Let me start with the obvious. How does this compare to Thermomix?

    • +1

      like half the price

    • Kitchenaid typically have a pattern of being great, but not great value for money at RRP. Particularly for their food processors.
Not sure how this compares with thermomix though, I'd be interested in a firsthand account

    • +1

First off u wont find thermomix at this sale price.

Cant fry on thermomix b4. Although the latest TM6 now claims can reach 160C so thats new. Still price wise doesnt go on sale and is over 2k.unless u find them on ebay.

Wifes thermomix has been on display for a year or so mixing dust..

Thermo 2.2l i think.. This is over 4l?

Thermo has weighing scale. Dont think this one does.

Still im not sold with any of these… As i said ours hasnt been used a while.

Tread carefully with comparing any of the other machines on the market to the Thermomix unless you really want the guided cooking built into the machine or want to mill your own flour. I have either owned or currently own most of the thermal machines on the market….I currently have the TM31, the Tefal Cuisine Companion, the Magimix Cook Expert, the Kenwood Cooking Chef, the Kenwood kCook Multi Smart and now the Kitchenaid Cook Processor (although I wish I bought it this week not last week :( ). Until about 6 weeks ago, I also had the TM5, but my mother has stolen it and I am not missing it at all.
The CC, KMS and the KACP all are on sale for incredible prices at the moment. The CC at Amazon, the KMS at TVSN and the above deal. They are all better all round machines than the Thermomix. The "new" features of sugar stages and cooking to a higher temperature with the TM6 are restricted to recipes from the Cookidoo platform….you CANNOT use them unless you are cooking a recipe from Cookidoo, which locks you into an ongoing yearly subscription unless you want the functioning of the device restricted. The CC only cooks to 130C, but the KMS cooks to 180C and the KACP to 140C. All three machines have specialised stirring blades that enable meat/vegetables etc to stay whole. The TM's turn meat into baby food even when the blades are set in reverse….the new TM6 has an intermittent mode that is supposed to reduce this, but the CE has similar blades and three different intermittent speeds and still has a tendency to produce baby food.
I have had my TM31 for 11 years and find it a good machine….the TM5 similarly was a good machine….but not value for money compared to the others now available.

      • Thanks for the helpful insight.
Would you recommend the KACP or others?

        • +5

I can't pass an opinion on the KACP as yet as I only received it the middle of last week and was away for the weekend so haven't actually turned it on yet. My initial opinion is very positive. It appears to be a well built machine and the attachments look to be good quality. I like the fact it comes with the mini bowl.
I have had my CC for 5 years and use it on a daily basis, it is my workhorse. The drawbacks with it are that you have to purchase the food processor attachment separately as well as the external steamer. There is a mini bowl for it, but Tefal do not sell it in Australia. The KMS is like the Swiss Army Knife of the thermal machine world. There really is nothing else you need to buy for it. I have only had it a couple of months, but have been very impressed with the machine itself….the app however, I find very clunky. I like the fact that you can drive the machine from an ipad/tablet/phone but it annoys me that you can only do it from within a recipe within the app. I would like the ability to program it myself from the app (you can operate it manually and like the CC it has built in programs). I LOVE the processing tower and the ability to process either straight into the cooking bowl or rotate it to process into a separate container. It has its own motor so you can be cooking and process at the same time.
I cannot honestly recommend the TM UNLESS you are a beginner cook or like the idea of guided cooking. I basically never used the guided cooking as it annoyed me the way that a lot of the recipes were written….my mother however is loving it. My TM31 lives in the caravan and is only pulled out when I am away….I still love it, but over 11 years I have learnt to live with the drawbacks…when I bought it, there were no other machines on the market.
The reason I have soooooo many machines is that I work fulltime, love cooking and don't have very much spare time. When I cook, I usually have at least two, sometimes even three machines going at the same time. I only do it as a hobby, but love seeing what technology can do in the kitchen.
I have a group on facebook - Thermal Cooking Chaos https://www.facebook.com/groups/2304830952872886/?ref=group_… which I started to give a place to discuss all the different machines and allow people to ask for balanced opinions (there are few too many thermomix groupies out there for my liking)

          • @staceleebrown: was looking at possibly getting the KACP but after reading your comment about other viable options and have started looking into the KMS. Do you think that would be a better buy overall based on all the ones you've used including the CC for 5 years?

            • +3

@lemoo: At the prices the three machines that are on sale are, they are all very good buys. Which one is the best really depends on your style of cooking. I would recommend watching as many youtube videos as you can to get a good idea of what they are capable of. I can’t really comment on the KACP as I have literally just plugged mine in and am planning on making some muffins and biscuits with it once I read the instruction book again :). My CC has just finished making a chicken broth, and my KMS is currently making beef stroganoff for dinner. I could have done either in either machine, but chose to do it that way around as the KMS could brown the meat, onions and garlic at a higher temperature and I could slice the onions/mushrooms while cooking. I could have done it in the CC but the KMS did it a little better.

