Silly question . What do you guys mostly use the mini for? I have the normal home and find the sound quality poor.

    • Mini seems poor, regular is good sound.

      • They both sound similar to me, which is pretty average. Two minis can be hooked up together as stereo sound though.

        • If you have four of them, can they be used as a TV surround sound system ??

    • +37

      Playing music via Chromecast.
Wifi lights are cheap now ($20 at Kmart).
Turning TV off Via CEC on the Chromecast.
      Setting alarms.
      Writing to-do lists.
      Check the weather.
Operating RF wall plugs via a Broadlink RM pro remote repeater.
Sending IR codes to the home theatre receiver via the Broadlink RM pro.
Turning on the projector via Broadlink.
Lowering and raising projector screen via Broadlink.
Just set up a routine where if I say "Philadelphia won the basketball game" it switches some lights to red and others to blue (team colours) then plays the team song via YouTube on the Chromecast.

      • +3

Looks like you won't have to use that last feature much longer. Go Raps!

      • wait how do u set routines like that

    • +8

It's a GREAT radio … loud and good sound compared to most radios. "OK Google, play ABC Melbourne".

    • +1

I use mine to control my room. Computer sleep, shutdown, lock, restart, and wake up. Lights. Music to my Bose BT speaker. I'm also going to try and control my curtains when I get some time with nothing better to do.

      • +1

How do you use it to control your computer?

        • +4

Google home -> ifttt -> eventghost -> pc

          Or for waking:

Google home -> ifttt -> server -> eventghost -> pc

          • @[Deactivated]: which tutorial did you follow to do this?

sounds cool thing to do to control the pc

      • I thought Bose on,y worked with Alexa? Or do you chromecast it? I have a SoundTouch10.

Also, would I need a CC to turn on our 3yr old Samsung Smart tv via the google mini?

    • +1

Yeah, Home quality is pretty bad. JBL Link 20 is much better sound than the regular home, is portable, and waterproof. For roughly the same price.

The mini makes a lot more sense than the main home - as it just acts as a microphone/assistant more-so than a high quality speaker.

    • +27

I keep mine in the bedroom so Google employees can listen to me have sex. Jokes, I don't have partner.

      • +5

Don't forget! You can do multi-room audio, so you can link several minis together, spread them around and play music through all of them.
        Honestly the best feature

    • +8

      Use mine constantly for:
      - listening to the news at breakfast
      - adding groceries to shopping list
      - weather at night and during the day
      - kids play animal sounds and the Wiggles game
      - Spotify and my Google Play Music collection
      - Turning the lights on and off or (usefully) to a baby night light (since you tend to be holding a baby when you want that light setting)
      - timers for cooking are very useful especially when hands are covered in flour or something (multiple timers is a good feature too)
      Occasional stuff:
      - translations (language)
      - definitions of words or spelling
      - asking what song is playing when it's Spotify radio
      - conversions (Forex)
      - playing podcasts
      - as a Bluetooth speaker

      • +6

I constantly use it to ask questions:
        - "what does the fox say?"
        - "who let's the dog out?"

        • +1

Hey Google: “I see a little silhouetto of a man”

          Siri takes too long…

      • Hi txchou,

What do you use for adding grocery items to a shopping list? Like what app and what do you say?

        Thanks in advance

        • Google home has a built in reminder list function. just say "add X to my grocery shopping list".

Then I've linked/synced it up to my iOS reminders list using IFTTT. Works like a treat.

    • +3

My 6 year old is constantly asking it questions. How to spell something and random trivia style questions like tell me about pluto.

We also use it to interact with the tv. "play peppa pig on YouTube" or "play cars on Netflix" or "turn TV off" which is great for when you're going to bed and can't find the remote.

    • +1

      dad jokes

    • What do you guys mostly use the mini for?

      What else but…

  • +9

How long do you need to commit for?

    • +18

A month is all you need I'm fairly certain. So essentially you can buy a Google Home Mini for $17.99. Spotify Family only charges $17.99 a month with no lock in contract. So you should be able to just cancel it after a month.

