    The keyboard doesn't even work…

    • explain, I thought this was a working C64

[edit] Ah I see, well that's a bit misleading.

    • I think they are making a full size model with working keyboard (I assume still emulation, I haven't looked in a while)

  • +3

Yeah I saw this when they first released and thought what a shame.. I guess it won't require you to type LOAD"$",8 to startup. Will just have a menu like the NES mini has to launch the pre-loaded games. I would say stick with a R-Pi for that price.

    • +11

      LOAD"*",8,1

      • +2

My memory failed me.. It's been a while.. hehe

        • +1

LOAD"$",8 will bring up a directory listing of what's on the disk, so you probably did type that a lot if you had disks with multiple games on them or pirated copied disks missing labels etc.

          • +1

@LowRange: Wasn't it one game, multiple disks ;)

            • @John Dough: And load"$",8,1 did load/ran the first program /game on the disk. So it could also be used for disks with multiple files.

          • @LowRange: Not it loads the directory listing.
You still had to enter "list" afterwards 😉

  • 2nd joystick hard to obtain??? Costs as much as the unit itself….

    • Yep, bought a couple from a UK eBay seller but yes, not cheap :( IIRC they were pretty close to the cost of this entire pack ie. approx $40ea but that was about 12months ago.

      • Just had a quick look and they still are. Very limited sellers.

        • Maybe just buy one of these, keep the joystick then sell off the unused/NIB console for $40?

          • @SteveAndBelle: Who would buy one without the joystick?

Would you buy a pair of sunglasses a fraction under sale price without the lenses?

  • +1

Pretty sure I read the other day that they're going to release an updated version with a working keyboard by the end of the year

  • +1

You can use USB pads, USB keyboard and load games off USB stick. I already have one and think for the price they are great as a plug and play device.

    • That seems like a lot of USBs, the picture only shows 2 ports?

      • I use a USB hub, it's really not that hard and makes a great replacement for my original C64.

  • Great price - I grabbed one recently from Amazon US directly (as wasn't showing via the AU site) for ~$62 delivered. With Prime membership it's a no brainier if you can find something else cheap to add, and still good at $65 delivered anyway.

Mine's still boxed up - must find time to get it out and load up some gems - Commando here I come!

I don't think NTSC matters as you can switch it - don't they have PAL and NTSC modes?

EDIT - this is in the wiki:

"Pixel graphics in 4:3 format with CRT filter and PAL or NTSC mode by 50 and 60Hz."

    • +2

Isn't the NTSC version superior at 60Hz? No one is using CRT anymore

      • +1

I only commented on the NTSC thingy given the OP's description up top of the post.

        As above:

"Great price to have both versions if you don’t already have the ntsc version. Have to buy another item for $1 to get free delivery with prime."

Other than a variation in the packaging rating symbol (if you're a collector), I'm not sure there's any reason to buy one in Oz, and one from the US.

      • Considering we all played the original c64 in PAL I dont see the problem. NTSC is simply 10 extra Hz at the expense of some extra lines, so while its a bit faster it also doesnt have as many lines on the screen, so you are missing some resolution. Not sure how that impacts yhe c64 mini exactly, you could try to google that I guess. If speed is not an issue with such an old system and games, PAL may be considered better

Shame there’s only 1 joystick. Memories not the best but I don’t remember using the joystick a lot. I seem to recall using a gamepad similar to the NES gamepad

Edit: I have the urge to play some c64 now. Off the top of my head I think I can remember summer games, international karate, ghostbusters, boulder dash, maniac mansion, rock n bolt and snoopy (probably not the most popular game but I’ve still got that music stick in my head)

    • +3

I don't recall using anything but a joystick on the c64 - was there ever a more 'gamepad' style controller? Man, I have fond memories of my original system… Wish I had kept it - my adolescent self didn't value it and probably flogged it off for $10 in a garage sale :(

      • the better joysticks were ‘Quickshot’ brand. But I don’t remember ever seeing a gamepad style controller.

  • Was going to grab it using an Amazon Prime trial but it's still charging me postage even after I added another item?

    • Me too and I'm paying for Prime
I have no idea how to fix this, I've added a $3 item and still won't let me get Free Shipping

    • I was curious about that because it’s a US fulfilled item.

      • Read the prime quote. International orders over $49, so does the extra $$ to make $49 also has be an international order?

        • No idea with that one

          • @Twisty: I couldn’t find another international order to test it but buying 2x c64 gives free delivery so I think I’m right

        • Yes. Has to be also international. And looks like the ship together so my order (not this) was 76c short. Added something else to make the $49 and that pushed delivery back 8 weeks.

  • Mine's still unboxed at home, and I'm yet to check. Can you add another joystick to these for 2-player action? If so, where do you get them? I'm thinking it's probably almost cheaper (at least more cost effective) to buy a second system than just pay for a controller.

  • …Remember the 'cassette tape' reader ? Where it would take ages to load a game and theres like a 20% chance that there would be an error, you had to rewind the cassette and start again…
..Then later on there was the CD drive, where one would buy single sided disc and then cut wedges in them to make them 'double sided' LOL

    • +3

I only ever had the tape reader. Got lots of exercise as a kid playing computer games because there would be a good 20 minutes at least to kill running around outside while you waited for your game to load. Then when it failed you'd flip over the tape and try again.

    • +1

No CD drive but there was a 'floppy' drive.

      • +1

That floppy drive was massive! We dragged it to Bali to get the duty free price - it was like taking a brick on holidays! Someone mentioned the sound in another thread - remember the sound it made when it was reading discs?!

    • "Then later on there was the CD drive.." You are thinking of the floppy disk drive, C64 was long before the CD age ;-) . First hey had huge floppy disk drive (almost same size as the unit itself) and later version came with about half the size- but still just as
      loud…

    • Sorry - I mean Floppy drive …LOL…

    • Did none of you guys have Turbo Tape?

  • Ill stick with my original c64/c128/amiga gear, these things are awful.

  • Sorry stupid question. But how do you get these into your Amazon.au cart? (at this price)

    • 'Add to cart' button :)

      • Nope, if it was that easy I wouldn't have asked. But thanks anyway.

If added on Amazon.us it does not show up in my au cart, if on Amazon.au the price does not show up.

If I log in on Amazon us it tells me that it can not be delivered to Australia…

        • +1

I just checked for you and seems you're too late to grab it - looks like out of stock from Amazon as a seller…

          • @fookos: Thank you. Was wondering what the heck I was doing wrong.

  • +1

    very poor performance.
I'd wait for the Amiga 500

    • +1

      Amiga was a game 'changer'….

      • It pretty much did perfect conversions of arcade games at the time.

    • +1

Are they doing an Amiga mini?

      • +3

I hope so. That would be an insta-buy x2 for me.

    • +1

      Just use WinUAE or similar!

      • Yep. That was what I used for my reruns of Hounded, Sensible World of Soccer and Pirates!