              • @staceleebrown: fair call, thanks for the info! one last question if thats ok: how much of a pain/ease are they to clean? assuming the KMS has the extra bit compared to the others

                • +3

@lemoo: The CC is very easy to clean although the lid is a bit tricky to pull apart to start with. The KMS has a very good rinse program that you can use to do the initial clean. The CE is a pain in the butt….being perfectly honest. You need to use the “knob” in the lid to undo the blades. The lid drips everywhere when you remove it and the bowl seems to catch food a little more. Food also gets caught under the blades and can be hard to clean out (this is true for the TM as well). The CC, KMS and KACP all have attachments that drop onto a central spoke. The TM groupies called this a disadvantage when the CC came out, but I actually find it an advantage as you can quickly change to the most appropriate attachment and they are easier to clean.
Whichever machine you look at, I can recommend getting the TM style cleaning brush. They look like a small toilet brush and do an amazing job of doing an initial clean on all of the machines.

                  • @staceleebrown: Wow, thanks for the detailed info. In terms of cleaning, can the bowls and attachments for all machines be washed in a dishwasher? This is an important part of time poor cooks.

                    • +3

                      @Nitrous: I’ll do one machine at a time -
Thermomix TM31/TM5 - all parts can go in the dishwasher
Cuisine Companion - all parts can go in the dishwasher EXCEPT the central spindle (but this takes two seconds to handwash)
Kenwood kCook Multi Smart - all parts can go in the dishwasher
Magimix Cook Expert - all parts can go in the dishwasher
Kitchenaid Cook Processor - all parts can go in the dishwasher, but recommend hand washing

I alternate between dishwashing and hand washing mine. I tend to put the attachments (blades, whisks etc) in the dishwasher but wash bowls and lids. The bowls take up a lot of room in the dishwasher and the shape of the lids means they collect water (in the case of the Magimix, it also collects water in the handle of the bowl and in the base and then “wees” all over your bench if you forget to let it drain when getting it out of the dishwasher or sink). The CC and the KACP (as far as I can see) don’t have built in rinse functions, but with the CC you can use the turbo button to do an initial clean….I am presuming that the pulse may do a similar thing with the KACP. The CE has a built in rinse program and so does the KMS (the KMS is much better with this than the CE). If my dishwasher is not too full, I will put the bowls through, but on nights like tonight where I have made a chicken soup, beef stroganoff and am about to make maple syrup ice cream and cookies….its easier to do the rinses and then quickly wash up.

          • @staceleebrown: Awesome thanks for all the info. I haven't come across anyone else who's tried so many different machines and willing to share comparison info!

            No Hotmix though?

            • @yanman: Yes to Hotmix, and the Robot Coupe Robot Cook. I have used both of these machines…..this is where I should put a disclaimer that I actually work for a commercial catering equipment company and have for nearly 20 years which is where my love of kitchen technology comes from….I still can't convince my husband however to let me have a combi steam oven.
The hotmix desperately needs an upgrade both cosmetically and functionally. It is still the same machine that they were selling a few years ago and is overpriced for what you get. It does however have the nice feature of cook to temperature. The Robot Coupe Robot Cook is probably going to be one of those machines that will still be working in commercial kitchens in 20 years time, all of the Robot Coupe products are nearly indestructible and we have had customers who have given it a really good try. I had one in my kitchen for a while but didn't get along with it so it returned to work and was sold as a demo unit. I wouldn't recommend either for home use….the Hotmix because it is ugly and overpriced, the Robot Cook because I think it is better in the hands of a trained cook/chef.

    Is there much difference?

    • The difference is mainly in the colors. KCF0104 Platinum comes with metallic colors. The only difference in KCF0104 and KCF0103 was the upgraded lid but the KCF0103 models have since been upgraded with the new lid.

  • Looks like new one is coming out soon, which is why the old discounted https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLlosrXD_mU

Adding the missing scales, and Wifi App functions

    • +1

Based on my experience of the TM (and the model of Thermochef I had which had a quasi built in scale), the built in scale is a trifle over-rated. I still prefer to use a stand alone scale….maybe I’m a klutz, but I always have problems getting ingredients into the various bowls without at least a little spillage. Cleaning flour, cocoa etc out of the crevices of a very expensive appliance is not fun…..particularly the dumb arms of the TM5.
Unless the app allows you to independently drive the machine, I also don’t see this as an advantage. The TM6 has guided cooking but you effectively now have to pay a yearly subscription to use your machine. The KMS has app driven recipes which control the machine BUT you can’t add your own recipes and the app is very very clunky and hard to find recipes in.

