Can I used this without Foxtel?

    • You don’t need an active subscription to use the Foxtel Now box, just a Foxtel Now login.

      • Do you mean I don't have to buy subscription? Website says " The Foxtel Now Box is to be used in conjunction with a subscription to our streaming service called Foxtel Now, which is a different service to the Foxtel cable/satellite TV subscription. Requires a Foxtel Now Account to activate and use."

        • Well I pasted my comment from the actual Foxtel website.

They also say: You will need a Foxtel Now login when you first set-up the device. If you don't have a login, you can sign up to Foxtel Now here.

Go to the FAQS as the bottom of the page: https://www.foxtel.com.au/now/box.html

          • @danny1213: So this works like Android box or Android TV? I still need to buy subscription if I want to watch Game of Throne?

            • @wxwsh1212: Yes, you will need to pay for a Foxtel Now subscription to access Foxtel content.

              • @handles1: Thanks.

              • @handles1: Does this work as a cheap Android TV box if you don't have or want Foxtel?

              • +3

@handles1: Yes. But you don't need a Foxtel subscription to use the non Foxtel stuff for example Plex etc. Nor do you even need to keep an active subscription to use the device. You just need an active Fotel account login. It's only at first when you create the Foxtel Now login account it makes you sign up to a subscription but you just select the free trial subscription and then select don't resubscribe when trial is over. Then after that if you revert the device to factory default you only need to enter the Foxten Now account details.

I side-loaded Netflix onto mine without much difficulty. Other android apps for Plex Spotify etc. you download via the Play store.

  • +1

Does it support to install app from google play or .apk files?

  • Wow this is even cheaper than the previous one posted here
    Great deal OP!

  • Have people managed to install Kayo on this?

    • It's basically a branded 4K Android TV. I've got Kayo on my Xiaomi Mi Box S via the playstore, so i'd assume it;d be much the same. Hopefully somebody can confirm…you never know with Foxtel and their software team.

      • +5

It's a gimped android tv box that requires a Foxtel login for initial setup, blocks KODI installation, and requires Netflix to be sideloaded rather than installed from the store.
In other words, cheap garbage. Get a Vodafone TV instead.

        • +3

          gimped

If it wasn't gimped it would be fake.

No Telstra device gets sold without deactivating half of it's functionality and adding at least two utterly stupid settings changes that cannot be reversed.

          • @Diji1: Sounds like they practically own the NBN already.

    • Yes, the Kayo app can be installed on this.

      • Will I be able to use all the features of Kayo eg splint screens etc on this? Am I right in saying that that isn't the case for the Vodafone TV?

        • No SplitScreen on the Foxtel Now Box from memory (or the Vodafone TV for that matter, although it's not an officially supported device - yet…)

  • +1

Ahhh, so Foxtel Go is what current Foxtel subscribers have. Which is different to the subscription required to use this.

    • Yep Go is paired with a satellite/cable subscription. Now is a separate month to month streaming only service.

  • +1

Can this record free to air? I read that it can't record Foxtel channels which I'm not a subscriber anyway. Want to replace my PS3 play tv…

    • +3

It can't. It has a tv tuner but no pvr. Buy Vodafone TV
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/415277

      • Thank you :)

      • AFAIK, Vodafone TV doesn't have a PVR function out-of-the-box either.

        • +2

It does have pvr with the last update. It didn't have it when it came out.

          • +1

@Chridim: Thanks for the heads up. Further details on recording here > https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/2714884?p=57#r1121

          • +2

@Chridim: It's still useless as a PVR - can't schedule recordings in advance and crashes when trying to play them back.

            • @ssquid: I just read that in the whirlpool forums too…
It's a really big shame as my other half sets up recording in the morning to watch when he gets home.
Our Play tv setup on the PS3 is getting so old and we have a PS4 which hardly gets used other than its faster-than-ps3 media player.

Is there an option where I can have pvr with a decent EPG and Chromecast built in?

    • Can we use it as a tv tuner? our TV antenna was destroyed in the last hail storm.

      • +1

The Foxtel Now box comes with a built in free-to-air tuner^ so you can watch all your available local channels when your aerial is connected.

So I still need to connect to the antenna.

      • Unless you plan to use it as a workaround to stream live TV online, such as ABC iView.

      • What you want is something that can stream freeview. There are heaps of ways to do it.

  • +2

Does anyone know a loophole or someway we can side load Foxtel Go app android app on to this? Basically want to use the parents foxtel account to watch Foxtel without having to use my laptop via HDMI on the TV.

    • Just cast Foxtel go from your device to a TV

      • +1

They prevent you from casting from Foxtel Go unless you've got a multiroom account

    • I don’t have this, but as it has chromecast, can’t you just cast Foxtel Go from Chrome on your laptop to the Foxtel Now box ????

      • +2

I have found the picture and sound to be out of sync when casting Foxtel.

  • Can Kodi and Prime Video be installed on these?

    • Kodi should be available on Play Store. I have tried to sideload prime video on my Vodafone tv with no luck (only works with some videos) i don't expect to work on this device.

      • +2

I tried to install Kodi from the Play Store on mine and it wouldn't install no matter how many times i tried. I suspect that it may be purposely getting blocked. I don't know whether it sideloads or not.

        • +1

search google for kodi forks - there are others which work..

    • +1

No Kodi, but SPMC should work.

    • Prime can be sideloaded and works fine however the last time I used it was 6 months ago.

  • +6

Has anyone managed to side load Foxtel Go (as opposed to Now) and have it working on this box?

