    Even better, consider The Sqair.

    • Interesting marketing, reverse psychology right there, that those as this product calls hyped up, expensive full of nonsense products, companies use. Best part is saying how they have fancy design that's supposed to be expensive, what you're actually ripped off for and they brag about fancy wooden legs lol… Boy oh boy…

If you take the time to read their blog, you'll find it's not "reverse psychology" at all. They're a social enterprise dedicated to making clean air affordable. They publish all of their data and their tests are completely reproduceable.

This had me interested until I saw the shipping cost …
Is it really $107 (per unit) to ship the Sqair to Australia?

          • @hellrazorone: Looks like delivery is cheap in countries where they have a distributor. They don't have one in Australia :(

had to login to warn ppl about backing a kickstarter project.

you might paid for it, and the company might not deliver/short deliver. Creator's first project too.Lol.

    • even better consider a box fan + a hvac filter + sticky tape

Look at their blog for how to create a DIY purifier. Very affordable and effective.

Can you please share where you bought a cheap hvac filter in Australia?

This link has some great data and ideas for home made purifiers with comparisons against branded units and tips on the filters to use. https://web.archive.org/web/20170227094700/http://smartairfi…

    • Does Kickstarter charge GST on low value imports?

      • They have to comply with whatever the Australian tax law requires. I don't think there's a GST-free level anymore.

        • I've heard it's unenforceable and that some online retailers have not complied yet.

  • Anyone had any experience with newer xiaomi airdog x3 air purifier with washable filters? I’m considering that over the pro

    • Washable filters don't work well. If it's not pure HEPA, don't bother.

      • Thanks suggest you look into airdog x5, xiaomi model is similar. The x5 seems really high tech and reviews are good often comparing it with molekule. Pls let me know your thoughts as you might share a diff perspective to me after above, Cheers

        • Thanks. As an asthma and allergy sufferer I've spent a lot of time researching these things and taking a very scientific approach.

I've found that a lot of reviews (including those of the Airdog) are written from an anecdotal standpoint and don't independently measure the effectiveness. If all the reviewer does is trust the built-in particle counter and doesn't use a known accurate one (e.g. a Dylos) to double-check the readings, they're putting blind trust in the manufacturer. And I have not come across any independent study that shows that there is any kind of household filter better than a pure HEPA. There's a reason why HEPA filters are used in sensitive environments like hospitals. If there was something better, the professionals would be using it.

So unless it can be independently proven otherwise, I'm trusting the proven combination of a pure HEPA filter and a fan. Anything else is just "high tech" marketing BS.

I own a Xiaomi 2S and it's pretty good as long as you set a manual fan speed and don't trust the built-in particle counter to manage the Auto mode. I'm getting a whole-house purifier installed very shortly, which ought to be significantly better.

          • @kranix: Thanks. I’ve settled for xiaomi x3 in living room and 2S in bedroom, suggest you also look into silver sheets/pillowcase (grounded ones) as it helps

These devices apparently work only slightly worse than a wet cloth over a fan.

  • Hey Gearbite, any chance of the Xiaomi Air Purifier 2? :D

    • Yep. That's what I came for too.

  • anyone have this and the 2s?
    comparison?

    • I have 3 of the Mi Purifier 2 (non-oled screen) and prefer them over the Pro.
I find the 2 more sensitive and ramps up more in auto mode - the Pro seems lazy in Auto mode.

      • Auto mode is known to not work well. On my 2s I just set a manual speed.
