Philips HD2137/72 Viva Collection All-in-One Cooker $127.20 + Delivery (Free C&C) @ The Good Guys eBay

170
PGUYS20

Seems like a pretty good price on a well reviewed digital pressure/slow/rice/muti cooker.

I'd be interested to know from people who own one what their thoughts are. I'm currently in the market for a pressure/multi cooker and might end up pulling the trigger on this one today.

I just saw that Amazon price matched TGG and also have free shipping.

It's the only pressure cooker I've ever owned, so no point of reference or comparison but it handles quite a variety of stuff, from cooking normal rice to curries, beef stews and soups.

Sear function is not that useful, it only gets hot enough to brown very small pieces of food, stick with using a skillet if you want to brown large amounts of meat.

slow cook function is also not that great.

It does it's basic functions well as a pressure cooker, and in a pinch can be used to cook pretty decent rice, albeit with a lengthier start-up time because it takes time for it to accumulate pressure.

    • Thanks scrim. Did you experience white rice browning when cooking it? How's the non-stick coating holding up over time? Have you used it much?

      • +1

nope, rice doesn't brown too much on the bottom, it's actually very slightly.

I usually start serving rice shortly after the cooking process finishes so I haven't noticed it forming a crust or anything. If you leave it on warm and don't release the pressure, I suppose you may overcook the rice as the residual heat causes carry-over cooking,

I have probably used the pressure cooker much less than most people, only using it 3 to 5 times a month so it hasn't experienced much wear or tear, haven't noticed the non-stick degrading at all.
Mine was bought roughly 2.5 years ago and still holding up fine.

        • Thanks, pretty much alleviated the concerns I had with it.

I'll most likely purchase tonight if a better deal doesn't pop up by the time the code expires.

    • Same here and agree on the saute function. I just use a pan on the stove set to high and chuck it in the pot after. Seems fine for doing stuff like frying onions etc.

Rice turns out really good in it too and the non-stick makes it not burn on the bottom.

Only downside is you can't fit larger cuts of meat in it when you want to use the slow cook function. If you wanted to do a full bone-in shoulder roast or something like that then you'll need to get a separate, larger slow cooker. Otherwise you can settle for a half roast and it works fine :)

I have this model and really like it. I used a different branded on the other which was faster to pressurize, but was noisy and seemed to always be venting a bit. Cooks great, bit annoying to clean around the lid, but seems pretty typical.

  • Why on earth can't they put a thermostat and PID in these so you can set a temperature?
Surely would be well worth the maybe $10 it would add to retail price?

    • Because it costs more to make sure its food safe

  • I find the rice cooking function is not as great as a normal rice cooker. Rice on the bottom will turn brown slightly. Also the searing function is very slow to heat up and can only cope with small amounts.

Saying that, l love mine. Use it all the time for pressure cooks, slow cooks without any probs. I've cooked ribs, pulled pork, osso bucco and beef cheeks on this.

That's a bit of a downer about the browning of the rice. Have you tried different settings or amounts of water/time to see if it can be stopped?

How's the non-stick coating holding up over time, has it been used much?

      • Don't think you can choose different settings for rice. Re the water/time, that might help but I haven't personally tried. I use a tiger brand rice cooker now and that's super easy n convinent.

Coating seems to be holding well. I haven't scratched it yet touch wood.

Can I ask what recipe did you use for the pulled pork? I tried a random recipe but it was a fail (100% my fault, i believe!) thanks!

      • My recipe was random too. Why did yours fail? Meat still too tough? not enough flavours?

        • +1

Meat super tough! I hope it was the poor quality of the meat. Taste was great. How long do you normally cook it for?

          • +1

@ets27: Set it to slow cook on 12hrs. Depending on the size, it might need another 2-4hrs. I find that for tough cuts, the pressure cooker won't make it tender even after 45mins cooking.

            • @slips9: I will try again, thanks for the tip.
Do you think it makes a big difference between slow cooker high temp or low temp?

              Cheers!

    • Try steam function 8 mins for rice . Works great for me
