    Great price.

If you're new to photography, this lens is what I recommend to everyone who buys a Nikon DSLR.

It gets you into some great habits (being a prime), but also gives outstanding bang for buck. This lens gives results far above its price range, and it's probably the cheapest lens you'll ever buy.

    • I purchased a Nikon D3400 about 2 years ago, along with the 35mm prime lens. Only have recently been using it (been way too busy unfortunately). Was wondering if its worth getting the 50mm too.

Also eyeing off the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR lens but its about ~$1,500 on Camera Pro.

Really pricey but have been looking to do some landscape shots and I'm not sure if the D3400 would be good enough for such an awesome lens…

The Nikon 35mm f1.8 is going to do a lot of the same things for you that the 50mm would.

Given the choice, I'd take the 50mm (especially on a crop sensor model like your D3400), as it's a bit of a nicer width for portraits. The other plus to the 50mm (imo) is that it's also FX compatible - if you ever go to a full frame body, the 50mm will work just fine. The 35mm has some dark corners on FX, depending where you focus.

Is it worth you changing your 35 to a 50? That's really your call. The 35mm will teach you good habits with framing, and can give you some great results. But I think the 50mm is a bit more versatile, and I prefer that focal length for a lot of applications.

      • WRT the Nikkor 16-35 f/4G ED VR. Lovely lens! It sure isn't cheap, but glass gets noticeably better as you go up in price. Don't underestimate the sensor in your D3400 - that lens would still be a big improvement for a lot of things.

Rule of thumb, though - if you can get away with a prime instead of a zoom, you'll generally get better IQ for less $$. For landscapes, there are also some good cheaper prime options (e.g. Rokinon) which are worth considering, particularly if you don't need VR or AF. e.g. https://www.rokinon.com/lenses/digital-photo-lenses/24mm-f14

      • If I were you, get a 85/1.8g or 70-200/2.8 for portraits, and 15-30/2.8VC or 16-35 for landscape. And you’ll need an AF-S body as well, probably a D810 or secondhand D600 depending on your budget. Wow, that’s a few thousands! Grab a phone and sell all of your equipment!

  • Just out of curiosity how is this lens any different to the canon one that was $99 yesterday, apart from camera compatibility? Asking as I still have not purchased a camera and want to understand pricing of lenses before I commit to either Canon or Nikon.

Cannot comment on the lens vs lens situation, but from recent research, Canon does a lot better with regards to video on their DSLR's, if you wanted to take some videos. Otherwise Nikon are great for pictures, but have fairly poor quality video. This is from what I've noticed anyway, maybe someone could correct me, but I think that's the case.

    • In recent years, Sony should be counted in as well.
(In future, both N and C will move to new adaptors. So the mentioned lenses will get cheaper. )

  • Right, thank you for your input. I did see that written somewhere else as well. If Canon pictures are on par with Nikon, then I guess I would definitely go Canon if it offered better video..

  • Can we price match at jb in victoria?
