  • Not bad but you still have to pay to have a Qantas FF account.

    • Indeed, although it is only a once off $82.50 fee (no recurring fees).

  • It's the only card that I could find that accumulates Qantas FF points without having an annual fee. Unless you were lucky enought to get the Citibank Gold card when they had the no fee for life offer. I'm still waiting for them to bring that back.

    • Try this link for Citibank Visa/Mastercard:

      https://www.citibank.com.au/cardsoffer/offers/200607_DDP76HY…

Try to get the Gold if you can, since it include free travel insurance ….

One thing though, for CB you can only transfer to QFF once you reach 10000 points, and only transfer on per block of 10000 points, whereas for Amex you get the QFF points at end of the billing cycle for all the spending at the month.

Tell me if the link works or not.

      • Looks like it's working, but now I'll have to wait for the results. I tried two different links previously but they both didn't work, so it's good to see that this one's working so far.

        • This link should work. Also it has free supplementary cards as well. I have had this card for like 2 years now and it works fine. However the interest rate is like > 20% so if you don't pay off at end of interest rate period this is not the best card for you.

If you want more info have a look at www . frequentflyer . com . au

thechengman, if your application works and do get a free Visa/Mastercard, it may be worth while putting it as a new deal in this website, even though this deal has been around for a while.

          • @tstsang: Will do, just got a call from Citibank actually at 9pm (what hours do they work?) telling me to send them my payslip. If it all goes through and I get the card without any annual fee I'll be sure to promote the offer again.

            • @TCM: Gee that's fast! At this rate you will probably get the card within 1 week.

Definitely the best Visa/Mastercard credit card in terms of value of money and best rewards, that is if you pay the card on time (within interest free period).

      • I will apply for this. You should put this as a new bargain itself :-).

  • Another drawback is that I (personally) found that AMEX is not as widely accepted as Visa and MC. I remember JB Hifi charges some percentage (surcharge) if you pay with Amex.

    • Agreed. There's surcharge to Amex (and Diner) in lots of places I've been.

  • A better deal is the Earth credit card, it's linked to Qantas FF and includes a Amex which gives you 1 point per $1, and a Mastercard which gives you .5 points per $1.

The advantage being that in the many place you can't use your Amex you can still use the MC and get some points.

Disadvantage: Yearly Fee on the Amex ($79, I think)

    • Citibank has a special offer annual fee free for life with 1:1 QFF points and free travel insurance (Gold). Have a look at the link I posted earlier. Yes you can choose between Visa or Mastercard.

  • if you have foreign address, you can use it to apply for QFF for free :)

    • Hmmm..that gives me an idea.

  • I've been trying to get one of these for a few weeks now, and nearly every time I try to apply, it comes up with an error:

Sorry, the American Express online application is currently unavailable. Please try again later.

    • That's weird, maybe try ringing them to do an over the phone application… I didn't have that problem with the Amex application, it was only with the citibank application that I had problems with and it was not until today that I managed to get that working with the link posted by tstsang above. Maybe give that one a go as well.

  • Earth often offer free Qantas frequent flyer membership too - it's promotional. So that saves you ~$80. But the card has an annual fee. So if you wanted to join Qantas FF anyway the Earth card will be cheaper (if you cancel in 1st or 2nd year). Or you could join American Airlines frequent flyer program instead - it's free and in the same alliance.

I have both the free gold Citibank and this Amex - there's pros and cons to each. I err more on the side of my Citibank card.

  • For those who don't care to read the fine print on these things, just be aware of the following:

    Invitation
I invite you, your agents, Qantas Airways Limited and your preferred alliance organisations (including insurance companies) to use my personal information for marketing purposes. This includes contacting me by telephone, mail or email to discuss and agree any purchase of goods or services from an American Express company or your products and of Qantas Airways Limited or any third party providing products jointly marketed with American Express. I understand that I can call 1 300 362 991 if I want to withdraw this invitation and remove my name from your marketing lists.

Bit annoying that they opt you in by default.

  • The application has worked fine so far, and I don't know why it didn't work 6 mths ago.

If it all goes well, chop goes my current Citibank Silver WITH annual fee :)

  • aeon, those conditions are standard for pretty much anything you sign up for these days - credit cards, utility companies, etc etc.

  • I have just created a new thread for this:

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/4478

Once you get your card from Citibank (and do all confirmation that it is not spam) please post comments under the thread. There are people who are not sure whether the link is spam or not.