  • How does this compare to ThermoChef?

    • My personal opinion is that it is an improvement on the Thermochef. The Thermochef is one of the machines that I have left by the wayside. I bought it on release in Australia and ended going through three different bases. The first one died within a matter of weeks, the second one lasted a few more months but then sounded like the motor was trying to unwind itself every time it stopped. They sent me a third base and told me to dump the second one in the bin (the first was shipped back to them). I ended up with three jugs. When the Tefal Cuisine Companion was released about 4 1/2 years ago, I bought it and passed the Thermochef to my sister. It has had very little use, but of the 3 jugs only one is still working.

      • Thanks for sharing your experience. What is your opinion of the Magimix Expert?

        • It is the machine that I probably like the least. I had a bad start with it, my base was faulty and decided to act like it was possessed and do it’s own thing. Magimix were very good and replaced it. Since then I have been trying to make an effort to use it more regularly. I have had it for 2 1/2 years but find I still have to make an effort to use it. I don’t find it as intuitive as the CC or the KMS to use.
I am not keen on the “4 blade” system that is very similar to the TM, but the blades are not as sharp and combined with the shape of the bowl, doesn’t mill as well or blend as well as the TM. I also struggle with the speed and temperature restrictions….at high temps you can only cook at higher speeds for 10 minutes. I don’t quite understand how this is a safety restriction and find it annoying when trying to reduce something like Dulce De Leche where to cook at a higher temp to reduce, you really do need the higher speeds to prevent burning.
I also find it a little annoying that you have to pay extra for the dough blade and extra for the steamer. These are areas where the KMS is better value. I do like the fact that unlike the TM, they have done a FREE software upgrade that improves the functionality of the machine. There is a growing social media support for the machine although people seem to still be fixated on “converting” thermomix recipes instead of normal recipes. Magimix have started to release more cookbooks for the CE.

          • @staceleebrown: It's strange that the Magimix Expert has an almost 100% positive rating on the product review site. I own a few Magimix items and they do make good machines but you will generally find at least a few negative reviews for all other thermal cookers on that review site except for the Magimix. I'm not sure what to make if it.

            • @Jimmoze: There's also the Kenwood Cooking Chef that looks like their stand mixer. So many choices…

            • @Jimmoze: This is another take it with a grain of salt one….they ran a promotion where if you posted a review, they would give you a free cookbook. I found that a little in bad taste….to spend over $2000 on a machine and then be bribed to post a review????
I have the Kenwood Cooking Chef (the original model) and found that it was a good machine, but all the attachments became irritating with all the washing up I needed to do. It is now living in the cupboard for the occasional times I want to use it.

  • Hi people, as an previous owner of this machine I want warn you. It is an excellent machine but if you are sensitive to noises don't buy it. A strange supersonic noise comes out of it when it is working. You can find it in many reviews. At the end I sold it with a loss.

    • I don’t know if this is something that they may have improved. I used mine for the first time this morning to make some snickerdoodle cookie dough and didn’t notice any major noise problem. It was significantly quieter than either of my Thermomixers. I have ADHD and have issues with noise so I probably would have a problem with it if I heard a supersonic noise.

      • Just saw your reply, may be they solved the problem. I first sent it to them under warranty as I thought it was a problem. They accepted the noise issue but they said that all machines are like that and returned it back to me. Here is a review from productreview.com.au
"the machine has a great and responsive temp control. the stirring attachment is non stick and easy to just rinse clean. id be really happy with this machine but, it makes a horrible squealing noise whenever you put the processor or stirring on. its highpitched and unbearable. iuse it in my back room instead of the kitchen so i dont have to deal with the noise, but its annoying not being able to have it going in the kitchen"

        another one

"In short, this device has replaced traditional cooking for me. All I need to do is quarter or rough-chop larger ingredients, combine in the bowl, and hit a couple buttons. 30-75 minutes later I have 4-5 servings of delicious curry, stew, chili, tagine, coq au vin, even desserts like bread pudding. Yes, I've made all these and others, with uniform success.
Why didn't I give it five stars? This device is LOUD. While the stirring and simmering is fairly quiet, my complaint lies with the piercing, high pitched whine this device emits. It's nearly supersonic and headache-inducingly loud. The only thing I can compare it to is the 'coil whine' you hear when a computer power supply is going bad."

        • It may just be that after so many years of using the TM's which are ridiculously noisy machines, most of the others seem almost whisper quiet. :) There are times when using the TM, I've wanted to put on ear protection!

          • @staceleebrown: I see, after KitchenAid I bought Magimix and there is no noise issue.
