  • googling … Nice weight and battery life, but the low-res TN display lets it down.

    • For a sub $500 laptop, the display is actually a highlight! TN is a bit average, but 14" 900p? Yes please!

      • You do realise this is a used model?
FWIW, I feel the weight and battery specs, if my google results are accurate, is more important than screen res.

I was thinking under $400.00 and I'd buy one(considering refurb/2nd hand) I don't need one… But I wouldn't mind a windows machine to play around with. I've been in the Mac OS for over a decade at home. But Windows at work.

          • @ozf1: Windows has done some great stuff with touchscreens.
Apple has maintained the separation between laptop OS, and tablet OS. Both approaches have merit.
I'd suggest getting a 2-in-1, like the Surface Pro 3, or equivalent, if you want to "play around" with windows.

  • Google Chrome, VLC, OpenOffice Suite - is the freeware worth mentioning?

    • For unaware non tech savvy users, it can add $100 extra on the price

So cynical. Good on them for making an extra effort.
Little cost to them, compared to the time saved for customers.

        • I wasn't saying these guys are trying to mane an extra buck for advertising free software….
Although, I agree it probably doesn't need to be mentioned.

No AC wifi really? How old is this machine?

    • +1

      It's 5 yrs old, wow!

      • Hi there,

The model did come out 5 years old but the 512GB SSD has been added in recently and the quality of the machine that we sell are A grade or above. We do testing of all our products and provide 1 Year Warranty and 1 Year Battery Warranty if any issue pop up :)

      Hi there,

The HP 840 G1 actually does have Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac. We have fixed the typo in the description and our listing. Any questions please feel free to contact us.

      • Any further discounts if buying 2?

        • Hi there,

If you are purchasing two then you would get $200 off. We can't provide any more discount sadly :(

  • Can anyone Suggest if it worth buying this Laptop and how good is the Touch sensitivity?

  • Awesome price thanks rep.

  • Last year deal was better

  • What condition is the X1 in?

    • Hi there,

Our X1 Carbon are all A grade tested and minimal cosmetic marks. They all come with 1 Year Warranty.

  • Really unhappy with recompute, bought one of these notebooks for my son only to find what was quite possibly the worst shipping ever.
The unit arrived with two large cracks in the top of the screen cover and the company rep's response was that this was safe shipping….
The notebook was sent 1500 Kilometres through Auspost. Placed into a cardboard box with no chicklet packing (no foam or cardboard travel protection at all) with ~100mm side clearance, 67 and 40mm clearances in the other two directions.
There's a link to some pictures here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1siJrJLes_coSx6OB_e1L…

I buy and sell computer parts through OCAU's forums regularly and will be sharing this information there and probably let the folks on Whingepool know too.

    Buyers beware.

Edit: Currently awaiting the company response to my complaint, after the initial pictures sent were "not good enough"…

    • Concerning… I have an order arriving tomorrow.

    • This will make me think twice before ordering from recompute.

    • Hi there,

We have read your post and we are sorry for you that you have encountered this issue. We have sent thousands of laptops with our packaging and rarely have any real issue with them. Clearly something has gone wrong during freight. The laptop goes into our plastic cardboard sleeve and the plastic cover wraps around the laptop creating a tight seal around it causing it not to move around at all. There is spacing on all side to protect the laptop since it already been sealed wrap with the plastic. The likely cause is probably due to the busy period of the EOFY and was likely damaged during freight. We are always happy to exchange the laptop or do a refund of your choice and provide free shipping label for you to ship it back to us. Please contact us at your earliest convenience and we shall sort everything out asap for you. We shall contact our couriers and notify them of this problem.

      • So the issue is that "your packaging is good" but "the package was likely damaged during freight"?
        Hmm…
        Still awaiting my refund…
