What Is The Best Ultrawide Gaming Monitor for 2019???

I've been eyeing off the Acer Predator X34P and its cousin the Alienware AW3418DW for some time now. I'm keeping an eye on CES to see what comes out, and the new LG 38GL950G looks very promising, but will probably be prohibitively expensive. Here's a review - apparently its not due to hit shelves til Q3 or Q4 2019 :(

Just wondering if there is anything better, or more suitable, and with the surprise news that NVIDIA is opening up G-Sync support for some Free Sync monitors, does this unveil any other Free sync monitors that would be suitable?

Would the LG 38GL950G with its WQHD+ resolution be too much for my 1080ti to push and maintain good frame rates or is it a good match? Currently playing PUBG and BFV.

Is there anything better than the Alienware AW3418DW available now for under $2000?
Are there any other monitors better than the alienware, similar to the LG, that is due to come out soon that I should keep an eye out for?

Appreciate any advice or suggestions.

The AW3418DW WAS the best ultrawide for a while, and was even ~$1450 around Christmas, we're in the middle of CES2019 atm and computer stuff is at Computex, which is held on MAY28 - JUN1.

    May see some new stuff.

  • Why stop at Ultrawide? Super-Ultrawide is where it's at, bruh!

what comes out, and the new LG 38GL950G(lg.com) looks very promising, but will probably be prohibitively expensive.

Everything newly out will be very expensive, and really it's not a smart move to buy something just out. Or camp 3 nights in front of the store for it for example. Hint apple.

The smart people would buy one generation older of that monitor now instead.

But that means missing out on the new monitor's features.

      • Welcome to the wonderful world of consumerism

    • Don’t worry I would never buy it at full RRP on release, I would wait a bit until it is on sale and hits one of the ebay stores that regularly gets the 20% off eBay sales, and use my 15% off eBay gift cards from the ebay UK sale, hopefully cashrewards is back on board then too, and I’ll use my Coles credit card to get points and claim the price protection over the next 24 months as it drops in price. There’s a reason Gerry calls us “professionals” ;) haha

  • I'm running a 1070 and managing to push decent frames on my X34. BFV runs at full res, albeit at low graphical settings, but I would imagine a 1080ti would push well past 60FPS and be more than usable.

That LG does look great, a very similar monitor which is what I've been eyeing is the LG 38WK95C-W. I also have a 1080Ti and it wouldn't break a sweat on these monitors, I used to run a higher than 4K res surround setup with just two GTX670's and never had to compromise any settings for framerate, the 1080Ti has almost double the power of the two of them together.

    • That one hasn’t got high refresh rate, only 60hz (75hz OC). No point in buying an expensive model for gaming unless it has high refresh rate unless it’s more for productivity and content creation.

But if that’s already $1750 I shudder to think what the new high refresh rate gsync model will cost. Hopefully when it’s released it pushes the price down a bit on the other models

  • Hi all. Looking at upgrading my monitor myself and considering trying an Ultrawide – probably the Acer x34p or Alienware AW3418DW. Running a 1080Ti. Pity the LG 34GK950F isn't available here, though not sure I want an LG product anyway. Considering how much cheaper the x34p's are now, is there any reason to get the Alienware? (other than 3 year warranty/Dell returns). Alienware doesn't have gamma control either, not sure if that's still an issue or can be fixed in nvidia control panel? What about ability to overclock them to 120hz - I'm assuming same luck of the draw with both? I understand it's not a guarantee and may just end up flickering. And possible scanlines with G-sync enabled on either monitor? Wouldn't mind spending a bit more on the Alienware if it is better (+better warranty/returns), and gamma issue doesn't impact it significantly.. I've read that some people can't fix it and end up returning it because of this…. might just have to wait for a good sale on it if it is the better buy though.

Also, where's best to buy monitors in SA, in regards with return policies/replacements if something isn't right? Harvey Norman? Or is it just a matter of Acer vs Dell with returns. (I guess Dell directly if buying AW3418DW?)

Saw this on one of the older ozbargain deals thread -

@cyrax83: Alienware actually uses a slightly newer revision that does 120hz better (vs. 100hz) AFAIK. otherwise, same panel.

Don't know if there's any truth to this? Or just same chance with overclock? I do like the idea of the RGB backlighting on the Alienware actually, to give some ambient light behind. Just not sure about the gamma issue and price.

So what's the latest verdict between these two?

    Thanks!
