WHY did I read this as iPhone?

    • +6

      To seek attention?

    • +8

I thought Under Armor was making phones…….

      • Yeah I was about to say, OP has spelt under armour wrong!

  • -4

You can get an s8 (refurbished from sellers like luvyoirphone or ctd) for that much.

    • +2

Yep but these target a different niché market ;)

    • +10

Less battery, more breakable, and you'd have a Samsung device. I'm not seeing any benefits…

      • +2

Reliability , long term battery life and updates .
And I'm no fan of Samsungs .

      • +2

Agreed. My GS8 is my first Samsung android phone and it's probably my least favourite smartphone I've owned.

      • You can't start a comfort fire as easily with this if you get stuck in the bush next winter.

    • +5

I agree I'd much rather a S8 to something like this. On paper this thing might win out but I'd be surprised if real life performance was better, not to mention these no name phones you really have to concede that it's going to have a well below average camera.

Also, why would someone want a rugged phone like this when you can arguably make ANY phone out there even more rugged with a fairly cheap case? That way you don't have to limit yourself to a tiny fraction of mostly no name phones… I dunno, just my thoughts anyway.

      • The main disadvantage of this phone is it will never (probably) see an update on it's life.

  • +2

MediaTek Helio P60 might be the let down - I'm still considering an AGM x3 - a bit more expensive but has the snapdragon 645 processor.. Not sure what other options are out there or how they compare for rugged devices

    • I don't understand why everyone hates the Mediatek chips so much - they're just as good as Snapdragon if you get a quality chip (like this one). Just like with Snapdragon, the cheapest chips are all pretty rubbish.

Those trying to root their phone and install custom ROMs will have more to choose from with Snapdragon, but that is a very small percentage of phone users.

just be advised Ulefone(and Mediatek) are notorious for not updating Android on their phones. Their facebook page has lots of people bitching about it. Basically they make a new phone instead of a new update.

Not sure if this is an inditement of Mediatek's SoC's or Ulefone complacency(or both) but purchase it with the idea Android 8.1 will likely be the only version for it.

Also based on previous experience their warranty service is to send the email to the trash.

    • Updates is a brand thing and not MediaTek as there are some like Chuwi who release updates for their devices.

Warranty with China really comes down to the seller anyway.

      • +2

Updates are very much a MediaTek thing. Their SoC driver code is only shared with their device partners, who have to pay a large sum of money(rumours of around $100 000) to get a new driver if they want to update to a newer version of Android, and only that partner gets the update.

Considering the margins on these phones that's incentive enough for partners to just release a new phone instead.

    • Not getting updates is probably a good thing IMHO. Too often a perfectly working phone will get updates causing all sorts of problems you never had before, without adding anything useful.

      • +2

        without adding anything useful.

        like security updates ?

        I know right? I miss IOS 4.

        Come on mate…

  • I would so get this phone but only problem is the weight - isn't 267 grams a bit too heavy?

    • Rugged with 5000mhA battery, won't be too light. Maybe a refurbished s8 instead

    • How heavy do you reckon a heavy-duty phone should be?

      • +1

        heavy-duty phone

Rugged smartphones are not made for princesses.

    • +1

Do you even lift bro? :P

  • Wth is this 😂!

  • Are these safe and wot about bloatware?

  • Tradiephone…

  • Would not touch a Ulephone again. Had a midrange model of one of this breed before and the thing was riddled with about 5 faults hardware and software.
    Absolute POS junk.
Only Chinese brand I would trust to be of reasonable quality and performance would be a Xiaomi.

    • +2

Only Chinese brand I would trust to be of reasonable quality and performance would be a Xiaomi.

      What about Huawei, Oppo, Vivo?

      • I'm referring more to the budget lower tier level Chinese phones, not Huawei, Oppos etc..

          Q3 2018:

          1st: Samsung - Q3 market share 18.9%
          2nd: Huawei - Q3 market share 13.4%
          3rd: Apple - Q3 market share 11.8%
          4th: Xiaomi - Q3 market share 8.5%
          5th: Oppo - Q3 market share 7.9%

Xiaomi are a big player up the top. Now that they've turned Redmi into a sub-brand much like Huawei did with Honor and ZTE did with Nubia we can technically say Redmi phones are the budget lower tier.

    • Do Taiwanese phones count also?

    • How about iPhones?

  • +1

do not trust this manufacturer. they don't have the capabilities to fine tune the android so that everything works together. besides this phone is not cheap compared with big brands.

    • What big brand rugged phones would that be?

      • if it's me, i would choose the previous year's flagship model from oneplus or huawei, similar price but much better quality.

        • Then this deal doesn't apply you as you're not looking for rugged waterproof phone.

          • @Clear: sorry, you are right. I didn't notice the wording "rugged waterproof". however lots of smartphones are waterproof now, from cheap ones like Motorola Moto X4 to to the newest Samsung and iPhone models. Personally I don't care too much about waterproof as I rarely drop my phone in water.

            • @markwen: Rugged phones are a whole different market and offer better protection against pretty much everything including how waterproof. The term tradiephone is accurate as local alternatives are crap.

              • @Clear: I understand. Some tradesmen do need a waterproof and shatterproof phone. Thanks mate

        • +1

          oneplus or huawei

          Try dropping those in water.

  • Nice specs for a rugged phone. Would be sweet if it had a sapphire screen and camera lenses like the recently-released Kyocera Duraforce Pro 2 which seems to be a US exclusive. I find that if you're actually using a phone in a harsh environment like a work site then the Gorilla Glass will eventually get scratched up.

  • As cool as this phone sounds, can you even trust ulephone ? The net is filled with QC complaints for this brand. Or was it elephone?
