Dell is having 30% off selected XPS systems at the moment. Sale starts today and finishes on Sunday 15 May. This is what you can get for $1,119

XPS 15 Laptop

  • Intel Core i7-2630QM 2GHz Turbo Boost to 2.9GHz
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
  • 8GB DDR3 (2x 4GB)
  • 750GB 7200RPM HDD
  • 15.6" 1366x768 WLED Display with TrueLife (upgrade to Full HD for $198)
  • 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M
  • Blu-Ray BD-ROM + DVD/RW Combo Drive
  • Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030 with Bluetooth v3.0+HS
  • 6 Cell Battery
  • 2x USB 3.0

Just did a search on StaticICE for 15.6" laptops with Sandy Bridge i7, and it's hard to find a similar spec laptop that matches the price. Most people buying XPS 15 would go with Full HD (1920x1080) RGBLED upgrade though so you might want to factor that into the pricing.

Also a similar spec XPS 17 with 1TB 7200RPM drive, 3GB GeForce GT 555M Gfx, 9 Cell battery and 1600x900 17" display for $1,189 delivered.

Also don't forget about the cashback from MoneyBackCo. Regular discount coupons don't work though, as 10% will cancel the 30% off discount.

If only the graphic card could be changed =\

    • -4

If only the whole thing could be changed, including the DELL logo :(

      • -4

        lol

    • Do note this is the upgraded graphics already for the XPS 15. It could have a 525M.

  • +2

The deal is amazing but DAMN are the laptops ugly!!
The XPS brand used to be for gamers and workstation, with geeky or sleek professional looks, but these are neither…

I will +1 though - it is after all, a good deal.

    • indeed its very ugly.

    • +2

      what the ??
      its like grey/silver

whats wrong with that, if anything it looks professional

      • have you seen the previous xps?

        • yes.

i prefer not to draw attention 2 my laptop.

not to mention, "SHI.. that looks sick, lets steal it"

        • I agree with this one, the last funky-hinge XPS was so much sexier. I don't know why Dell took a step back with this design.

      • I like the XPS M1210 (which i own), and the XPS 13" model that came after it. These 15" XPS look boring, like they are suppose to be the inspiron range. It's a slab with a screen stuck on.

        • i bought the xps m1330 because of its slick styling
3 years later, its still going strong and i'm having trouble finding a good replacement laptop that looks just as nice =\

sony vaio SB's (sandybridge) look nice though

    • +1

the old XPS was f-ing hideous.

      • +2

agreed. The one with the wavy crap on the sides was ..bad

  • +8

It looks a little deceiving actually. It says it is 30%, however this is only the case if you order the configuration without any customising.

The discount is really $480, any customisation you do is done at full price which brings down the percentage down.

eg. add 3 year warranty and discount is now 27%

Still a good deal, just be mindful of the extras calculated at full price.

  • +4

You can remove the Gizmo onsite service and save yourself $25.

How does the GT555m compare to the GT 460 in an Asus G73SW?

Not very well according to http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-555M.41933.0.…

I would buy one if they had better video cards…

    • +5

Here's the info on the videocard
      http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-555M.41933.0.…

With 70% of ALL Laptop Graphics cards they are just renamed rebadged older GPU's

The GT 555M is a 2 year old design, overclocked and using better memory

Laptop Graphics cards are a real sad state of affairs when it comes to naming!

In no way shape or form is it anything like the 5xx Series Nvidia Cards on the Desktop… but they name it like it is… how misleading can they be

AMD does the same thing i guess so its an industry problem

      • therefore 460 is better?

    • +3

On the other hand, G73SW costs at least $2,200 according to staticICE.

XPS 17 upgrade to full HD + Blu-Ray writer = $1,330. Big price difference there.

      • Absolutely - but if you need a gaming PC the Dell graphics probably dont cut it

If you could upgrade the video you might be able to get closer to the G73SW but a lot cheaper…

I owned a sandy bridge bugged G73SW - a good laptop but very, very poor battery life when gaming - returned it for a full refund and now looking for a better battery life alternative…

        • +1

for a gaming PC its more affordable to stick to a full size PC tower than seeking out gaming specs in a notebook.

  • Best laptop on the market for that price…

If only I was ready to upgrade right now, they would have themselves a sale.

  • not in the market for a new laptop atm but damn good deal.

  • great laptop for the price, the sound is amazing, but the keyboard is really shit IMO.

