I'm really considering this, are there any other close rivals in this price range I should also be considering?

  • Is this the laptop with scarce usb ports

  • It has 3 USB ports, card reader, HDMI port, network connection, VGA port, Mic in and headphones out.

  • just 12 months warranty?…its Asus

All machines that are not U, N or G are 1 year,
      U, N and G series carry 2 years
      All K, X and A series are 1 year.

  • Sorely tempted. Search staticice for "i3 5470" (without quotes) and this is by far the cheapest. Decent graphics as well.

How about a portable 13" deal MLN? :)

    • If they have a 13 or 14 inch with the same specs and price as this Asus or the Acer in the link above (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/43581), I would buy it in a heartbeat.

    • Spets
Have you seen the Toshiba t130 on our website for under $600?
      What do you think?

      • Was hoping for a sandy bridge laptop, but would be a great deal for some.

        • +1

Sandy bridge in 13" will still be $1000+ for sometime still

  • Its a good machine

Picked one up, thanks MLN. Pretty amazing price.

  • Damn you, MLN! :P
Very tempted! I was scouring through your website last night and also saw the Acer for $596.

Would be good to get some advice on the following though:
Spec for spec, the Acer seems to have faster CPU (i3 2.4GHz vs i5 2.53GHz/2.80GHz) and a 1GB graphics card instead of 512MB.
How does the 1024MB GeForce GT 420M (inside the Acer) compare against the 512MB HD5470 (in the Asus)?
I see the Acer as a far more superior machine for the extra $47. What aspects of this machine make it more worthwhile than the Acer?

      http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark…

the GT 420M is ranked 95th compared to the 5470 which is ranked 147th, so a fair difference there in performance.

EDIT: Not sure if this is still true, but I've heard the quality of Asus machines is far better than Acer machines. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

      • Thanks for that!
I've always had that feeling between the Acer and Asus.

I get asked this all the time, after many years of thinking about this it's going to come down to One thing only. There is no real choice, it's whatever you think is best.

If I was to dissect these offers, I would not put much difference on the GPU, and the difference in core i3 & i5 is turbo boost allowing a higher clockspeed so it's minimal in real performance, only the i7 makes a real difference. I would put it to brand difference. Anything below an i3 in 14" and below is unacceptable. Great graphics cards cost big dollars as much as processors and you need to look at $1200 +.
so to sum it up, I wood buy the brand I like when it's below $1000

      • Thanks for that, too!

I know Asus products are have a better build quality but the tightness in me is really wanting the Acer :P lol.

        • you have to play with them both, go into the store - the Acer is plasticy and feels cheap

  • Which one would be better,
    Lenovo
    Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-480M Processor 2.66GHz
    Memory: 4GBx1 1333MHz DDR3
    Internal drives: 500GB / 7200rpm Hard Drive
    Multi-Burner (12.7mm)
    Display size: 15.6" HD AntiGlare
    ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5145 Graphics (512MB)
    or this asus laptop?

You're looking at a tradeoff in performance between the CPU and GPU. That Lenovo has a faster cpu but slower graphics chip.

      From Notebookcheck:

The AMD ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5145 is a renamed Mobility Radeon HD 4570 with slightly higher clock rates. Therefore (despite the 5000 series name), the card supports only DirectX 10.1 and is still produced in 55nm. The card is only slightly faster as the 4570 and slower than a new HD 5470.

Whereas this deal has a Radeon 5470, which is more powerful and supports DX11.

As a media laptop, or a low end gaming machine this ASUS is better.

Very similar in performance, it's up to you generally though Lenovo is always cheaper and the GPU carries more weight in this Asus vs Lenovo spec. CPU difference in i3 and i5 is not as great than with the GPU

      Double post

    • How much is that lenovo and where can it be bought?

      • It can be bought from officemax online, the laptop cost 569+postage. Let me know which one u prefer.

        • I will be getting the asus because gfx cards hold a lot of value when I shop for laptops

  • [delete]

  • Hard drive is partitioned into 116Gb and 329Gb which to me is a bit annoying. But you can scroll down the page by dragging three fingsers on the mouse pad.

    • heyy funky cat dude, did you eat that mouse on the mouse pad?

      • lolwut?

  • how much does this weigh? and how long is battery life?
