Mattress Cooling Solutions for a Hot Sleeper/Hot Mattress

Hey everyone,

I've purchased a mattress in a box (LazyBed) and I've been finding that it gets quite hot on some nights as it doesn't seem to be as breathable as traditional mattresses. We've tried using a gel cooling mattress topper by Gisele which has helped a little but I've still been waking up at night from the heat that builds up.

Would any of you have any reasonably priced solutions for this problem? I'm aware of devices like the ChiliPad but it's quite expensive.

Has anyone had any experience with a mattress protector like this
It has good reviews on HN but on product review someone said it was a waste of money.

Thanks for your help!

yeah it's a pretty well known issue with most bed in box mattresses, best to send it back if it is a problem.

    • Unfortunately for us, the trial period has already ended. Initially it wasn't too much of a problem because we had gotten it at the start of last winter. Then we managed with a bit of AC but that was too un-environmentally friendly and costly.

well that was silly wasn't it.

There are special fans called 'bed fans' which are essentially floor fans with a specially shaped duct that blows air under your covers / doona. Started out as a Kickstarter many years ago but is now a commercial thing on Amazon.

You could probably convert a box fan yourself into a bed fan if you channel your internal MacGyver, plus duct tape and cardboard…

    • Oh yeah, I’ve seen a similar device on amazon, could try give that a go if nothing else works. Only problem is that I tend to kick my doona around because of the heat so it might not keep the airflow underneath my doona.
      Thanks for the suggestion!

Bought this MicroCloud mattress topper after being impressed following a recent hotel stay that used this brand.

My husband is a hot sleeper too and finds this topper has great air circulation - which means he now gets a better sleep.

    • Thanks for the suggestion! Will potentially consider it if other toppers don’t seem to do much. I’ve actually purchased one of their pillows as a friend who managed a hotel recommended it.

Waterbed and a sharp knife. Problem solved.

    • Haha if climate change continues the way it has been then I might have to resort to that down the track

IKEA has a great memory foam pillow with cooling gel on one side that's really effective. May help with your mattress cooling search.

    • Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll probably get one eventually but it’s more so my body that overheats (mainly due to the mattress).

Yeah we had this problem a couple of years back, comfy bed but WAY too hot. We found the trick was less covers on top, used sheets instead of doonas and no thick underlays. Eventually we acclimated to it but it was well after the trial period, like a few months. Now it's just about right so if the bed is comfy then hang in there cos you will adjust eventually.

    • Thanks for the reply EightImmortals! I did see your comment about this on the old zzz atelier post. Might have to give that a go and try to adjust to it if nothing else works :)

No worries. Yeah I was concerned too when we bought ours but after 4-6 months we acclimatised and now I need a thick doona and a blanket over winter whereas the first winter we had it I was fine with just a sheet. :)