  • is 7% moneybackco still available with this offer

    • +4

I believe it is. MoneyBackCo or Buckscoop — whatever fancies you. Just the usual Dell discount coupon codes won't work.

  • any coupons you can use on top of this?
    would really need 1080p screen

edit: just tried using a 10% coupon takes away the 30% discount, so no go

  • +1

    mm pretty good sale,
im just unsure if the gt555m will have the dreaded nvidia defect.

can anyone shed some light on this?

  • whats the difference between these options?

    15.6" (39.6cm) FHD (1920x1080) B+RGLED display with TrueLife™ [add $198.00 or $2/week-1]
    15.6"(39.6cm) HD WLED True-Life (1366x768) with Multi Touch [add $198.00 or $2/week-1]

does that mean the screen becomes a touch panel?

    • +2

I think so. One gives Full HD, and the other one is touch screen. For a 15.6" lappy I know which one I'll rather go for.

      • +1

ok. just seems strange that it offers a touch screen in the first place. its not like its a tablet, and you cant spin the screen around like the old tablet/laptop things.

        but yes, FHD ftw.

also, i have heard that some of these have a matte screen? does it apply here or do you have to call them up?

        • -2

I think he meant you'd be almost unable to see any difference on such a small screen, so no point going from 768 to 1080.

        • you're thinking of tv… this is a computer, of course you can notice the difference.

try fitting two pages of pdf side by side on 768p.

        • Oh yes, you notice it. You'll fit a LOT more stuff with 1080p of real estate. Definitely what I'd get, considering if I actually do get it right now.

  • +2

I love Dell XPS!!!! My XPS M1330 is still going strong after 3 years - after taking one year to destroy my previous two laptops.

BTW you can sometimes bargain the price down when you ring Dell up via telephone sales!!! (got myself an upgrade to 3 years top of the line servicing… I used the servicing a few times in the first year but didn't need it for the last 2, interestingly enough)

    • Your lucky the 1330 was plagued with heating/graphics issues, mine was always hot doing hardly anything

      http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/153970-s…

      • +1

yep, im using my 1330 right now. i had to get my mobo replaced once. but dell did it after my warranty period cos of the extended gpu warranty so that was pretty cool.

its still a good laptop though.

        but this new xps….

      • Yeah, the comp heating up is the only real complaint I have… other than that, I've been pretty rapt with it, particularly in the first 2 years after I bought it mine was better looking, more powerful, longer battery life, faster and better featured than other people's laptops. Had a few issues here and there, but a bit of fussing with the technical support sorted that out.

Anyway I reckon Dell XPS is a pretty good all-rounder. A big step up from their cheaper Inspiron range etc.
If thinking about other competitors though… i can't really be helpful coz I haven't got sick of my XPS M1330 yet

      • There's a class action lawsuit in the US for people who had a laptop with the Nvidia graphics card responsible for these heat issues. I'm also one of the lucky ones with an M1330 that didn't fry. My friend had one that fried before my eyes (after emitting a 3 second "pc-speaker beep of death")

      • replaced my mobo at least 4 times! ridiculous!

good thing i had the 3 year warranty on it

it's good if yours isn't fried. normally the ones with integrated graphics were more stable than the nvidia graphics.

it's a nice looking laptop though, good size too at 13".

Too bad they don't make powerful 13" laptops anymore, they tend to wimp them out, and keep the grunt in 14/15 inch and up. But I find 14 inch and up too heavy.

  • Was just about to go to Harvey Norman and get the Samsung RF511-S03au (they also have 30% off), now that the XPS15 is the same price I'm not so sure. Any feedback on which is the better machine?

    • +1

dell wins hands down, if their the same price

      • +1

Agreed Samsung really hasnt proved itself in the notebook space yet

        • Thanks. However although I've never owner either brand the following implies that Dell reliability isn't as good
          http://www.pcworld.com/zoom?id=211402&page=1&zoomIdx=1

        • I find it hard to beleive sony, msi, acer & samsung are near the top, good luck with whatever you end up with!

        • I personally would only go for Dell or Lenovo. Had bad experiences with Sony, and heard nothing but horror stories about HP.

  • does anyone think it is worth to upgrade the i7 to the other models? or is it really just for those who do heavy video editing?

also another question, since its 30% off, how come adding upgrading things doesn't take 30% off its components as well? assume its just 30% off base then aye :O

    • I wouldn't. With these models, your performance bottleneck will always be the GPU, not processor. The included one will be more than enough for anything, but if you can get a GPU upgrade, go for it.

