  • If I need to carry this around attached to my phone so that I can listen to music then that is not exactly a convenient experience

Sorry dude this is Desktop amp & dac

LOL. It’s a desktop amp, so of course carrying it around with your phone would be inconvenient.

just on people's "headphone journey", I bought into the idea that you could get better sound for less money compared to going down the speaker path - and while that may be true - I switched to team speakers recently and haven't looked back.

You just get a far more enjoyable and versatile setup, and honestly by the time you've spent this kind of money on a DAC, amp, and let's say a pair of HD6XX's, you could have a pretty fantastic speaker setup instead.

Which shouldn't be taken as criticism of the deal, but just something I thought I'd throw out there for anyone who is thinking about getting into it.

    • Yeah good input mate, 100% agree. But in a lot of cases we just aren't in the right situation/environment to use good speakers at a reasonable listening level. Don't wanna disturb neighbours, other occupants in my house etc. So then a good headphone + Dac Amp combo is the way. Listening in your own privacy without disrupting others.

I wouldn't underestimate near-field listening as an option if levels are a medium concern, but there's no doubt headphones definitely still have a place for sure. There's nothing better for isolating yourself from the outside world for a while, whereas the speaker experience is more like being transported to another world. Both are nice depending on your mood and what you're listening to - I'm not getting rid of my sets of headphones any time soon lol, but I do listen to my speakers far more often now.

but yeah, whatever your preference I guess the point is just that headphone rigs aren't necessarily any better than speaker rigs of the same price IMO, which runs kind of contrary to what "the internet" tends to recommend in my experience (its definitely what leant me towards buying headphone gear when I got started).

        • Spot on man! :)

        • Agree with some of your points…
But the true nature of speakers based sound really depends on room acoustics. That means only the room setup will need $5k-$15k investment.
Even if we leave that point, there is no speaker under $5k + dac/amp price that can give the sound projection lets say like a Focal Elear / DT1990 / Focal Clear which can be achieved under $2k
Also with speakers you need a right enviornment for 'enjoyable' listening experience. Not a lot of us would have access to such 'ideal' environment.

High end Headphone setup for music will always be heaps (relatively) cheaper than highEnd speaker setup

          • @Jabberwocky: definitely much easier to spend a house deposit on speaker systems, I won't argue with that lol.

"Amazing neutral sounding" = shit sounded exactly the same.

"This DAC is NIGHT AND DAY compared to this other DAC" = shit sounded exactly the same.
