End of financial year 3 day sale from Dell. The old trusty Dell Vostro 3500, the i3 model (not Sandy Bridge), is have a clearance sale for $509. Not much can be upgraded for this one.

  • Intel Core i3-370M
  • Windows 7 Pro 32bit or 64bit ($0 option)
  • 4GB DDR3 RAM
  • 320GB Hard Drive 7200RPM
  • 8x DVD Writer
  • 1x NBD Onsite Service

Yes I know it has no dedicated graphics. Good business/office machine.

Another interesting offer is Latitude E5520 for $909! Yes a Dell Latitude for under $1,000. Although that is pretty barely spec'ed — i3-2310M, 2GB RAM and Windows Vista Home Basic! However,

  • Updating options seems to be pretty cheap, for example $77 to get to i5-2520M.
  • $18.48 to upgrade to Full HD 1920x1080 display!
  • No option to upgrade the video card though — so stuck at Intel HD Graphics 3000.

With some combinations, you could come up with a nice office laptop with full HD display, and hopefully better build than Dell XP15.

  • Wtf at the latitude, it's almost 1k and it only has vista home basic!?

    • its a Token OS as its targeted at goverment/corporates that will load their own SOE Operating system. E5520 (we have 30 or so at work) is a great bit of Kit but not as nice as the E6510's with its Nvidia NVS320 Dedicated GFX

      • I've always wondered though why the Latitudes are som much more than the Vostro
Is it build quality or something
They aren't twice as good surely?

        • +1

          Define "good" :)

I have said it in the Lenovo thread, which I suspect that it's twice as expensive because that's how much business are willing to pay.

I have been a Latitude user for the last 6-7 years (work laptops). As far as I can see:

          • Docking stations :)
          • Build quality. Latitude is quite a lot better than Vostro and Inspiron.
          • Screen resolution. 14" gets up to 1600x900, and 15.6" has option for full HD.
          • Connectivity, i.e. legacy ports :P My last Latitude (D630) I think still had COM port :)
          • Stability. That sometimes translate to poorer performance though, however.

For business users they are looking at laptops that can usually last more than 3 years by their staffs on the road. I was quite happy with my previous Latitudes — in fact it was my only computer back then and it's on like 14 hours each day. But these days as I am buying lappies for myself, I just can't justify the price for top of the line E6x20's. E5xxx would be lower grade than E6xxx but I have never used one before.

(and I have also switched camp to Lenovo ThinkPad this year, bought 2 so far :)

  • haha this post is so ionic given I just read the whirlpool forums about affiliate links

Great deal and keep 'em coming!

    • +6

Are you sure it's not covalent?

  • Is the Latitude E5520 for 1200 dollars any good, with 500 dollars of discount?
I5 second gen, 4 GB Ram, 500 GB HDD, 15.6 " Full HD Display

Will love, if someone can share his experience about this laptop.

    • Depends on what you need the laptop for. Most people on OzBargain are getting the laptops for personal use, playing games, watching videos, etc. In that case the Latitude might not be the a good deal.

On the other hand, if you need a solid business machine, with docking station support, and on the cheap end of the scale, then I'll be looking at Latitude E5xxx series and/or ThinkPad L-series.

      • I liked the Lenovo G560 from MLN that was on special last week… again only integrated graphics, and im sure the monitor wouldnt be full 1080…

http://www.mln.com.au/img/pdf/Core_i5_Onslaught_19th-22nd_Ma… - expired couple of days ago though…

obviously not a dell though… (which shouldnt matter too much for home users) no decent discrete graphics either

      • As per my post above - what makes this a Business class machine - aside from docking station support
Cause even for business use double the price for lower specs never makes sense to me
Would be genuinely interested in opinions - Thanks

      • yes, I want this laptop for work. I already have a HP 540 business series laptop, which was ok.
I do software development kinda stuff, some surfing, no gaming
but also I will not be using any docking station.
I love to use my laptop on a computer table with external monitor, keyboard and mouse.