    • Yeah not really worth it. Those higher models include stuff like Vt-X (or whatever it is) for handling virtualization and a few other advanced features I think.

  • The Higher end version has 2 500GB HDD instead of 1TB HDD
Just want to clarify that ;)

It will be great to put a 60GB SSD and leave the 500GB in there

  • hey anyone know if these gpus will have the nvidia defect?

  • +2

is it just me or is the 17" actually the same price as the 15" but with better specs (and of course the bigger screen)? building the same system on both now and the 15" is apparently costing more cos the 17" comes with everything that the 15 has to upgrade to?

    • +1

It costs $70 more actually, but yeah the extras Dell thrown in (XPS 17 comparing to XPS 15) would be quite a bit more than $70 though.

    • depends if you want a 17" though. price isn't everything sometimes. i know i will definitely not want a 17" because they are huge and very very heavy. the 15 is heavy enough as it is.

so if you are using it as a desktop replacement and never really move it, 17" is a pretty good deal

    • I just noticed this too, the 'cheapest' 17 inch XPS is now, funnily enough, cheaper than the one $100 more than it (after the 30% $510 cash-back), despite having significantly better features.

  • Whats peoples thoughts on the Inspiron 15R for $649

    • +1

Personally I would not bother with an Inspiron. I have an Inspiron 1420 at home and it's quite cheaply made. If you don't need USB3, check out Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 520 (and there's a 10% off coupon at the moment). XPS would be Dell's prosumer line which I think would be better made, although I've never owned one.

    • My current Inspiron is 3.5 years old, no problems with the laptop itself yet. Had to replace the battery and power adapter, though (bought "genuine" ebay replacements for ~ $70 for both, direct from Dell is 4X that). Very happy overall.

  • +3

Its actually $1093, if you remove the unneeded home support.

  • I got an XPS 17 about over a month ago for 1250 and im spewing this deal is out! So look at the new XPS 17 if you are interested in a bigger screen size and you can get the same specs with a larger screen.

I'm not sure about why people think it looks ugly but I personally don't mind the machine at all. It is a bit bulky so it is not that portable but the 9cell battery gives 6 hours for battery life on mid settings. I use it for a desktop replacement laptop. So for a person that doesn't game much and looking for a desktop replacement laptop the new XP17 comes in with $1150 (remove gizmodo thingo, for an i7, 8gig ram, 555m gpu, 1tb harddrive 17.3inch screen)

I haven't had problems at all with my machine but it comes loaded with some pre-installed software (that can easily be removed). The keypad is handy if you need it on the side and the back lid keyboard makings everything look good.

My only problem I've had is that my hands tend to cover the left speaker on the laptop distorting the sound but I usually have external speakers hooked up.

So tempted to buy another one and give this one to a family member…

  • I been using a XPS M1330 for the past 3 years, break down many time, even after warranty, there next day onsite service come and change the parts everytime. Really impressed with the service. Also they give me a extended warranty for 2 years for a price of $300 after 1 year my original warranty got expired, and that even no checking the system. after that I put some warranty claims and they changed, motherboard, processor, dvd drive, hinge pad, charger etc. I changed HDD,RAM as an upgrade also my screen broke down so i changed that as well, so almost everything is still new on my M1330 and I love the XPS.

Its a shame that they changed the looks and there is no more 13" once. Who want that heavy bulky 15" or 17" but still for the price its really worth, but not for me.

    • +1

Agree. I have an XPS M1330. No problems though as it has the integrated graphics (it's just for work). Everything still works great and it's still as zippy as ever. But damn, it's still one sexy laptop. The new ones look hideous. The XPS line has just been getting uglier and uglier!

  • It's worth upgrade to the full HD display (LED backlit). It looks absolutely fantastic and is much better than the standard low resolution display. I love my XPS 15.

  • If you are like me and need a decent laptop but were leaning towards g53sw-fhd (that was at centrecm for $1800 over Easter) because of backlit keyboard, xps now has option of backlit keyboard for $20 so looks very attractive. Asus has better graphic, 2 hybrid hard drives and better looks and warranty but price difference may justify the xps. Pity FHD upgrade is pricey.

