OfficeWorks price match 1c discrepancy

This is a little strange but… I asked OfficeWorks to price match a $4.95 battery listed at Bunnings (OfficeWorks was $8.99 and I was buying other stuff so why not).

For some reason though they put it through at $4.96. It wasn’t a typo. They said 4.95, 4.95, “actually it’s 4.96” (it wasn’t).

I felt a little strange like they were trying to extract one extra cent from me so they’d feel they won or something, knowing I wouldn’t complain because you’d have to be crazy to say something over one cent. In retrospect I thought they’re also meant to beat prices by 5%?

Anyway it me feel sad. Because I’m always very polite and just asked for a price match.

Next time ask for their "Price Beat Guarantee", not for them to price match…

My heart goes out to you, I hope you can sleep at night.

  • its 1c, move on…..

OP can't move on, because they are trapped in some evil 1c curse.

Cheapest item on MYER online to make up shipping threshold

I have something to buy and need a minimum of 1c to add otherwise it’s $10 shipping.

The OP sounds like a gem to be dealing with. I'm so glad I'm not in retail.

        • I am nice to deal with and this is an unfair comment.

I politely asked to price match and didn’t say anything further.

Imagine you walk into a store, the person reads out the price twice, then says “oh it’s (1c more)” when you know it isn’t, then charges that.

Wouldn’t you wonder afterwards what was going on?

You feel sad as you did a price match for you and they over charged you by 1c. Oh please.

Why not buy from bunnings next time?

          • @Untameable: this is why you're losing hair, don't sweat the small stuff

I've had similar experience with Office Works. I've only price matched once with them because it was such an ordeal. The manager was super pissed, huffing and puffing like I was taking money from her own personal bank account. Maybe they lose some of their bonus or something? She told me they are only matching the price, you don't get the 5%. I said I've already called head office and they said you have to match and give 5%. (I rang the main number earlier to confirm if they would indeed price match etc as it was my first time doing it with them and I had a feeling I'd get some attitude - I always expect the worst). I thought the manager was going to have a heart attack. The checkout chick was trying not to laugh so bad at the way the manager was and how I wouldn't budge.

So weird, I've done it before and they were happy to do it (5% price beat).

      • Must just depend on the store manager. The lady I spoke to on the phone was bright and cheery about it, the manager at my local was so pissed.

I call or contact head office after any incident where rogue managers are deliberately trying to charge you more or prevent you from obtaining an offer, then next time I go in it's magically not an issue anymore.

          • @indium: Good idea, I'll definitely do that next time.

        • never got any problem getting 5% price matched.

Sometime they just matching and when I pointed that out, no one never give me hard time.

I have price beat for more than 10 times minimum

Just ask to do a split payment of $4.94 by card and $0.02 by cash where they will round this down to zero. So you beat them in their own game.

Yet here you are complaining about it on OzBargain?? Haha

    • It’s so odd that hours later I couldn’t help but wonder why they did that. What can I say? I’m not being mean about it though. It’s not the 1c it’s just wondering why.

  • knowing I wouldn’t complain because you’d have to be crazy to say something over one cent

and thus an OzBargain thread was born..

  • i just sent you 1c but it rounded down to $0. expect $0 in your account soon! best of luck!
