    Someone mentioned in the discussion for that deal that SmartWare now resides on a normal partition, but the closest I could find to confirmation was this WD page which suggests although SmartWare is no longer in the firmware, the VCD remains:

      Not sure what you mean by VCD but my 2TB USB3.0 MyBook Essential (not Elements) had only a normal partition table with one NTFS partition and the software was just in the partition as normal files and could be used, ignored or deleted.
