  • The Dam Busters ?

NB: Shaving Ryan’s Private is not a war movie

    • I would love to…

I'm so disappointed in humanity now I know that's a real thing.

    • It's an allegory

  • Schindler's List in 4k is worth an infinite amount of $ IMO. Greatest movie ever.

    • +11

I was in one of Schindler's Lifts the other day. Greatest elevators ever…

      • +6

They have their ups and downs.

    • -1

      Greatest movie ever.

It has some gross inaccuracies (i.e. Amon Goeth's house didn't overlook the Plaszow camp), but whatever floats your boat.

    • .
Is the 4K version in colour ?

      • +1

        Yes, both of them.

        • If we’re counting black and white as colours, then Black & White films are actually greyscale. So, 256 colours rendered by 8 bits, or 1024 colours rendered by 10 bits.

  • in the meantime you can watch hundreds of movies for free from SBS on demand

    • You should post it as a deal…

      Orgazmo

Joe Young is a naive young Mormon, serving his mission in LA and needing money to marry his girlfriend. This leads him to a pr0n film set

      Yep, that's SBS

      Is it in 4K though?

      • +1

Orgazmo is a classic made by Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

    • +7

SBS on demand is the LOWEST of the low in terms of quality and app. It’s absolutely disgusting quality.

      • +4

        iView is also terrible quality.

      • Perfect on both my Nvidia Shield (Android TV)and DMR-BWT955GL, using native apps and set at highest bit-rate for streaming.

Plus, the ad breaks appear occasionally at the beginning, and never crash unlike Plus7, 9Now and TenPlay

ABC iView also as good, except I can't switch off closed captions on live TV.

There's one very, very disturbing scene in Saving Private Ryan. You've been warned.

    • -2

PTSD from the movie as bad as fighting in the war.

    • +6

Watching a war movie without expecting to see something a bit hey hey is a rookie error

    • +1

There's more than one, but then again, no sh*t.

It's a movie about the Normandy Landings and specifically the landings at the most heavily defended beach sector on D-Day, so it goes without saying that they weren't using harsh language to secure the beachhead.

    • +2

Shh, no tears. Only dreams now Mellish.

    • The movie's 20 years old, don't think you can spoil it at this point. Also what scene?

      • One on one?

  • Cheers OP :)

  • Any recommendations ?

    • I do have Saving Private Ryan on DVD and Blu-ray

Is it worth the purchase on iTunes ?

      • Yes.

I’ve never watched it, but why should I feel annoyed alone I keep throwing money at the studios for the same content over and over? LOL

But no doubt the convenience factor is great.

    • I remember loving The Patriot back in the day, American Revolution setting with Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger. Wasn't expecting much but was a solid action flick. Rewatched Dunkirk last week, was superb.

  • Is a 4K Apple TV worth it? I just recently got a Sony 4k oled hdr tv and want to experience good 4k content, especially Dolby Vision

Even if you don't live in the 'Apple ecosystem' it's still a great streaming device overall. While the NVIDIA Shield is more flexible (I've owned both), I prefer Apple TV 4K more as an 'all in one' box with official support for all Australian catch-up TV apps (important for the wife) and for its great interface, integration with iOS devices and its great 'match content' feature for synching frame rate + colour space perfectly for judder-free playback.

I mostly use Infuse (paid app) to integrate with my home Plex server, rather than use the official Plex app as it's a little behind in playback capability, especially for HDR. Another downside is that Apple TV 4K only supports Dolby Atmos for certain apps and I'm not sure when, if ever, Infuse or MrMC (Kodi fork) will be able to make use of it.

If you prefer Android TV, then NVIDIA Shield is still the best device out there for that platform. It has some long-standing upscaling issues (1080p -> 4K) still, but at least it can do auto colour space switching (switching from SDR <-> HDR) in some apps now.

If you only want straight up Kodi and nothing else, then an Android box like the Vero4K+, Minix U9 or DIY AMLogic S905D-based Android box is best.

      • I have my PC connected direct to my TV via HDMI 2 cable from its desk and can play 4k HDR (1080ti) just it is very finnicky at times with the settings and it is the last thing I want to stuff around with when wanting to watch a movie. I realised as well that my HDD reads too slow for smooth 4k playback of.. backed up.. files, so I have to put them on my SSD. I used to use Plex, but, once they went to paid for a lot of stuff I dropped out of using it.

And yes, colour space switching is a pain too with PC.

I have used Kodi prior and it was decent, I might try a cheaper option and utilize my back up DVDs better than forking out $250 and money here and there for a digital copy. My internet speeds vary too much for consistent 4k HDR content

I appreciate the well written reply though, thank you

          You're welcome.

You're right about HTPCs being a pain if you have an HDR-capable 4K TV. It's nowhere near as simple as it used to be when SDR 1080p was the pinnacle of video, during the time I used an HTPC for several years.

HDR in Windows is still broken. It's really quite frustrating that a $1000+ HTPC can't smoothly do SDR<->HDR switching whereas a $50 AMLogic box can do it better and with less tinkering. The only real reason to have an HTPC these days is for MadVR playback, gaming, mass storage (if you don't have a separate NAS) or for combined server duties.

If you want the best experience then get a 4K player and 4K discs.

      • agreed, the bit rate is where its all at

        • I do both, although I don't own a 4K disc player :)

I buy 4K UHD Blu-ray, rip them to my NAS with MakeMKV (no additional compression) and then use Infuse or Plex to play them. The only downside with my ATV4K is that I lose Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision, although HDR10 and the usual lossless audio tracks work fine, albeit decoded as PCM in Infuse which is functionally identical. I don't think there's any way to play dual-layer Dolby Vision in either M2TS or MP4 format yet on any streaming device (Apple TV, Android TV, Linux or Windows), although I've heard that the now discontinued Oppo UDP-203 and similar models can play them.

I wish the PS4 pro was a 4K player. One major downside to it

  • Anyone that has experience with it, using an Apple TV, do you have to stream the 4k movie each time, or does it download to apple tv? I've got sub-par internet, so it wouldn't work if I had to stream each time.

    • It downloads in 1080p to your computer but if you want to watch in 4k it only streams from what I’ve been told.

I think they should allow you to download the 4k version if you wish

      • Agreed, that straight out stops me from purchasing. Ah well.

        • 4k download would be big tho seeing the 1080p is 7gb on SPRyan I think

      • Yup. It should be noted that it will only stream in 4K if you have a sufficiently fast connection (I think it was a minimum of 25Mbps broadband?). Otherwise you'll only ever see the 1080p version, like me.

Also, because of the streaming requirement, you can watch 4K iTunes movies only on Apple TV 4K — you'll get a max of 1080p if you watch on your Mac/PC/iPad/iPhone.

        • Was going to get saving private Ryan but I have it on DVD & Blu-ray already. Is the iTunes version better apart from being portable

          • @Twisty: The iTunes versions are generally a bit worse than Blu-ray due to the lower bitrate. I have a huge iTunes library because I'm going digital/streaming-only, but if you already own the Blu-ray I don't see any point in buying it again on iTunes unless you want the added convenience of being able to stream it.

            • @deadpoet: Think I might skip it then, was hoping it was remastered or something