      • +66

        Ahahahahahahhaahha
Use a card without enough money, it fails but still allows you to get the free mini.

        • +52

You have reached the high priest/priestess level of Ozbargainer.

        • +22

          Isn’t that stealing?

          • +8

@dan76n: Groucho (Marx) to judge : "there's only one honest way to make a living".
Judge : Oh, and what's that?
Groucho : I was pretty sure you wouldn't know.

          • @dan76n: Stealing from google who profits millions from our data ?? Google should be paying us for using google home mini !!! They just sell it because people will use it if they had to pay for it.

            • @SrMoure: Banks profit millions from our money.

        • -5

          This didn't work for me

        • -1

          yeah didnt work gg

        • Not stealing - just restoring balance to the Universe. If they can't get this right, they've probably overcharged people before as well.

          • +9

@Janko: What kind of justification is that. If you're going to scam them, at least own what you're doing.

          • +1

            @Janko: Ok, Thanos 🙄

          • +3

@Janko: Hey Thanos. Apple has been overcharging people for decades. May be you can do something for us poor ozbargain onlookers.. :-)

        • +2

For people wondering why it isn't working for them, I used an account that had previously been active with a 30 day trial. I did not sign up through the link. Good luck!

      • How long does it take to get redemption codes? It's taking me to checkout page where it's charging me the original price $79

        • +1

          eh?

          • @John Kimble: In order to fulfill this offer, Google needs to share certain redemption information that might identify you with Spotify, including order status, country, code ID, date of redemption, date of shipping, product SKU, order number, and batch ID

I haven't got that info from Google yet. Though I have got an email saying "your Google home mini is now available".

            • @Pisasud08: In that email there is a link that says "get it now" click on that and follow the prompts.

              • +1

@John Kimble: After trying multiple times, now the discount applied directly. Till now, it was not applying the discount and charging me the full though following that email by clicking "get it now".
                All good , thanks.

                • @Pisasud08: Yep, the "redemption code" is the unique URL in your email…dunno why it didn't work for you initially.

      • reckon it works ok upgrading from standard membership to family for one month then downgrading again? can get it for $5 that way

edit: seems legit. just upgraded and ordered. zero delivery too which is cool

  • Thanks. Registered for mine.

  • Thanks for that! Hopefully it won't take long to get it.

    • I literally claimed mine 10 minutes ago so you should be able to. Just revisit the link 5 minutes after you click register!

      • +2

Yep, just managed to order one. The first time said the demand was high and simply registered my interest, 2nd time it allowed me to order. Thanks!

      • -8

People should really stop using 'literally'so much.

It really adds nothing to the sentence you just wrote.

        • +40

It really literally adds nothing to the sentence you just wrote. Your really's don't do much either. :-)

  • +3

Just signed up and claimed mine, great deal! Thanks.

  • +1

So I clicked on the register link and it said thanks for registering your interest. But that’s it??

    • there is a small button, to REDEEM

      • Got it. Thanks.

    • +1

      I don't see a register link?
It just goes straight to Spotify payment screen, where does it say Redeem?

  • +1

    Legit deal, thanks OP.

  • +1

I get a red error message “Unfortunately, there is no support at the moment to make this type of change to your subscription. Contact our customer service team who can help you further.” ….

    • Is your subscription ‘Premium for Family’?
OP might want to emphasise that bit for ‘existing users’.

      • Yes, turned out it was Getflix dns thing getting in the way. Worked a treat after disabling.

        • Fab 👍

    • happening to me too did you end up fixing it?

      • "At this time, only a Premium for Family plan owner can sign up to the Google Home Mini offer. You can’t get it as part of someone else’s plan."

got it so you have to be the owner.

  • confirmed that it's free. my order was made on 7:27:30

    • And how long till you get delivery confirmation/ shipment advice from google?

      • Order confirmation comes straight away. Delivery expected 3 to 9 May.

        • Got that, however was just worried that if i cancel my sub google may dishonor the order? Do they pre auth the credit card provided to google store at time of order?

          • +1

@Trendyoz: No authorisation on credit card supplied to Google for me.

Just cancel your Spotify sub in four weeks time.

