Lounge Access for Strangers yes or no

I’ve been planning on doing this fir awhile. It’s pre 5 am in Perth. I’m a woman in her mid 50s. I have some purchased lounge passes but damned if I’m going to use them before bar hours. I was chatting with a young Asian guy at security and followed him into the Lloumge he and asked him if he could get me in. His friends replied that they were over the limit so I said I’ll wait and see. What they hell. You gotta try. A guy within 10 years either side of me cane in standing purposefully in the queue and I asked him if he could get me in. He said no problem. I got in.

Just curious, if you had excess capacity and someone behaved and dressed semi appropriately, would you let them in if you had ability to do so?

I would. Wouldn’t care the gender or the age.

Looking for different outlooks. I’m sure there will be a diversity!

Have a great day everyone! 🤗💐

I would.. the likelihood of any trouble is pretty much zero - and you don't lose anything.

Waiting around to travel isn't always fun so if I can help someone make things easier… why not?

As bobbified said pretty much 0 repercussion so I would. There are even forums where you can request to be given access to a certain lounge on dates. Others put up which flights they are travelling on, which lounge they can access and how many people they can get in.

        Source or link?

        • There are a couple of "frequent flyer" groups on FB that do this. Some also have a google docs spreadsheet of future dates some people can guest randoms into lounges.

  • Curious is lounge area the private bar area at the airport?

And are you saying lounge members can let guests in?

And are you saying lounge members can let guests in?

Yes allowed to take guests in. For example Virgin Gold members can take 1 guest, platinum members can take 2 (or 3 can't remember).

      • Platinum is 3 guests.

        • ta, couldn't remember. 3 it is!

  • +2

    no

  • +5

Yeah, I would if I could.
I'd never have the guts to ask a stranger to take me in however..

  • It would be a resounding no from me if you happened to ask me

  • +2

I'm guessing your female. Would you ask another female?

Middle aged chubby guy like me probably wouldn't have any luck.

  • The answer is no because for me it's a security issue. The airport of all places is the last place I'd want to entertain strangers.

If you let them in, you've established a relationship.

What's the worst that could happen? At the very very worst case, they were carrying a b0mb and you may initially be seen as a suspect, but that'll be ruled out pretty quickly.

The only thing to not do is be left alone with someone else's belongings - whether you're just standing there looking after it or going through the checkpoint.

      • Have you ever been through US Customs mate? It's hell. Airport security is serious stuff.

We're talking about the lounge area at 5am in Perth.

If you have something else to lose (such as time, where it'll cause you delays or giving up an additional pass) to give someone else access, then obviously those additional considerations need to be taken into account.

          • @bobbified: Yeah what if you're on the same flight as this stranger and he has serious issues at your destination? Good luck with the hassle.

            • @Ryanek: What kind of serious issues are you referring?

The chances of you sitting together is pretty much 1 in 250 (or whatever the capacity of the plane is) - and that's only if you happen to be on the same flight. Otherwise, you're almost guaranteed to be parting ways after the lounge.

Like everything else, you have to use your judgement.

Mate, relax. We live in Australia, not some shithole place like America.

      i agree with you with…

      friends no problems… strangers nope.

      • +3

        friends no problems… strangers nope.

But strangers are just friends you've yet to meet :)

    • Seriously, I've stood orphan like outside airline lounges many a time and I've been let in as a guest. Personally, I don't need to be entertained - I'm happy sitting in my own little corner.

99.99% of us just want to skip beside you and get through the entrance. And I've never, ever thought of the airline lounges as a place to 'establish a relationship with someone……. I'm not looking to get married!

  • AFF have a thread of lounge meetups where you can request lounge access or find someone that can guest you in

i'm a middle aged chubby short guy. If any half decent looking female asked me, i would definately say yes and ensure we sit together and get to know each other better.

If another male asked me and he looked suspicious (i won't mention the stereotype) then no.

If another male asked me and he was in a suit i'd probably say yes

The half decent looking female would then ditch you within five metres of the front door to be with the boyfriend who used the one guest pass they had between them.

    • ^This man speaks what most guys have on their mind!

    • Don't know why you're being negged.

If the situations were reversed and you dared to ask a good looking girl to let you in, you'd probably get security called on you, much less just rejected.

  • Might be less of an issue at Perth, where I'm guessing there weren't many different flights at that time of the day, but my understanding is that a guest needed to be on the same flight as the 'host'. If so, much more difficult to identify / target a 'host' in larger, busier airports.

    • +1

Nah, the guests can be on another flight. They just need to be on the same airline that day.

  • +3

I'm a Platinum member with Velocity I would if people asked but will not go out of the way to ask someone if they wanted to come in. People will always think what's the catch.

We have in the past guested 'strangers' into Sydney's Qantas First Class lounge.

When my wife and I were both Platinum flyers, we could guest two - so generally we find another couple who 'looks' friendly to invite.

That said we have had the occasional person decline as well.

We do not sit with them when in the lounge though so they can do their own thing.

  • +1

There is a false sense of security in the lounge and people leave their valuables lying all over the place while they hit up the buffet etc. Guesting in a stranger - I would say no.

    • -1

It’s not like there is any vetting process to get lounge access in the first place, so all of the people in the lounge are ‘strangers’ not just the person you invite in…

  • -4

I literally have no idea what you're talking about, what you're asking or what the irrelevant details are for. So my answer is no.

  • I say yes but draw the line at sharing the lounge showers.

  • How are you off for undies?

  • +2

Lol. Thanks everyone. The three guys I initially asked though they were already over their limit. Then a random guy comes in and is standing beside me. There was no drama. He didn’t give a crap either way and I never saw him again. There was never any intention of having. Conversation . I thanked him and went on my way.

I’d do it for any young person who looked respectable and any not so young person.

  • This thread should probably have a poll in it.

If someone asked, and they were dressed reasonably and seemed like a normal person, I would absolutely let them in as my guest.

  • -1

    Another FREERIDER!

    The answer is STRICKLY NO!

However if you offered to PAY for such access thats different.

NOTE: As somebody's guest you are obliged to stay with them in the lounge and leave before or when they do.

    • You do not have to stay in the lounge with them and leave before or when the card holder does. There are hundreds of people for a start, how are they going to know???? And I couldn't count the number of times, I've gone into the lounges over the years with my parents and we've all been on flights, and separate ones at that, at separate times.
