Is There a Best Time to Sign up for AmEx?

Keen on signing up soon seeing all the sweet deals last year.

Just wondering if they are known to offer particularly sweet signing bonuses at any time of the year (e.g. June for EOFY?)? Or are they usually more or less constant throughout the year?

More or less constant. Bear in mind, there's a major devaluation that kicks in in mid April. Unless Anex compensates by doubling the size of its sign on bonuses, the good days of rorting hundreds of thousands of points from Amex may well be behind us.

    • Thanks for the reply!

Well, RIP us regarding the points. The big $x00 cashback deals should still be active, right?

I find they are much poorer in value compared to a year or two ago. But still worth having a card with no or low fees.

Absolutely. This years offerings have been pitiful. At this rate, the only cashback I'll be getting will be shop small.

          • @Some Guy: sorry, what is "shop small"?

          • @Some Guy: Yeah I ended up cancelling my AMEX

            • @fadeinthemix: Thanks!

you reckon the $100 off $400, $150 off $750, etc. kind of deals aren't worth the card? Or are they not doing that anymore?

@xrailgun: it is $195 for the plat edge card, the last 6 months have been deals that I either wasn't taking advantage of or I was spending money for the sake of spending money.
I can put that $195 in to another card that gives me 75,000 points else where and I can come back to AMEX 18 months later.

                • @fadeinthemix: Very good point there. I assume the 18 months is for you to re-qualify as a "new" member for signing bonuses?

                  • +1

@xrailgun: Yes, I will be new again at 18 months which I can decide again.
It is always best to do the math and do what's best for you though, but I don't factor in a maybe offer in to the equation due to it's a maybe.
If you spend a lot at Woolworths and fly Krisflyer it could be worth it to you.

@fadeinthemix: Precisely what I'm about to do.