  • Thanks op

  • Registered, thank you OP!

  • +3

Demand has been very high, so it might take a few days for your device to become available! We’ll email you at [email protected] when it’s ready.

    • +1

Said that for me but got an email like 5 minutes later :) :)

    • +6

Re-visited the page and I was able to check out :)

      • +1

This, just click the link again immidiately after signing up

    • +3

How’d you get that email addy???

  • +4

Upgraded from standard $5.99 membership (which renewed a few days ago) to family and it only authorised a payment for $0.01, and i've placed the order for the Google Home already. Nice deal, thanks OP.

    • If you were already into the month of the existing price, did they charge your the difference or what? Still a week or 2 out from thr month end and have premium atm.

      Cheers.

  • +3

How much it worth on Gumtree or ebay?

Not interested in keeping it amd letting google listen to everything im saying.

    • -1

      I think around $45 mark ?

      • -1

Hmm 2.5 months worth of spotify is ok i guess

    • +1

Why not cut the middleman and just stop now.

    • +2

      Less than $17.99.

    • +2

I think your phone might be doing it anyway.

Was talking to my dad about cheesecake and one of the ads on the YouTube app we’re about cheesecake. I have Google maps, translate, YouTube and gmail installed. Only translate and YouTube have mic access

I suspect I might have enabled mic access to one of the apps (probably for dictation)

      iOS here

      • +3

It's plausible but there are so many factors other than realtime natural language processing that would lead to u seeing an advert about cheesecake.

        • +2

Yep, it's possible but the real answer is that they have enough info on us already that it just isn't necessary.

Reply All had a good podcast on it. Facebook specific but the same principles apply https://gimletmedia.com/shows/reply-all/z3hlwr/109-is-facebo…

        • I never see ads for wedding jewellery. My friend just got engaged and her ring had a ruby stone, gold ring, with tiny opals on it (pretty unique piece!). We talked about it a month ago. Only recently, she messages me upon request, a photo of said ring. I then see an ad for it the next day. Can't accept it's a coincidence. I'm not a jewellery nor wedding kinda gal so the fact that this ad appeared when I've never seen that sort before was solid to me.

Ads have also happened after other random conversations of things I'd never usually be interested in.

That being said, I don't really care that much if they snoop. It's just annoying.

        • Eg. your mum or dad Googled cheesecake on another computer on the same WIFI and the ads were targeted to your home's interests, not just your own interests.

          • @HeavenlyHammocks: Well here is the interesting bit. The day it happened was when I visited my brother in Sydney and the Internet was a 4G spintel service that I bought over from Melbourne. Never spoke about cheesecake before

I opened up and fridge and noticed a cheesecake and talked briefly about it, later that night it showed up on YouTube ads 🤷‍♂️

    • +2

I presume you don't own a smartphone then?

    • not much.. plenty of ~$20 ones due to less legit ways of getting these codes around for ~$10

    • You can buy the codes on eBay etc for around $15 so that’s what the units are worth at the moment, nothing more.

    • -3

      Typical Aussie.

  • Nob question, so we need to pay first before registering for the gift ? Can we choose the colour ?

    • +6

      Yes, black or white.
      I'm white by the way

      • Officially it is CHarcoal ( Black) or Chalk ( white )

    • +2

Yep. Charcoal or White is the choice from memory?

      • No red one ?

      • +1

For me it’s black or white

  • +1

Got my email within 20 secs.. nice deal thanks op (existing family membership here)

  • Thank you very much, got mine :)

  • +2

Does this stack with the buy google home mini and get chromecast free?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/451843

    • I was about to ask!!! Can someone try!?

      • +2

        • Ah, shame!! Would've been such an exploit :P

    • Nope. Once you add both to cart promo code is removed.

  • +1

    Verified existing user.

    10/10 OP!!!!

  • +2

Legend, thanks OP! Took like 30s for the email to come through. I swear these devices get given out for free in many promotions.

    • +3

      I wonder why… hmmm

      • +17

To be fair, you're essentially giving them your personal data… it damn well should be free… :P

Google after all is a data company above anything else.
