  • On a side note, just to hijack this thread….even though Google play advertises movies in 5.1 audio, can anyone get 5.1 audio to play?

I have a Sony A8F tv connected to a Yamaha amp via optical and cant get 5.1 stream on Google Play whilst I can when watching content from Netflix, Amazon Prime and Apple TV.

    • I'm in the same boat. Netflix and Stan output 5.1 perfectly fine, but nothing but PCM stereo from the Google Play app. Running a Sony Android based TV fully updated, into an Onkyo TX-NR626 via optical.

      • Tried a chromecast?

        • Hmm good idea. No I haven't but I have a friend with one. I should try it out! Cheers.

        • Well thr SonyTV has inbulit Chromecast so you think it would work regardless of plugging in a seperate Chromecast.

Then also got issue of having to plug in a 4k Chromecast to get 4k res.

          • @bargrin: Yep sucks hey. Never rely on smart tv apps.

            • @onlinepred: I totally agree. I have a budget Sony TV from 2013. Netflix crashed a lot. Stan was very slow. Amazon Prime wasn’t available in the list of apps.

I was given a Apple TV for Christmas and my TV is now a dream to use.

              • @edathor: Great example of when software and hardware works well. I hope that the new TV's that have Apple TV in them are as good as the actual apple tv.

          • @bargrin: Hey just a bit of an update on this for anyone interested. So I have tested running a 5.1 movie 3 ways and here are the results.

Running native app on tv = 2.0
Running via built in chromecast on tv = 2.0
Runnng via an actual chromecast (gen 1) attached to an hdmi input = 5.1 !!!

So the built in app and chromecast are the issues here.. it must be a google thing, as The native Netflix and Stan Apps can output 5.1 just fine..

            Annoying but there you go..

            • @narcoleptic-haze: Yup same story with me, plugged in my Choremcast into HDMI and started getting 5.1 on Google movies.

However I now need to get an Ultra 4k if I want to watch in 4k, which is annoying cause its built into TV.

Wonder if I can ask Sony for any update to TV for a fix?

Also of note, I cant get 5.1 to work on any app downloaded on Google tv store :(