  • Thank you, I will give this a go. We have a Nexus player and we are happy with it but the remote stopped working so right now it is connected with a keyboard. This may replace it.

  • Anything useful if you don't have Foxtel?

  • Can anyone confirm if this deal (https://www.whistleout.com.au/Broadband/News/foxtel-box-deal…) is still happening with purchasing the Foxtel Now box?

    • The combined Foxtel Now Box and Foxtel Now offer is available through to January 31, 2018, but only to customers buying directly from Foxtel's website.

  • Bugger it I'll take a punt on one

  • Wondering if you could use other remote that has voice input?

    • I guess it would need to use Android TV OS commands.

  • +1

Heres a whirlpool thread on how to get Netflix and proper chromecast on these:
    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2735348

    tl;dr
You can sideload the Netflix APK, with version 5.1.3 reported to work fine
Kayo is available on the playstore
Install a file manager app to then allow install the sideloaded APK from a USB stick

    • Pretty sure all versions work fine. There's no compatibility issues, it's just blocked on the Play Store. I installed 6.1.1 last time.

  • Can you use FOXTEL GO account on this ?

  • Has anyone tried casting 'Amazon prime' videos using this or using the Prime vide app from play store successfully? I am unavle to chrome cast prime videos using either of my two chromecast devices (2 different versions from google)

    • The Prime Video app can't do chromecast. But you can sideload an APK onto an Android Box. I use the APK from an NVidia Shield.

      • Could you please share the link or upload the APK file for Prime Video please?

        • +1

Install Aptoide app (market). All apps mentioned above are available for sideloading on Aptoide!

        • +2

Be mindful that the Prime Video app in android is known to have audio glitches in Android 6. I had this, and it was annoying. The problem went away when my Mibox upgraded itself to Oreo (Android 8). Although that introduced a whole lot of other issues, Prime Video is working perfectly on it. Only stereo, no surround sound, but that may be because they don't stream in surround. Video is FHD and of excellent quality.

  • How does this compare to chromecast ultra? Looking to buy kayo but don't actually have foxtel

  • Other than netflix, can you also sideload Kodi on this?
I guess as long as the sidebload is working and not patched by firmware update, any apps could be sideloaded?

  • +3

For anyone wanting to buy this botched Foxtel branded Android TV device: it's not worth the trouble! On Android TV for $24.8 more you get better device overall without any restrictions!
I have 3x Vodafone TV boxes. Amazon Prime, Netflix, Kodi, Plex, Stan, Free to air TV…you name it, works just fine!

    • +1

what version of Prime Video do you use? I have trouble with audio stutter on the one I have tried (4.7.9-googleplay-arm7a) on the VodafoneTV, but it works perfectly on the MiBox2

      • +1

I have the same issue. The latest Amazon Prime version on Aptoide is better, but still not perfect. Waiting for Oreo update to fix the issue. A friend of mine also confirmed that Amazon Prime of the same version works fine, without any audio/video issues on Mi Box 2, Oreo.

        • Yep. When my Mibox upgraded to Oreo, the audio issues with Prime went away. I did not change or upgrade the Prime app - it just started working.

    • +1

Do you mind sharing a link to the android tv ?

    • this is an Anroid TV box mate

  • What's the picture and sound quality of Foxtel Now like these days?

I had it two years ago to watch GoT but the picture quality was not great (slightly better than SD) and the sound was all muffled. Lots of connection dropouts too (on a wired 100mbs fibre-to-the-home connection).

  • +1

I would be worried buying a box that requires you to register before you can use it.

  • so you cant open up google chrome browser and watch foxtel go that way?

  • Not sure if this has been answered but is this a good alternative to the chromecast ultra?

Like does this do 4k HDR and let me cast netflix, stan etc.?

    • Edited … Replied to a wrong thread. I was referring to Vodafone tv

    • +1

Can't cast Netflix, sideloaded it last night and worked fine.

      • Hey champ do you know if hayu is on there?

  • I have Foxtel GO access – What I usually do if I want to watch Foxtel through the big screen is log into Foxtel Live on computer and run a HDMI from my computer to my big screen (acting as if it’s a second monitor from a different room). It’s pretty good, but the quality when blowing up the image can be tainted a bit plus it means the other person can’t really use the computer.

If I buy this Foxtel Now Box will I be able to log in just like I have log into Foxtel Go? Or are people telling me that it’s a completely separate service?

  • Someone tell me why I should buy this when I have a smart tv and nas.

My ozbargain senses are screaming "deal" but I don't know what I'd use it for.

  • Does this still come with a foxtel now 2 month free trial?

  • I am after some advice. I am looking for Android TV Box for a more convenient way (compared to casting straight from my tablet to Chromecast) of watching YouTube videos and Netflix. Probably ABC iView as well for kids. Seems people recommend either one of these:

    • Mi Box
    • Vodafone TV Box
    • Meecool M8S Pro L

I also read a lot of mentions about Netflix doesn't work on those Android TV while all pictures of those products always have Netflix listed as one of the app installed. Am I missing something here? Which device out of those 3 above I can't install Netflix on? Because that will straight be eliminated from my options. I am also surprised that people seems to favour Meecool over Mi Box knowing that Xiaomi is better known brand.

    Thank you.

    • +1

AFAIK the Mecool M8S Pro L is not officially Google certified, so will have issues running Netflix (if it still runs on it at all?).

I have a Mi Box and a Vodafone TV, and would personally go for the Vodafone TV, due to having a FTA tuner, excellent remote (with dedicated Netflix, YouTube, and Live TV buttons), ethernet port, local two year warranty, and aussie power plug.
