Proxies for Buying from US - Please Help

Hi folks,

I've been having problems with an EA game I own, so I complained and they gave me a $20 off code, but it doesn't work. I emailed them again and was told 'oh sorry, it only works in the US and Canada.' Great…

Therefore to actually use the damned thing I need to use a proxy, which is ridiculous. anyway I've never used one before, so and advice or suggestions would be great.

Cheers!

  • A proxy to download something?

What exactly is the "code" you are referring to?

    What precisely "doesn't work".

If you can be a bit more specific, it'll be easier to assist :-)

  • I use http://www.priceusa.com.au/. I found them to be pretty good, but I think they are getting hammered with work at the moment due to the strength of the dollar. The problem with using a proxy like this is that they will charge you 5-10% or a minimum of $15, plus shipping. In this case it's probably just not worth it, unless you are also buying other items as well and the costs are incorporated into the other purchases. Maybe you can try to sell the code on ebay or something, maybe you can at least get a couple of bucks :(

    • He meant a (network) proxy not a mail forwarder

  • Well the code is, as I said, for $20 off at the EA store. The problem is that it's region-locked, so it can only be used at the US/Canada version of the EA store, hence the "doesn't work". Because the site (and program) registers that I'm in Australia, it won't let me use the code.

Thanks for the link endotherm, but it's not a physical product I'm buying. Essentially what I want is a proxy site to trick the EA store into thinking I'm in the US so I can use this code.

    • No, you didn't actually say it was a code for a download from the EA Games store.

What are you going to DO with the $20 credit? Pay extra and download something else?

I am asking because a download via a Proxy is highly unlightly to work very well. Also, you need to have cookies being passed transparently through the connection too. Plus if paying extra you need to be able to deal with teh payment gateway (Paypal or Visa etc) as well.

Try the proxy as mentioned by Jackbob - the same thing can be done in IE from Tools > Internet Options > Connections.

  • If you are using firefox 4, click on the orange button, options, advanced tab, network tab, settings, manual proxy configuration, type in http proxy: 142.35.45.220, port 8080, click ok, you may also need to click use this proxy server for all protocols

    • ^ Try this. If it doesn't work PM me some more info and I might, might be able to help. Good luck.

      • Thanks guys, I'll try out that method and see how I go.

        • It it doesn't work I can probably set up a temporary proxy for you on one of my servers. Shoot me a email if you need it.

  • Its kinda unfair that EA gave you an american code when you live here. Change the coupon (or at least make them fulfill the order since the American shop is prob cheaper-ie. not requiring you to use proxies or whatever)
I know it isnt an answer to your dilemma

    • Yeah the US store is cheaper, I'm sort of working out a deal with them at the moment that should mean they'll honour the codes, it's just a bit of a pain in the rear at the moment.
