Any Cheap or Free Ways How to Sync and Back up Google Photos ?

Hi,

I have a large library in Google Photos and trying to find ways how to back it up and sync with other cloud service. I know that Google Photos itself is backing up but in unfortunate event of crash I would like to have back up as I have family photos there and don't want to loose it.
So far I came across Picbackman. I think this might be the solution but was wondering if there are any other apps or softwares cheaper or even for free.
Thanks for any suggestions:)

  • Back it up to an external hard drive and then transfer somewhere else?

EDIT: Picbackman looks good, I don't think you'll find another solution as fully featured as that cheaper.

You're concerned that Google might crash and lose your data?

      Yes

  • Use Google Drive on your PC (or multiple) and ensure your Photos folder is selected to download.

I've got this setup on two computers in separate locations; that way I'm safe against either of them crashing. And they'll instantly get fresh photos from my phone as they sync, so I don't need to keep up with backups.

Excuse my newbie question but is there a step by step guide how to do it somewhere online?

I am in my google drive account but confused how to actually do it.

      • Not a problem!

First - enable your Google Photos folder to appear in Drive:
Basically Settings -> Create a Google Photos folder checkbox.

Here's the download link for the app; install on the PC that you're using for backups:

Go through the install process, select a different HDD if you want it somewhere else/on a bigger drive. Then select your folders to sync - you'll now see that the Google Photos folder is listed, which will ensure that your photos will start to download. It'll take quite a while to sync, and lots of data.

If you go back into Google Drive Sync's preferences later, you may notice that the folder size is 0mb - this is normal if you've selected High Quality in Google Photos, it's showing the quota of your Drive being used, and NOT the actual storage space for your backups (which will probably be rather huge).

        • Thanks a lot! I appreciate your help.
I will try to set it up. It would solve my problem:)

        • I managed to set it up and looks like it works (still syncyng all photos as I write). Thanks gain for your help.

You are probably aware that from July 10, Google Drive and Google Photos will be not syncing.

Will this still work or we have to do additional steps to have our photos synced and backed up on Google Drive even after this change?

          • @Kennard: I just got this notification last night.

From reading through, that means this method of backup Will NO LONGER WORK. I'm rather ticked off about that! I'll be definitely looking for alternative offline syncing options - I'd like to say Google Photos will have their own backup app or something soon, but I doubt it.

Soon as I find something viable, I'll let you know!

Will you be using these photos on a frequent basis? If not, get a external HD.

All these back up servers only give you a certain amount of space and will run out. You will then have to start paying. Get a hard drive and when the server gets full, transfer the photos to the HD.

    • Yes I backed up my photos on the HD. Now I am just looking for additional protection.

  • Hijack thread.

How to restart google photos backup from clean slate ?
I did the wrong way of deleting unwanted photos from phone gallery instead of google photos app.
I'd like to empty google photos backup and resync what's on my phone gallery.
How do i do that ?

  • A cheap way of doing it is install google drive to a pc then point two services at it. Say have Onedrive and Google using the same folder.

Needs your pc to be on to do the syncing but should work pretty well. Only downside is if you have shitty internet speed.

    • Thanks for your post.
How to point 2 services at Google drive?

  • I have triple backup of my photos. Google photos is free and I have one drive subscription. Setup on all phones in my house. Every photo is backed up to google and one drive and then downloaded on my home pc because of onedrive. Moreover I have raid setup on my pc. Once setup, it's all automatic.

    • So you have Google photos and One Drive linked or synced together?

      • No. You are confusing 2 things.

Just take a discounted office 365 subscription, pref with a friend or family and split the office 365 cost. ( I share with a friend and costs around $40 per year).

Then install one drive app on all phones and setup photo upload to same account.

Then, install one drive app on pc. All your data and photos will be synced to pc.

Then install Google photos app on all your phones and setup normal size photo upload (Free for unlimited storage). That way you won't have to purchase google drive subscription but still your photos will be backed up from all the phones plus you will have a copy of your photos (and other files on onedrive) on your pc

Even better if you setup raid 1 on your pc. So you have a backup of all your photos and files even if a disk fails.
