Now the question is, should I buy it or go for Seagate Ironwolf?

  • It's kind of like a standard price for 3TB red isn't it? Still 43/TB.

    • I looked at previous deals, best was $109 I believe. Looking at eBay, this deal is still the best you can find for WD red 3Tb atm.
Of course you can spend a little bit more and get 4Tb ones, but then you can spend just a little more-more and get 6tb 🙂
So at some point need to draw a line in the sand on how much you wanna spend.

I'm open to other options for 3tb capacity or 2tb sub $100. Not in a rush 😉

Not negging this, just saying. I bought 2 Toshiba DT01ACA300 3.5" 3TB 7200RPM sata 6Gb/s HDDs in 2013 for $138 a piece. I've wanted to replace them with a larger capacity for a while, but looking to spend around the same. I know our dollar is a lot lower now, but i'm still upset that so much later nothing has changed here, price wise.

This HDD is for a NAS.

      • You can still use a NAS HDD in a PC / Laptop assuming the size of your HDD bay is the same.
NAS HDDs are built for staying on 24/7.

I believe the point they were trying to make was the hard drive camh purchased is not rated/suitable for use in a NAS.

      • The Toshibas were NAS rated too. That's how I used them.

        • I can't find any information online that supports what you're saying.

    • It looks like NAS HDD didn't really drop in price for that capacity, unfortunately.
I don't really need 4/6/8tb capacity therefore can't justify to spend more overall to get the $/tb cheaper.

    • You can't be serious if you are making this coparison strictly on price or "value".

WD Reds are intended for NAS use. Because of this purporse, they are designed for 24/7 running in a NAS box and ideally at a lower spin rate of 5400RPm to to ensure long-term stability and reliabilty.

The Toshiba's you quote are for Desktop PCs. Sure they have a higher spin rate 7200RPM however you cannot expect long-term stability or reliability if you were to run them 24/7.

Also, I am not aware of what the warranty is offered on the Toshiba;s, but the WD Reds have a 3 year warranty if the drivess are being used for their untended design use.

I have been using WD Red for years now and they are in my experience, the most reliable for the purpose of installation in a NAS. Their (WD) colour-code system of WD Blue , Green, Purple, Black, Red & Gold HDDs reflect the different purposes they have been designed for. Check the web-site for a description for each.

Warranty and Support from WD, in my experience, has always been fantastic and better than average. I cannot trust Seagate anymore as their Tech support no longer measures up by comparison. I have an antiques museum of Seagate (and other brands that Seagate took over) that failed, most within warranty period.

      • Thanks wd red it is then!

      • So what is your experience with returning a WD drive under warranty? Process was ok but cost a fortune to send to Singapore.

  • Still waiting for a reasonable price on WD Red 6TB to replace my 4x3TB Nas. Can't justify the current price at the moment so I might have to offload some of my ahem umm… home videos…
