    wow, cheap cheap cheap!

but… usual caveats apply to department store bikes… assembly, maintanence problems… etc etc

I bought a $250 Repco mountain bike from a local BigW store 2 years ago. The bike had an inherent fault as the front forks were misaligned and caused the brake pads to continuously rub on the discs. I called Repco and was informed to take the bike back. BigW would not refund the sale, but instead said they would fix it.

When I picked up the "fixed" bike the front wheel did indeed spin freely. I was about to ride off from the shop when I tried bouncing the bike up and down to make sure the front wheel was secure. I was amazed to see the wheel wobble sideways in the fork. The 'repair' consisted of loosening the quick release latch so that the wheel spun freely, but also would have come off or jammed on the first bump in the road. I kicked up a fuss with the store manager and was given an instant refund.

Moral of the story: bike shops cost a bit more, but the mechanics actually know how to put a bike together and service it.

  • So tempting but don't know much about bike, is this a decent bike? I have a mountain bike at home already.

i'd never order a bike online, you need to actually sit in it first to see if it suits your riding style…

      • Ideally, yes…
So many great bike deals recently!

        • Plus, you could just go into your local BigW for a sit on it anyway before ordering! :)

    • if you're not going to do many kms, it's fine. other option is buying a well maintained second hand bike….
but $250 is a cheap way to see if you'll enjoy it and then you can buy something decent

      • Are the specs ok? The link below seems to be mixed but at this price, what do you expect :).
        http://forums.roadbikereview.com/showthread.php?t=221153

        • specs are good, for the price..
There's nothing special about any of the componentry, but it'll get the job done as a runabout.

That forum thread isn't really relevant, they're talking about 2300 downtube shifters (ie old school style). These are STI shifters (ie change gears using the brake levers) one level below Sora at the bottom of the STI range.

    Where's the WRX badge?

  • 99% assembled?

Would this be suitable as a commuter bike? Could you fit a basket or pannier to the front/back?

    • +3

If you don't ride much I would stick to flat-bar bikes, which allow a more comfortable sitting position, and lower gears for hills.
This bike is more suited to someone who rides a bit already and wants to get their first racing-style bike.

As a commuter bike, maybe, but I'm not sure if there is room for mudguards. It looks like it may be for fair-weather cyclists only. And does not appear to have bosses for attaching a rack, so you'd need one that clamps to the seatpost.

    • +2

      99% assembled?

to save space in shipping the pedals aren't attached and probably the handle bars are turned 90 degrees

      • +2

Better than most department-store bike that come Ikea-style, with a Chinglish instruction manual that is generic for all bikes.

        • Chinglish - perhaps you are onto a new language?

        • +2

Actually Wolfy, linguistically (academically) speaking; Chinglish is regarded by some as a genuine sociolect! :)

    • it doesn't look like there are eyelets to attach racks for panniers.

Tempted to use it for the bike trainer, although think i may just use the ferarri

I brought one for $380 earlier this year, I thought it was a good discount then!

The rear tube that came with it blew on the first or second ride but tubes are <$10 anyways.

Brakes and gears needs a little adjustment when you first unpack it.

Handle bar tapes are white, it turned grey on my first ride. Use gloves and they'll be fine.

The seat doesn't seem to tilt up and down, only forward and back. Straps on the pedals can be clumsy, it's better with a shoe that has a pointy front. Maybe that's normal, I don't know.

Everything else is working fine. Many times lighter than a mountain bike. Still feels new after hundreds of kms. This is the cheapest STI bike out there.

It's got the same frame as normal bike, you can fit whatever bags/baskets you like on it. I have small handle bar bags on mine.

  • very nice bike for the price.

especially compared to other bikes of this reduced price.

    • EDIT: responding to the wrong link!

Don't forget the BDAY5 coupon code!

    • For $5 off?

Yep, better than a kick in the a…

  • Anyone else getting a website dead error ?

    • I'm getting the page, but lists as "Currently unavailable online and in store." for all 3 sizes.

    • couldn't get there…

  • DiamondBack used to be a top brand didn't they?

