Apple Will Never Make a Touch Screen Mac

Hey Guys,

I have been using my Surface Pro for my new job and can honestly say that it is a great machine. My previous device was a top of the line Macbook Pro with Touchbar but i find the Surface Pro a much better machine overall.

I work in a team where drawing out ideas is often required and notice my colleagues carrying around a mac, ipad and pencil to get the job done. I realise this isn't everyone but my point is that Apple make more money this way with you buying multiple devices when Microsoft give it to you all in one.

Thanks

    Ipad Pro + Smart Folio KB = Surface Pro + Keyboard?

    • +8

      Sorry no. Surface is running full windows whereas IOS is a mobile OS.

      • You're not helping yourself with this comment.

    Good find! kudos to you!!

  • A lot of people are starting to realise this. I think the TB is a great feature, and hopefully filters down to the more affordable units. Apple still control the tablet market, but their pricing on the mini is criminal, compared to the 9.7.

      Sorry TB?

      Edit. Just came to me TouchBar.

    • +5

      I personally found the touch bar a half ass gimick and them trying to compete with Windows without canabilising their ipad market. The only way i could see it being useful is to heavily customise it with BetterTouchTool but that is out of the realm of the average user.

        You're right.

        But if you've been watching the scenes you know that Apple is merging the iPad and iMac lines.
        They will expand more and more into chip production, until they can produce a line of products that scale as such.

        Example:
        7.9 inch = 2x Apple Core + 4x Cortex A55, 2GB RAM, iGPU, Face tracking/unlock with front/rear cameras
        9.7 inch = 3x Apple Core + 4x Cortex A55, 4GB RAM, iGPU+ Face tracking/unlock with front/rear cameras
        11.1 inch = 4x Apple Core + 4x Cortex A55, 8GB RAM, iGPU++ Face tracking/unlock with front/rear cameras
        12.9 inch = 6x Apple Core + 4x Cortex A55, 8GB RAM, iGPU++ Face tracking/unlock with front/rear cameras
        15.1 inch = 8x Apple Cores + 4x Cortex A55, 16GB RAM, iGPU++ and dGPU, Face tracking/unlock with front/rear cameras
        16.9 inch = 8x Apple Cores + 4x Cortex A55, 16GB RAM, iGPU++ and dGPU+, Face tracking/unlock with front/rear cameras
        21.5 inch = 8x Apple Cores + 4x Cortex A55, 16GB RAM, iGPU++ and dGPU+, Face tracking/unlock with front/rear cameras
        27.0 inch = 16x Apple Cores + 4x Cortex A55, 16GB RAM, iGPU++ and dGPU++, Face tracking/unlock with front/rear cameras

        iMac's will get a swivel stand so it can be used in many angles, and it will use face biometrics, include a lot of iOS Apps, UI, and Features, and most importantly become fully touchscreen and keyboard/mouse orientated (like other Windows All-in-One PC's).

        MacBook's will start out as iPads with removable keyboards. The larger screen models will eventually get a swivel-hinge like the Lenovo Yoga, and have the keyboards be non-removable (but include a dGPU inside). It too will use face biometrics, include a lot of iOS Apps, UI, and Features, and most importantly become fully touchscreen and keyboard/touchpad orientated. These will happen a little after the iMac's.

        Apple will move away from Intel, AMD, and Nvidia…. just as long as it secures a good deal with Fab providers.

    • Apple still control the tablet market

      How?

      In 2018, apple accounted for approx 22% of tablet sales.

      Android accounts for approx 75% of the market.

      Only by a very narrow definition of 'control' would this be true.

        I think what they mean is nobody in their right mind buys an Android tablet because Google removed tablet support from Android and using an OS designed for phones on a tablet sucks.

      • +2

        They probably mean only Apple make a tablet that customers don't want to throw off a roof, ya dig?

      • Maybe they were talking about profit share, or maybe they weren't aware that all tablets that are non iOS are made by the one mythical company that pumps out 75% of the market.

      • Maybe mixing up this story today about Australian sales?

        The iPad Pro is much more expensive than anything else in it's segment, but along with the Apple pencil it is excellent for graphic design, like a lightweight version of the Surface Pro. For someone who has a need to use both on a regular basis, the Surface Pro is obviously the smarter choice for now, since you don't have to buy/carry/charge two devices with you every day.

        The Android tablet market is still going for now, despite Google's clear lack of enthusiasm, having openly sidelined the Android tablet sector last year. Google's Chrome OS is their preferred option, which has a small footprint, inherent security, clean & simple interface, streamlined system updates making it far more serious as a tablet OS than Android ever could be. Android is suited to Phones and TVs, but the range of Android tablets looks like disappearing within a few years.
        The market for low-end to mid-range tablets is centred on primary school students, and the Chrome OS is a perfect fit for most cases (most primary and even secondary students today purely use tablets for media/ebooks/web-based content), due to the advantages above, on top of offering far better value than Windows10S/iOS devices.

        Each of these hardware/OSes plays to the strength of their respective features, and no single option will suit every buyer.

      • I'm not sure but pretty confident the 22% of iPad sales is far greater in revenue than the remaining android percent. Think of all the $50 tablets parents buy for their toddlers.

        • Market control and profit are two very different things.

    Never?

    Never is a VERY LONG time.

    I don't think this will age well. Apple also said they will never make a large phone. The market decides.

    Apple will most likely make the Mac Book Pro touch as some point, even if it is only the top model. They could also release a touch-enabled stand alone screen to go with the modular Mac Pro that is still to come.

  • How is the Surface Pro stylus though? After owning even the OG SGS Note dumb stylus are terrible to use compared to having even basic pressure sensitivity.

    • +1

      The surface pro stylus has pressure sensitivity. I used mine for drawing no problem

    • +1

      It's not the greatest IMO. Mine doesn't detect some movements due to angling the stylus too much. Pro users are better off getting a drawing tablet.

    macOS is the reason I stay

    • I understand that. I have used both heavily and think Windows 10 is undervalued. I get it based on the horrible time between Windows 7 and 10 (the original reason i switched to mac) but those were the awkward teenage years of what developed to be a very tightly and well implemented touch interface. Just don't install tons of crap on it like any OS.

  • Thanks

    You're most welcome.

    It is a real shame people didn't flock to the VAIO Z Canvas. Real computing and a quality body. Absolutely no compromise, so only the form factor was the only limiting (or liberating) factor.

  • Noted…. Thanks

  • umm the keyboard and pencil, is needs to purchase.

  • +2

    I am one of those people with a mac + ipad + pencil. I take them to school and it is a pain in the ass lugging it all around (my Macbook is also 5 years old and heavy af). I do love my ipad + pencil though, it has made taking notes a breeze, but if I could have everything in one package it would be great. I thought about getting a surface but I just like MacOS better.

    And the price of the ipad + pencil wasn't too bad. I bought them on black friday for US$325 together, which I think is acceptable. Couldn't justify the marginal performance (and camera) improvement in the pro for the price.

  • Good to hear. Great bargain!

  • https://www.wired.com/2010/10/gorilla-arm-multitouch/

    Jobs hated the idea of touch screen laptop, thats one reason we didnt see macbooks with a touch screen.
    Well, it's up to Tim Cook now, we may or may not see the touchscreen macbooks.

  • Or you could get something like a Pixelbook and run web apps and Android apps and Linux apps. Supports stylus input as well.

  • It'll be never if there's no vote option, give it to the people!
