Boost Zume 5 4G $14.50 (from $69) @ Coles

220

Compact 4” Android phone for the price of a pint - a similar model went on sale last month as well and deal was then expired, looks like they got a new batch in. This one says it’s 4G while last month’s one was 3G according to Coles.

Mixed reviews here.

  • I’ve got one one these-only runs Android 6 but fine for playing music and light light gaming.

    • Easy to unlock?

If you are paying $14/pint, please turn in your ozbargain membership!

Could be good for a disposable GPS tracker, unlike previous $15 burner phones that lacked GPS.

Do Boost phones still take Optus SIMs without unlocking?

    • Boost used Telstra network. Would require unlocking.

      • +1

Ah! I see Optus lost the license back in 2013.
But ZTE, so a $3 ebay unlock and $5 ALDI SIM and we're in business :-)

Does Pokemon Go run on this?

I mean of course it doesn't but I gotta ask

Can I play Fortnite on this? Asking for my kid.

  • Alcatel U5 is also available for $29 at Coles

  • This or s10+ 🤔

    • +2

I would go for s10 due to the dual SIM option

    • S10+, 100 of these of 100 pints?

Could be an interesting option for a handlebar mounted bike computer/gps/strava/mapmyride etc. I'm never going to mount my good phone to a handlebar, but this, for the price of an (albeit expensive) pint, why not.

  • Could I use this to stream Kayo to my Chromecast? Because I can't be bothered using my main phone to cast the game so this may be a good option if possible.

Insane price for an incredible phone (at the price point)

But that's about what it's worth, may come in handy for a single app. Band 28 on a phone of this spec is absolutely 'What the?'

I have this phone which I bought for 29.95 in Apr 2018. I used this to keep my personal mobile number active ( I use my office phone for most purposes).

    A)Diary type case is available.
B)Unlock code was like 4 USD from ebay.
C)Charging is slow. If you use it like a GPS then it can drain even if connected to a car charger.

GPS is ultra accurate. I use it all the time because my iPhone GPS is faulty.

    • Would I be able to use it to cast to Chromecast such as Youtube, Netflix etc? Thanks

  • I've had no joy finding stock of this. Tried 3 stores in Canberra (Jamison, Belconnen, Kaleen), nil stocks. I find myself in Launceston / Wellington St this morning, they have an apology note printed on the shelf, unavailable. Note says they're offering the Alcatel U3 instead for the same price. I declined.

    • Better saying, good luck finding it. Like the good ol' Dick Smith deals

    • Yeah, I have tried 3 stores in WA myself with no luck.

Mowbray have it, as of 0820.

  • If anyone in WA knows where there is stock and could let us know, it'd be much appreciated.

Will this still be a valid offer? If we can prove the offer is valid, you can get a pricematch at BigW. I did this about two weeks ago for this phone.
As a cheap phone it's the best I've personally had (<$100), but boot time is slow. Screen is bright and clear. The speaker is almost listenable too which is a bonus.

      • Thanks for the reply. Not sure about the Zume, it's not in this week's catalogue. They have a few others that are in this week's catalogue, so maybe that'll be good. I might have to go for the Alcatel u5 3G for $29 which Coles have in the catalogue.
