EU Road Trip Advice

i need pointers pls, would it be cheaper to buy a car in one country and then just drive it cross countries?
or rent separate cars in respective countries? i plan to buy one (wagon at least) and just sleep in it.

    how many days we talking?
    what countries?
whats the origin country and end country?
    whats your budget?
how are you sure you can sell at the end? how many days you giving yourself.

if 1 months or more id say buying and selling will prob be cheaper if you can see for nearly the same price and encounter no mechanical problems.

if < 1 months might be a hassle

You can't buy and sell unless you are a resident/citizen of the country (or you have a relative/friend) put it in their name.

Really need more context on the countries, etc. Is your itinerary fixed?

The best thing is to form a circle trip, returning back to the same country (and renting). Otherwise, renting and returning to another country will always cost you heaps more.

How long are you staying for? How flexible are you with locations, etc.?

  • thanks for the replies guys, im thinking maybe 2-3 months starting from germany and move up north. i thought it was gonna be easy as buying car here in australia? like even someone on temporary visa can buy a car here.

  • I was told by friends that Frankfurt was the place to hire Campervans from …. and when u compare that seems to be true. Not sure about cars. I know a lot of ‘cheap’ car hires turn into nightmare trips… extra charges thrown in Willy Nilly.
Round trip as dublin101 says is the way to go.
And instead of google maps try Michilen (tyres) travel app…. great info on distance V time V costs (including tolls)

  • For that lenght of time consider car leasing. Works out cheaper. Plus easier as everything gets registered in your name. I know there are a couple places in Munich in particular to do this.
Also, if renting, never book to rent from OZ in the destination country. Works out a lot cheaper in most cases if you rent from the country itself once you arrive or better yet if you call ahead directly (cuts out the middleman). Especially if renting from a central-eastern or eastern euro country.
