Epic timing for all those who purchased the HP Microserver!!

Mr. Rep - are these drives suitable for RAID usage?

    • +2

Raid…Green drive is not designed for RAID.
      RAID 0 - not recommend
      RAID 1, 5 YES

    • The HP Microserver cant support raid 5 anyway.

      • On it's FakeRAID chip.. No. But software RAID gives you access to it all.

As to why you'd want to use the limited BIOS RAID is beyond me.

  • need to book/pay online or can just pickup instore?

    • Both way available, but we only have 60 of them in stock, better pay first and secure you order.

  • Good hard disk, I got quite a few of these.

Good price for 2TB, but I've had HEAPS of WD drives fail in laptops and servers.

I recommend Seagate. I've only ever had 1 fail abut 7 years ago. And I've owned more of these than WD, which have had more failures.

    • I have bought lots of HDDs (10+) with most being WD and I have only had one fail and it was stuffed from the beginning. 3yr warranty covers any issues though so it's easy to get a replacement…

    • I've had repeated seagate failures and been sent reconditioned drives (one with the same issues) as a replacements with who knows how many hours service (I didn't check with several of them). The last one I said 'enough' and was able to return it to JB and pay a little more for a USB3.0 WD. NO issues with any of my WD drives in my memory (using computers since before there were hard drives).

Thanks for the replies guys, but I have 450 WD drives at work. Send at least 5 back every week.

I know that everyone thinks their HDD's are the best, cause they have 5 that haven't failed, but trust someone who uses as many as me. They are not reliable.

    • Haha at WD fanboys.
I've had 1 WD fail on me so far.
I've seen someone post "Avoid WD like the plague"
I bought a heap of seagate drives and so far 100% going strong.
I'm pretty sure its "Avoid Green drives like the plague"
YAY for WD, YUCK for caviar GREEN.

  • Where were you 24 hours ago? Doh… :\

  • Bugger. Already ordered 4 for my Microserver from Megabuy at around $84 i think.

From what I've read, they work fine in other NAS devices so I presume they would be fine in RAID arrays. Not sure why OP says it won't work in RAID 0, but I guess that would be an inherently risky path to follow anyway.

Re Seagate - I was going to go for their new 64mb cache SATA 3 drives… but you should probably google for firmware issues first.

    • I have used WD drives in my QNAP (NAS) and it was not good… you can kiss your RAID array goodbye.

These WD drives are great but DO NOT use them if you want to RAID them.

    • The idle time on the drives puts the drives to sleep between uses and this will throw up errors in your raid as the raid thinks the drive has failed

    • Mmm interesting. Maybe I will have to run them as independent volumes!

I guess one way to maintain redundancy is to use one volume as the primary volume, and schedule a periodic backup to the backup volume as the machine will be on 24/7 anyway. Probably cause less wear on the mirror drive as well. As I understand it, RAID1 provides no additional performance anyway.

Thanks for the food for thought!

  • Are these the WD20EARS model? Can we have further details on the exact product number?
    Thanks

    • Yes, wd20ears

  • Getting magento errors on add to cart

    • using chrome

  • Caviar green? I dare someone to eat caviar when it has turned green!

  • Surcharge for PayPal?

  • Good price but I don't think they would work well in my NAS (buffalo LS-QVL)?

  • 50 units sold in a hour, but only 9 positives

    • +1

Maybe if you would put something in the post to give people an idea of shipping prices? That way people who recognise this as a good deal but aren't going to order one can vote positive.

  • Availability: Out of stock.

I was waiting for confirmation that I have a Microserver on the way before hitting this. Should have learnt my lesson already; you snooze you lose.

  • Damn you guys should have supported budgetpc for putting them up at this price… how many hdds did the person who bought the most get budgetpc?

  • -3

well the going rate is $88 so not that big a discount

    • Ummm, 10% off + relatively cheap postage = pretty good discount

  • Giving you +1 despite missing out by 30 minutes

  • i wish the samsungs f3 was at this price, i brought a wd green and it disappears from my computer periodically (all 4 samsungf3's work fine)

  • Dang, I just bought one yesterday from Netplus for $88.

  • Noooooo it's sold out

  • atm its listed for $80 + $8 gst

  • WD Green are so fricken slow. No way I would buy this for anything. The performance loss of a slow drive is not worth the savings.

  • anyone received there hdd yet??
