Holy Crap; what does this do? How does this work with GH?

      • so it's shit

      • so no free youtube?
Does the lenovo one do that as well?

      • +5

Where did you hear this? I haven't had any issues casting YouTube so far.

        • -6

          Did I mention casting anywhere?

          • +2

@freewhere: 'Doesn't play YouTube without a subscription' is incorrect. It does play YouTube, definitely without a subscription. No need to specify casting or not.

      • -5

Seriously! 11 negs for stating a helpful fact? Pretty sure self-righteous folks who negged me are thinking that can't be true, how could google be so stupid. This guy must be lying.

        • +2

I just negged because your comment stated it doesn't play YouTube without subscription, which is incorrect.

      • +1

        That is incorrect.

    • +5

It's like a digital photo frame crossed with a Google Home Mini.

When it's not being used it displays your Google Photos on a slideshow, and the screen automatically adjusts to the light in the room; the photos almost look like they've been printed out (really neat).

You can ask it everything you can already ask Google Assistant, plus you can play YouTube on it, cast and control music, and see your calendar. The screen is real handy for commands like asking what traffic is like on the way to work, or to visually see your upcoming events on your calendar.

Bought one a month ago and definitely recommend it.

      • but he just said

Doesn't play youtube videos without subscription.

        • +4

I've never heard of this limitation, and can't find anything to back it up online.

          • +4

@hopper: This just says that the Home Hub comes with a 6 month trial of Premium, not that it requires Premium to cast (which is false)

      • +1

Sounds like it has limited utility if you don’t use Google Photos and you’re not single (unless you have a shared calendar?)

I’ll pass - with those sorts of limitations it seems like an expensive weather station tbh

        • If you aren't already pretty well-invested into the Google ecosystem it is a little hard to justify. I had to move all my photos over into Google Photos which ended up being really handy for me, but for someone not keen to run their life through Google, it's a bit of a hard sell.

          • @ngengerous: you can also set your iPhoto to backup to Google Photos for redundancy. Then it will display those and you get a backup. Thats what I am currently setting up

            • @MAB: Redundancy from… nuclear apocalypse destroying all of apple’s own redundant data centres and their off line backups?

            • @MAB: I'm not so much an Apple guy as a 'store photos on my own external drives' guy. Changing that though, as I'd rather not accidentally drop my drive and lose all my memories, especially with unlimited storage available….

      • my photos are on my nas, so would I have any use for this vs a home with a better speaker?

        • Regardless of which Home you purchase, you'd need to upload your photos to your Google account. This is the Home with the best display for viewing photos, if that's what you're looking for.

    • +1

it records everything you say then sends that off to google who will use it any way they can to make money and sell it on to anyone willing to pay.

Aaaaahhhh i love you to join our network security team

  • Hopefully the chalk does come back in stock.

  • too slow.

  • +1

    Garrgh.. missed it!
    :(

    Thanks for the post OP.

Youtube works without a subscription. Im casting videos with no issues to my chrome cast on my TV using google assistant.

Check back for stock. I bought one from these guys last week for $165 after discount, then they changed the price so now its cheaper.

AU serial number on the box, AU on barcode. No grey import.

They shipped within a week in a satchel using AusPost. Box was wrapped in full plastic original packaging for those worried about some of these random eBay shops.

    • Thanks :)

    • what if you ask google to play a particular song? My GH keeps telling me that I need a premium subscription

      • +3

You need it on Google Home speakers.
You don't need the subscription for any Google Home device that has a Screen (Google Home Hub or the Lenovo)

        • +1

          Thanks for clarifying this!

        • It's only free for 2 weeks. There was a 6 month extension for anyone that activated before 31/12/2018. (this may or may not have been extended)
Lenovo smart display devices get 3 months.

      • +1

You can register a spotify account with it. That also works.

  • Good price

  • Someone has to ask this. Does it play pr0n?

  • love my google hub. Bought in release and its great

  • Missed it FeelsBadMan

  • damn I need to buy with with a .sg / uk plug this week. most come in at 205 aud
(have a few AU ones at home, I like them )

  • +1

    back in stock

  • How's the sound quality on these?

    • +1

Awful. Worse sound than the Mini. Okish for youtube vids but terrible for music etc

    • Jbl Link view has the best sound quality of the smart displays

  • Not bad for a photo viewer!

    • Hmm oh really it does a lot more than that

    • that's the reason I bought it.

going to give it to parents and see if I can push photos automatically to it.

      • Oh I can see this being a terrible idea… Getting some popcorn ready.

      • It uses google photos so you will be able to do that.

  • The speakers on this are terrible. Worse quality than a Google Mini.
I returned mine and got the Lenovo one. Bigger screen and much better speaker quality.

    • Yes the Lenovo is excellent.
I've got it in the kitchen/living-area.
      .
Getting one of these (with the ambient light sensor) for the bedroom.

  • +1

The seller is price jacking… what a rip….
    $209 now and climbing probably…
I can't get this out of my cart without losing it or the price going up.
Not gonna be thinking of those (profanity) again.

Soooo tempted on buying it just to give them a fat negative.

  • Back in Stock.
Price is now $167.20 after discount.
    .
Still a pretty good price I thought… so ordered one.