    • Emphasis on the word used to…These days there're a top Kmart brand ;)

As people have mentioned, its a good price for the parts and will be fine to ride on casual weekend rides on bike paths etc…

Wouldn't be using it for commuting and or anything more than the occasional ride. Would be best if you knew someone who was a decent bike mechanic to make sure everything is properly put together. A mate of mine used to work for Big W and assembled bikes…trust me you don't want to be on that thing on the road…

Personally I'd save a few hundred dollars more and buy a decent second hand road bike with Sora or Tiagra gearing.

    • +2

No, but they are pretty high in snake rankings……

    • +1

Diamond Back was once a respected brand, but now it's in the same stable as Repco, Malvern Star, and Dunlop. It's just a sub brand of Pacific Brands, outsourced to the lowest bidding producer in China. Cynical view? Yes, but it's also true.

      • err Malvern Star is making a comeback… You'll find decent specced Malvern Star bikes in your Local Bike Shop nowadays, bottom of the range is around $700-800, top of the range I think is around $2000!
Definitely still lower end, but no longer in the category of "Department Store bike".

  • Expired? On the website it says 'Currently unavailable online and in store.'

  • yep looks like their gone :(

  • Subaru Technica International LOL

really need this bike, puttin on so much weight, fat bastard lol can i have a free one cos im broke ha

  • Pretty keen on getting a bike for road/footpaths. Would this be suitable or is this strictly a road bike? I.e. will a little bump damage the tire/bike in anyway? Could I put a slightly wider tire on there?

    Thanks for posting!

    • i don't think it is available anymore.

    • I think it would do the job but a mountain bike would be more suitable or a hybrid bike. Right now I'm riding one of those cheapo kmart bikes with shock absorbers. And they really go to work on footpath rides.

      • Foolish response.. a Road bike is superior an every respsect to a Mountain bike for riding on roads..
Shockers are energy sapping both in weight and in soaking up pedalling energy!
Unless your roads are potholed horror stories, go with a roadie! You'll get there faster and with less effort.. just don't expect a cushy ride!

        • You'll get there faster and with less effort.. just don't expect a cushy ride!

If he wants that he will drive a car. No point in a bike if it isn't fun. All bikes are slow, road bikes just slightly less so :-)
Sometimes the slow way is the best way.

        • +1

You can ride slow on a roadie!
You just don't have to pedal as much!
I can coast the full length of my street with a single rotation of the pedals.. My girlfriend on her MTB with slicks meanwhile has to pedal the entire way to 1)achieve the same speed and 2) maintain that speed.
MTB's are great for off-road but you're mental riding one on a smooth tarmac I reckon!

  • this is an extremely good deal for those after a road bike, and this is a DBR, an actual reputable brand, not some crappy kmart or aldi job (but has been downgraded according to posts above?)

buying a more expensive bike with sora/tiagra is not going to offer the commuter any extra benefits IMHO. Shifts might be more accurate and faster but these aren't things the typical commuter really cares about.

    • Diamond Back are now a KMart/BigW brand, albeit the top of the range KMart/Big W Brand…

  • +3

    STI? That's unfortunate.

    • +1

I think it stands for Shimano Total Integration
I was alw3ays taught STD anyway and that was back in the days where that also meant a long distance call

  • I dont think BigW actually have this one in store, couldnt see it.

  • I like the look of the mountain bike, thoughts on it for the price? ($248)
    http://www.bigw.com.au/sports-leisure/bikes/bikes/adult-bike…

Thinking short rides, couple of KMs at a time (footpaths/parks and some roads), and maybe setting it up with a bicycle trainer.

  • Might be better off getting a 2nd hand bike from bikeexchange

    • ahh k I'll check it out.

  • Got one of these b4, i still ride it 2 work!!!

  • Just bought some off the website.

Seems that only Large are available.

  • M size is available.

  • yay they're back in stock, just ordered one.
i got the price down to $245 with delivery, i think that's as cheap as i can be…

    • How did you get it down to $245 inc delivery? Wots ur secret? Please tell….

      • no real secret, the bday code plus staff discount. i'm sure someone else will find a even lower price…

        • How did you enter a staff discount code? o.0 My sister has one but I had no idea how to do it.

sign up and enter it in the field

  • Just got this bike today. it's quite an upgrade to the $100 bike i had a few years ago, however is missing a lot of the extras such as bottle holder, kickstand, or a bell. haven't had too much time on this thing, the only thing i can see would be a problem is the pedals, as they are the racing strap in type, and i don't have the cycling shoes.

  • back on sale for $300
