towards the Lenovo because of the 14 inch screen.

  • Abit confused where the product lines sit but my work inspiron 5490 tends to give 6 or more hrs of laptop battery out which is great on visits out to other sites for work.

With this latitude range per the listing is this a consumer line vs xps and inspiron? And so standard 2 or 3hrs etc. Battery life??

I dont necessarilly need a hardcore gaming machine so a mix of functionality (medium sized screen - typically used 15.6"desktop replacement laptop but thinking 13 or 14" for occasional travel or portability) chunky hardware specs (i.e. higher ram, storage space and speed), decent battery, good ports and connections (some ultra thin ones have like one usb port which is a no go for me).

Any suggestions? Have up to 2k to spend for my bday gift.