    • +1

Don't forget that Asus comes with 2 year international warranty and 1 year accident protection and backpack, gaming mouse and headphones. Interesting that FHD screen upgrade is only $80 on xps 17" but $200 on 15"…

In summary, if you want a 17" the Dell is heaps better value for money At $1300 (after some upgrades including FHD) than g73sw-fhd at $2100 (as it was at centrecom). But 15" is about same value: $1500 for Dell (with FHD) Vs $1800 for g53sw-fhd. For extra $300 you get quite a few extras worth at least that (and better looking machine)

Only catch is centrecom special is over and prices have gone back up (though I'm sure not for long).

  • Would these laptops be manufactured after February 1st? all Sandy Bridge laptops before have the SATA failure problem don't they?

  • has anyone bought this yet?

and used any other coupons? or cashbacks?

  • The XPS17 would have been ideal except for:
    - No firewire port
    - Not full HD
    - Only 2 USB 3 ports

    • You can customize and pay an extra $88 for Full HD.

    • +3

      Lol Firewire.

  • +2

    for people interested

I talked to a Dell rep online and I got the FHD, 9cell, backlit and sound add ons. Rep gave me the backlit for free saving me $20.

So yea, maybe if someone has a better experience post it!

    • so what did ur total come to?

and why didnt u try using the cashbackco?

      • total came to 1470. i have NOT purchased it yet since I didnt have my card on me. but thats an interesting point. does cashbackco apply here? since the rep would need to process the transaction manually, wouldn't the cashbackco link no longer work?

edit: and for 7% is $104. so its way better to not go through the rep and just go through cash back? since im not sure how it works if a rep gets involved

        • yea im not sure about the cashbackco, but an additional 7% would be sick.

so through the rep online u got 20 off?? u should try asking for extended warranty

        • tried. she wouldnt give it to me. so tried playing hardball but no dice.
but will try the cashback instead. if its $20 saving, then it pales to cashback

edit: i just joined cashback. i have no idea how to use this lol. i cant find the new xps 15 and all the prices are outdated? how do i go to purchase this deal through it? clicking the "Click here to visit this merchant and earn moneyback…" just gives me a dark screen and nothing happens

        • +1

For MoneyBackCo/Buckscoop to work, you must finalise the purchase with their online checkout. So I guess it's a "no".

        • hey, are u getting the 15"??

for FHD, u should get 17" instead its better value for money

        • 17" too large
15" is already bordering on that :) but the deal is too good hahaha

        • its up to u, but ud be paying less for the 17" with FHD i think

        • :( my cashback link to dell doesnt work. tried FF and chrome. reported the broken link. hope they get back to me before the deal ends

        • link works for me.

are u clicking on the green banner on the bottom?

          "
Click here to visit this merchant and earn moneyback…"

        • edit: ok, link works! chrome and FF being stupid in different ways

ps. thanks for your help guys!!!

        • keep me updated, i wanna know how the 7% goes.

id prob buy it soon too

        • last question before i buy, will moneyback tell me instantly that its doing something? not saying about the refund itself since i know that takes a while, but that it knows its trying to process it at all?

        • ok placed my order. will let you know if moneyback notices it, and if i get the money

        • 7% off is Pre GST amount.

Also for new members you lose $10.

Still worth trying but the amount saved is not as big as 104.

Also if you are good at bargaining, you might get more off and not have to wait 3 months or feel uncertain about whether it will track or not.

  • Hmm, if I take it out of the country within 30days then I could get another 10% off? So that's $480 off, 7% through money back co and 10% off through custom?

    • thats pretty smart, yea ud need the invoice and the laptop on ur way out of the country but that should work.

    • "if I take it out of the country within 30days then I could get another 10% off?"

      How does that work?

      • claim the GST back at the airport.

    • Its actually 1/11 x 100 = % off.

Also you need to get the actual receipt in time with your name and address on it.

Also you need to lug it around..

  • anyone know how selecting a TV Tuner for $41.80 works? I'd love to have a tuner in my laptop but don't know how they fit a desktop pc card in a Laptop. For example it says they use Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1250. Which uses PCI-e slot.

  • +1

does anyone know if they use the B2 mobo? with the sata issues

    or is it revised B3?

    • I'm wondering the same thing, I don't want anything to do with a laptop if it's got a fault as extreme as the Sandy-Bridge SATA fault.

      • +1

There is ZERO chance you'll get a B2 mobo - the B3's have been shipping for several months.

  • Does XPS have better build quality than Inspiron?

    • +1

      yes

      • Much much much better

  • Thanks Scotty.
I was sure of buying this tomorrow http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256975372390/sony-va…
with 30% of at HN i thought it was a good deal.
But this seems so much better. thoughts?
