They switched recently from Optus to Vodafone, so not so good on reliability.
Also the post is a little misleading, when first read it looked like a VoIP deal, it doesnt say mobile anywhere.
cheap
yeah they should change the title to Sim plans.
They use the vodafone network now…yeah thanks for the info..
I found this link as well regarding the network changes

"PennyTel did not return an emailed request for comment. Calls to the company's listed phone number went unanswered." — Sounds like our PennyTel!
Pros
46c Untimed
Standard National voice calls
to landlines & mobilesThe Go-Local plan also beats TPG's PAYG plans when you take into account the extra $12 saved a year. However, there is no 50 megs a month free.
FLOP A $2 non-usage fee applies each month if no charged services (calls, sms, data) are usedSolution:You must remember to turn on GPRS each month to browse google for a few seconds to save $1.96.
The Infinite plan may be a flop as it only costs $45 with Vodafone, but that plan does not include international destinations.
Vodafone Untimed = 1 or 2 minutes at best before your line will dropout. Well that's across a significant proportion of metro Melbourne. Amazing how their maps only show dead spots a week or so after you inform them, and not before. At least direct with Vodafone they will give you a rolling 3 month relief from your monthly charges if you complain enough.
vodafone = fail for me
why is normal pricing a bargain, anyways?
Check out the Whirlpool Voip forum before signing up for a Pennytel Sim. Chances are you will then give it a BIG miss.
Whingepool is a vortex of negativity you don't have to look far to find someone complaining just about everything.
Avoid these people like the plague, non existent support & horrible service. Not worth paying any money for. Read more about the problems here:

I have to negative the deal after reading whirlpool threads.
The replies are far more informative
Used these guys for a while. worst support and voip servers Ive ever experienced.
Stay away.agree..
asked for a credit coz their network was soooo unstable that couldnt make any calls!
i was paying monthly fees for nothing!
kept on emailing them but they reply only once a month.. telling me they have escalated the issue.. BS!
I've been using their VoIP at home for nearly 3 years
recently it was so bad I just turn away to other provider!called their support and they can't do any fix on the network problems
billing was alright, but it sucks for "no call if credit below $2" (hey, that's my money!)
and the Freedom plan deducted $ but will only refund the free calls credit..NEXT MONTH!(all the details above is regarding to VoIP, not this mobile plans, but that's their services)
Avoid Avoid Avoid!!!!
Pennytel service + Vodafone network = Epic fail!!
As advised above do read the whirlpool posts prior to signing up. I hadn't so paid the price a year ago..Here is my experience….after buying the $299 Galaxy tab I wanted some cheap data without a contract, so i was thinking about Pennytel or $1 PAYG on TPG. In the end i joined Pennytel as it would be cheaper if i used more than 300mb a month, and because they dont charge the $20 mobile deposit or SIM shipping fees. Also with my 850Mhz telstra tab, i can get fast internet most of the time on the new voda.
Im getting the 1gb of data for $8.88/month, and I additionally joined their $0/month Go local SIM plan just in case I need to make any emergency calls or text (11.5c a minute, 11.5c text). So far so good. I did call their customer support once… and yes it was horrible, I ended up telling the customer rep what to do coz he didn't know his own plans. lol. but once data was activated, i haven't had any issues.
You are better off just use the data. Even Vodafone is way better than PennyTel.
PennyTel's call rates may seem cheap at first.. but if it is anything like their VOIP, prepare to make multiple calls just to get through properly (and have each attempt charged).Their "untimed" VOIP calls are also rather interesting… they tend to just drop off. 80% of the time when I made those untimed calls, PennyTel just dropped the calls after a while - the other 20% of the time were me calling the person I was talking to before again, explaining to him/her that I wasn't the one who hung up on him/her - it was the VOIP provider - probably does not really want to offer untimed calls. It was not unusual for me to spend 40 cents for a local call (multiple attempts + drop offs + call the person back) - after a while, I realised I ended up paying more than if I used Telstra for that local call.
Still have some PennyTel VOIP credit remaining - but don't want to use PennyTel anymore - too much hassle and waste of time.
i made a few calls and i had no problems. its like any other reseller of vodafone or optus. I dont know about their VOIP, never used it (i just use skype using my data). Data so far has been excellent.
As for service…currently, they are having a technical glitch on my account where they arent recording any of my calls or data usage. win!
Pennytel has the worst customer support I have ever encountered. Their support people have absolutely no technical knowledge or troubleshooting skills whatsoever. Strongly advise staying away from any contracts with them.
they also closed an account of mine a few years back after i hadn't used it for a while and the STOLE all my credit… after a few emails back and forth, they just stopped responding…
I've NEVER had such BAD SERVICE from any service provider ever !!!
Who cares about price if you get poor service and poor coverage. Mobile coverage is one area where you get what you pay for.
Has this place turned into Whingepool?
If you were to look at Whirlpool forums for guidance you'd never use any company.I've been using Pennytel for home VOIP for 4 years,
Their service is no worse then others, in fact I would say that compared to my experiences with Telstra (work), Optus (work & personal) TPG (personal) & Virgin (personal & family) customer service is far better then any of them. But it comes down to how often you use customer service. As for a bargain, yes it is, but it's not new. But remember they now use the Vodafone(fail?) network. So that might limit some people.
After I got the samsung galaxy tab I also bought PennyTel's Go Local plan with the 1G data, so I am paying around 8 bucks for using data on my tab and a backup phone number in emergency. I never had problem with it. Having say that, I never really used the support tho. But I am loving my plan so far, because I make international calls quite often and I always blow my Virgin $49 Cap ($2 per minute???? what a rip!) So whenever I gone over with my virgin cap, I just use Pennysim to make calls, its much cheaper that way!
Their service is no worse then others
they're the only ones i've used that have ever stolen my credit… that easily rates them the worst for me…
spend 3 minutes reading the feedback in the whirlpool threads and you wouldn't go near them, not even for free…
Pennytel support is virtually none. It is very stressful dealing with them.
no more dunnytel!
-1 for their non-exist support
For the sake of discussion, what about this mob, http://hellomobile.com.au/?home.
Would be interested in hearing anyone's experience with this prepaid plan.
