Microsoft Surface Go 64GB $449, 128GB $629 + Delivery (Free C&C) @ The Good Guys

910
MAY10

Cheapest these have ever been as far as I know! ~$7 shipping, or free click and collect or just buy it in store.

Remember the 64gb tablet comes with eMMC storage ather than SSD, which everybody says makes it dead in the water. My thoughts are if this is a secondary laptop/tablet it shouldn't really matter as much (and unfortunately reviews all discount the 64GB because of the eMMC but haven't actually tried it).

Storage expandable via MicroSD (and 512GB cards have been going cheap recently https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/455189).

Keyboard and pen are separate, but also 10% off.

Kudos to original 10% off post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/455645

Nothing wrong with the 64GB version. Runs pretty well, this isn't the same speed stuff as the original Surfaces.
Write speed is slower, but this is just synthetic. For the use cases I reckon people have for this device, I doubt it's a major impedance.

p.s. pet hate, the word "memory" being used for storage :) sorry I just have to call it out when I see it!

Seconding this reaction. My 64GB surface go runs just fine. Windows Central has a review of the 64GB vs 128GB surface go corroborating this; they see hardly any noticeable difference in speed.

    • Fixed that 😂

Forgive my ignorance -?eMMC vs SSD. Is it really a massive issue?
    The above posters suggest no.

    • +1

This is from the Windows Central review:

      CrystalDiskMark (higher is better)
      Device Read Write
      Surface Go (eMMC) 260 MB/s 145 MB/s
      Surface Go (SSD) 1,185 MB/s 133 MB/s

So the numbers don't look great, but the thing is in real world usage it's hardly noticeable

  • Could this thing run Lightroom? I only want it to edit photos on.

    • +2

yeah it can. Don't expect any level of powerhouse performance though.

    • +3

Mobile phones can run lightroom. This will be fine :)

      • +1

Yeah I'm thinking that, I use it on my phone only issue on the phone is the screen size. Half the time I do a better job on my phone though lol

  • +1

Is it more powerful than iPad Pro and can it run games? More powerful than switch? I’m not to tech savvy sorry.

    • +2

No, you shouldn't be picking this up for gaming. At best, you can play light games like LOL, Dota, CSGO, rpgs or emulate gamecube games.

The ipad is the strongest, but no one is developing proper games on it. It gets good ports once a while, like Civ6, but it still ain't a gaming console, despite its amazing specs.

Or get an Android tablet and have the best of homebrew and mobile gaming.

        • I don't think there's any post SD 835 tablets, which isn't strong enough to run wii games.

And is playstore games on par with Apple? I've been out of the scene for a while, but I feel like Apple is straight up better there.

Edit: that being said, you can afford a huawei/xiaomi tab and still afford the switch for the same price of an Ipad pro.

          • @Wonderfool:

post SD 835 tablets, which isn't strong enough to run wii games.

SD 835 is "close" (10-15% less) to the Tegra X1 performance (which is what the Switch uses) so I assume it could do Wii emulation

And is playstore games on par with Apple?

            Mostly

that being said, you can afford a huawei/xiaomi tab and still afford the switch for the same price of an Ipad pro.

            Or get a Galaxy Tab S4 10.5

            • @serpserpserp: At 20fps, sure. Switch games are optimised to use the tegra gpu.

I mean, if it's just one device for simplicity, sure, but it's no switch, that's for sure.

              • @Wonderfool:

but it's no switch, that's for sure.

I'd say better than a Wii though.

    • Couldn't this run an Android emulator such as BlueStacks?

What’s people’s experience running windows 10 with only 4gb ram? I’ve only really used windows 7 and chrome with a lot of tabs makes me think 4gb ain’t enough.

    • Exactly what you would assume. Fine, if you only wanna run lightweight applications. As a word processor, general video consumption or light browser. You won't notice a problem. Try and do multiple things at a time or run more intensive apps? Yeh, it will slowdown significantly.

My thoughts are if this is a secondary laptop/tablet it shouldn't really matter as much

My thoughts are this is rather optimistic.

The device is going to be slower than fast spinning disk for loading times and constantly being held up by hitting swap file due to 4GB RAM. This is annoying enough using slow SSD such as the Surface Pro devices but it's going to be worse using this.

    Unless I'm missing something.

I don't remember the details, but basically it's a super efficient Celeron, so you are to expect a huge jump in battery life. It's designed to be 9 hours on sim data device, for your spreadsheets, coding, online learning, and Netflix needs.

Like to share my experience with the Go. My advice is don’t get it it is very underpowered and some apps are very clunky on it such as kodi/Plex client. It Isn’t very fluid but can handle basic office work. I swapped mine to the pro 6. My Go lasted 2 weeks before I went for the Pro. Pro to me is a better device even with the price. Just buy the bundle with the keyboard works out a few hundred dollars more but a more usable device.

  • Ooft, just paid $700 for my 128gb version from JB. Both them and Good guys told me they couldn't do 10% off as it was already on sale.

For anyone wanting to use it for a light working machine I'm really enjoying it to just browse emails/watch media. Definitely not a primary machine but if you're just going to be casually typing, checking facebook or watching netflix it's really good. I linked it via my logitech mouse to my computer and switch between them as needed.

    • Should have gotten from HN for $628.2 mate.

      • Weird, I got the code but it didn't work for me when I tried.

        • I believe online code and store code are separated. Better off just get the online code and pick up in store. My store code does not work in the checkout page as well.

          • +1

@linhlink: Haha, would do if I thought JB would give a quick refund but I've opened it. Good advice for next time though

  • Is the keyboard really $200? Are they for real!?!

    • I reckon get a Galaxy Tab S4 on sale and buy the $160ish keyboard cover thing and you'd have a better device. Depends if you really need windows.

I'd only get a Surface for playing FTL on the go! If that came out for android I'd be pretty pleased.

  • This should be great for a netflix commuting tablet.

A tiny bit cheaper but longer offer with Harvey Norman and their Surface uni student offer: $698 - 10% = $628.2
    HN: https://www.harveynorman.com.au/new-microsoft-surface-go-int…
Education offer (Need .edu email): https://www.harveynorman.com.au/eduoffer

but better off get the keyboard and pen with this deal tho, I got the keyboard for $70 and pen for $90 from ebay and gumtree.

    I got mine last month.

  • Not sure if Windows 10 minimum requirements (up to 32gb) would apply to the Go but something worth considering…

    https://www.extremetech.com/extreme/290401-windows-10-now-re…

  • I go this when it first came out , and got rid of it. Too underpowered and slow.

  • Bought the 128GB one from GG. It's pretty good for light gaming, e.g. into the breach, retro emulators and browsing. I have the surface pen but not the keyboard

Accessories are 25% off for Surface products if you have good guys commercial access.

    • Damn, I need the keyboard still. Do you have to call them to get a login? I have an ABN and work freelance.

For the price, better off to buy the iPad 128GB (5th Gen) for much cheaper as per this deal… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/455809

iPad isn’t running Windows my friend.

  • for a site manager out in the field doing basic things like outlook and internet explorer, will this device cope ok?

    • +1

The Surface Go comes in various specs, I think for field work you'll want one with LTE (4G mobile network). The 64GB edition should do the mail and internet job just fine.

      https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/p/surface-go-for-business/90…

The light weight and long battery life are big advantage, but if it's going to be subject to getting knocked about it is easy to damage the screen. There are protective cases available for the Surface that offer very good protection but do add to the weight and bulk of the device.

You'll also need to add in the cost of the Type Cover to make it a functional device if you are writing many emails.
