That's a nice price, but those sequential reads and writes look v. slow.

For example, Corsair MP510 is 3480 / 3000 MBps and Intel 660p is at $171 with similar read/write speeds.

    • Still better than any other disk HD though.

Where can you find such prices?

      • +1

Idk but this guy must be insane to not think this is cheap.

      • +1

The Intel price was on Newegg.

I've been on the look out for a 1TB NVMe drive, but the cheap ones tend to have slower reported speeds, then at the $210-$250 range you get 2nd div/last years models at >3000MBps type speeds, then the newest hotness is at ~3500Mbps come in at $350-$450.

Hence I've been looking for a deal at the $210-250 region.

Newegg has ~$16 shipping, so the Intel one is $187-ish, but either way that's a great deal. This is also a good deal.

          • @p1 ama: Personally I think that step up is worth it, a bit more for better benchmarks and better reviews.

I've been trying to steer clear of QLC

It's hard to say, it's not an insignificant amount. It's 10% more. I personally agree with you, I'd rather go for the Intel at these prices, but I think they're both fine options.

I've been trying to steer clear of QLC

It's the future. People who still demand higher speeds on NVME drives (whether they actually have a use for it or just like the e-peen) is actually really small. QLC will only become more prevalent as people look for "fast enough" and "durable enough" flash storage for their devices.

We hit the law of diminishing returns with SSDs long ago. I still remember my first SSD, an Intel X25M that I paid over $300 for and it was only 120GB. It was eons faster than any hard drive I had before and I could feel it every time I use my computer. Even the cheapest SATA SSD and the best NVME SSD won't be that different today.

Unless I've stuffed up somewhere the intel is $116usd ($164aud) on amazon us.

How are they slow? This is cheaper than decent SATA drives whilst being 3 - 4x faster.

Bought this from ebay for 200 like 2 days ago :'(

For this price, its more than worth it - you get a slightly faster drive and a newer from factor for the price of a comparable sata SSD. I also wanted to move away from a sata drive and use my M2 slot.

To all who are wondering, in real world usage pattern, you will not notice much difference from a SATA drive. In all the areas that matter, its about par or only slightly better than the MX500s.

  • Anyone tested the write/read speed after the cache is running out?

    • +2

You're not likely to run out of cache in real world usage unless 1) You're writing more than 150GB in one go or 2) down to your last few hundred GBs of space on the disk.

A more real issue is that random writes are darn slow, and in fact, for a bunch of small files, the transfer speed is not much better than an MX500.

What its good at is sequential read and write speeds (which are the advertised speeds). From my tests, your average transfer rate will be 500 - 700 MB depending on file type, size and quantity. 1GB consisting of lots of small files take way longer to transfer than a single file of the same size.

I haven't tested this out with game load times but will report back once I do.

  • Had ordered mx 500 few days back on Amazon. Any idea what I can do with it :|

    • They're different type of drives though. This is a nvme, wouldn't use the same slot as a SATA drive.

  • Would this be good for speeding up the NAS?

    • You'll have to provide more info…

    • If you have an M2 slot for this, probably. Just note that the write endurance for this drive is quite low (around 100TB vs 600TB for Samsung EVO Plus 970), which means that heavy usage in terms of writes will wear out this drive quite fast. Its more than enough for regular day to day use but just to bear in mind.

  • His does this compare to Samsung 860 Evo or QVO in terms of performance and durability?

    • The sequential reads and write are really as advertised (2000MB / 1700MB) but actual use cases don't actually follow this model.

Durability should be in line with the QVO, since it uses the same tech (QLC). The 860 should last longer I believe in terms of TBW.

Whats really good is the price - its probably the cheapest 1TB M2 drive in the market and is a steal for this price. Sadly, the price dropped literally 2 days after i bought it

  • Will a Gen2 PCIe x4 M.2 port bottleneck this drive?

    • No, this drive is not fast enough to even bottleneck a PCIe x2

  • Just bought for my ASUS prime z370-a motherboard
Was using a Sata Samsung evo 860 1TB which is still great
But NVMe ssd does 3-4times faster
    Hopefully it is compatible

  • Anybody know the warranty provided by crucial when bought from amazon? I got screwed by hp when buying from newegg and don't want to go there again…

  • this or 660p?

  • +1

Thanks OP I have been thinking about buying a one for a while to replace my Samsung EVO 850 250GB. Now the wait for it to be delivered

Why is this deal is not getting much attention? For 1tb drive isn't it very good price?

    • It doesn't make sense to me either, great price for a 1TB nvme SSD from a reputable brand.

      • +2

Scratch that, I didn't realise that this is a QLC drive.

    • It's got over 100+ upvotes? That's plenty!
